Dont think they will publish but.....

It is quite true that in general Melburnians don’t give a stuff about Rugby League. They certainly don’t despise it, it is just basically irrelevant. It is amusing to see how worked up people such as ‘Sad Sad Reality’ seem to get.... All though I do concede he does have some good and relevant points ie ‘I hear your barista calling’. Now, I would just like to fill this poor bloke on a couple of issues, as he seems to consider himself a true ‘man’s man’ (much in the mould of the red necks from the movie ‘deliverance’ it would appear). If you love watching punch ups in the footy watch some of the lower grade leagues in Australian football. I guarantee the punch ups are a violent in anything you see in your beloved sport. The reason why punch ups are rare in AFL these days is because you will get suspended for many weeks. Also... I would like to get your opinion on the fact that RL is the only code where out and proud homosexual men play, and a tactic involves digitally *******ing opponents. Also do you thing that it is a coincidence that the Sydney is the home of Rugby League and the home of the worlds largest homosexual celebration??

Just because Rugby League supporters are homophobic doesn't mean we need to be. I personally don't care if any Swans players are gay or not as it doesn't affect how well they play on the football field.

Let's get serious here, 90% of the people bagging the other codes skills would struggle to do the most basic of them. League chubbies like LebaneseForces wouldn't be able to handpass to save himself and is wager that none of the right handers on here would be able to throw a basic spiral pass to their right hand side.

I'm sure this isn't just St Kilda's game plan but the game plan for all AFL teams, clubs and supporters LOL.

The war is long over.....Australian Rules Football is the National Football Code.

League had a brief window of opportunity in the 1990's with a National push, but even with News Corporations' multi-millions behind them they still failed miserably. :o

Attendances just say it all really. :thumbsu:

Left the TV on last night and the NRL Footy show was on, had to laugh when a player from Norths? said how excited they were that they were nearing 20,000 members, christ even our start up teams will nearly get that many, really a sad game, I personally prefer real Rugby ie Rugby Union if i was to watch it. Aussie Rules is just a vastly better game.

lol of course both side will be biased towards there own sports, these articles and are good entertainment value if nothing else not to mention a massive blog hit count which makes $$ for the author its no wonder these articles are becoming more common.

Hilarious comment about league being an international code yes internationally renown as the game of losers and thugs. Small followings in the UK tiny outposts of amateurs in other countries and a complete inability to expand outside of it's home territory apart from one team the Storm. NRL is a complete misnomer it is the North East Rugby League no one else gives a sh#t.

The only sensible comment in the article was that the next team should be in Tasmania.

I don't bother getting into cross-code arguments. Never argue with an idiot, and when rugby league (or soccer fans in many cases) can only come up with "it's like a flock of seagulls fighting over a chip" it's time to walk away.

Because hardcore Union supporters despise League. It's kind of an "enemy of my enemy" situation. They would turn on AFL the moment League takes its last blow to the head.

there is a class divide between rugby union and rugby league in sydney and brisbane.

the former is a private school game and so predominantly participated and supported by the more educated and affluent of Sydney society. was only 20 years ago when the game was amateur even at the highest levels and wallabies were commonly doctors, lawyers and other professionals.

the latter has working-class roots which are embraced and referred to as a badge of honour. similar to feeling generally hard done by or frequently criticised for being of a lower socio-economic status, they take criticism of their game in a similar vein.

the equivalent of rugby league followers in melbourne would be COL & RIC supporters.

Yep. International code which plays against two other real countries, various atolls and countries made of shells.

Makes the Coalition of the Willing look like the UN.

The comments between AFL and NRL supporters are hilarious, mainly so the bias of the NRL supporters.:thumbsu:

News Ltd runs The Punch website, News also owns Alpha magazine, for which the author of this piece, Anthony Sharwood, writes. Alpha also has a slight anti-AFL bias, stands to reason then.

A blogger on that article named Sad, Sad Reality, that name is the same as a blogger on the SMH's love/dating site who has both a sexual dysfunction and an unhealthy angst towards women.

Hilarious...

Only managed to read the first 2 or 3 before I couldnt be bothered reading anymore. LOL sad, sad limited rants saying the same shit ad nauseum

it takes 10 members of the lower classes to support a member of the higher class therefore there is simply always going to be more members of the lower classes then the higher classes.

hence why RL is always going to be more popular then RU.

unless your football club is private, or has some restriction on who is likely to support it (ie private schooling and RU), you will have a similar percentage of 'Lower's' as the other clubs, and any thoughts that your club supporters are madeup of somewhat less Lower class people then the other clubs are just self-delision.

All the crims live in Essendon.

I didn't find the article amusing. Close minded rugby league supporters are not amusing -they deserve pity like a person who has received a serious physical or mental injury.
Why is it only league supporters who carry on like this - not rugby union?

It is a bit sad for them really what they are missing out on.

que sera sera.
Yeah i agree

Close minded AFL fans are just as shit, however.

well this shows a minor misunderstanding of what actually occured in rugby league in the mid-late 90's. ARL expanded, then Super League came about, game tore in half, ruining all new expansion (and seeing the loss/merger of long established clubs). Not quite as simplistic as you seem to have implied.

But how long has membership been pushed in AFL when compared with rugby league? When did the push for members in AFL start in earnest, late 80's early 90's? Have a look at, for example, Richmond numbers from those early days. It takes a long term culture shift for memberships to catch on, and the increase across the last three years has been pretty good. Obviously dwarfed by AFL but hey, different cultures.

As for league vs Union, League has been much better at moving beyond the traditional working class background than Union has in moving beyond it's background. Union is completely hamstrung by it's old boys network, to the point where they lose huge numbers of juniors around high school age because they insist on picking players from the private schoolboy comps, rather than the junior competition, meaning promising players who cant afford what is a costly education simply turn to league. Unions loss.

The war is all in the heads of NRL fans. I mean they can't mention tv rights without mentioning AFL. They'd rather get 500m if the AFL got 450 than get 1.5bil if the AFL got 2bil.

I've seen league threads on "what are you doing to destroy GWS" !! Guys are taking GWS pamphlets and throwing them all out. They are ringing AFL club sponsors and telling them they wont do business with them if they sponsor AFL. Ringing tv stations that show AFL ads and saying they wont watch. WTF.

Did anyone do this when the Storm started ? No, we went for a look and supported our Melbourne team.

If their game is so great and doing so well why are they so scared ?

My brother in law is a lifelong Broncos fan but hardly went to games and was never a member. Me and my brother told him about how important it is to back your club financially and talked him into getting a membership. Now he goes every week with 5 or 6 mates that are all members, thanks to AFL fans.

Anyone who is saying League is going to die is an idiot. Theyre having the most succesful year and the other day i read in the MELBOURNE herald sun that League is over taking AFL with pay-tv ratings, and some of the free to air TV. It's not going to die and alot of AFL supporters are also close minded. It's actually really irritating liking both sports and having to put up with stubborn one-siders.

Who cares, let them enjoy their sport and let us just enjoy our great game. Neither AFL or NRL will ever die out so don't get your hopes up for it, the fact that AFL is more supported around Aust. than NRL doesn't mean we have to wish that their sport dies and we gain total domination, doesn't matter just enjoy the spectacles of both.
