AFLW General AFLW Talk Thread

I went to every game at Princes Park and the opening game crowd was much smaller than the same game in 2017. That game skewed it and I know most people would have been there for the new stadium but I mean it still an AFLW crowd.
No I dont know what you mean. Play the game at Freo oval and you would have got 5k. People went to check out the oval, check out their seats way ahead of going to watch an AFLW game. If it had been WA U/18's vs the best combo Vic U/18's they would have got 40k.

PORT ADELAIDE has given its strongest indication yet that it intends to join the NAB AFL Women’s competition in the near future.

In a statement responding to a plan from the SANFL to introduce a new women's winter competition in 2019, Power CEO Keith Thomas said the club was looking forward to having its own AFLW side.

Don't really mind about the date as hopefully there will be a bigger pool of genuine talent to select from as opposed to the present.

Brilliant there is an upsurge in players and teams which should bode well for the future, provided of course steeple chase like hurdles aren't placed before Port Adelaide.

There are some seriously talented indigenous females playing in this part of the world.

Why is it that we have to wait so long to enter a team into the AFLW?
Because we said we wanted to go to China and we didn't apply for a provisional licence when they were asking clubs to make a bid for 2019 and 2020 expansion in mid 2017.

Remember the AFL at the end of 2015 when we made Erin Phillips our Captain, said that the comp would start in 2020, but Gill needing a legacy drove to start in February 2017 and we had changed tact after getting the deal from Mr Gui negotiated in February and March 2016 and announced in April 2016.

We didnt name erin to be our captain for a comp that was starting in 5 years time...we half heartedly put a bid in and it was quite embarassing (like the massive alberton upgrade on the eve of an election) when it all turned to s**t and erin went to the crows...

Yeah but it's easier to blame McLachlan for everything

For better or worse out focus was primarily on China and our indigenous academy. We made a few moves, but given SA was always only going to start with one AFLW club we would've had to have made a damn compelling case (which required the associated financial and managerial focus and commitment). I think it will play out well for us, the womens league is growing and working through the teething issues (including the very tricky and awkward calls on things like transgender players) and we'll join in a few years when it fully mirrors the AFL. I don't think we'll suffer much for not having being among the first entrants, we might be a bit behind organisation wise, but in terms of supporters and sponsorship those battle lines are already drawn and divvied up according to the AFL mens (ie. there won't be any people/companies who support the Crows in the AFLW but Port in the AFL and vice versa).

We did it as a marketing exercise because the AFL had the AFLW as a thought bubble. In December 2015 the AFL had talked about 2020 being the likely start date maybe a year earlier. It wasn't until mid 2016 that the AFL got their s**t together and rushed a March 2017 start.

Gill needed to get the Essendon drugs saga stench out of the news. Remember, the CAS 2 year ban ruling was on the 11th - no early 12th in Oz - January 2016. AFLW was accelerated to distract from that and ragging mad Essendon fans. In between December 2015 and mid 2016 we found Mr Gui.

Greg Phillips has decided to get in the female coaching caper. Has been appointed SMOSH's female team coach in the Adelaide Footy league. Erin played for SMOSH as a junior.

......Phillips’s daughter, Crows AFLW premiership star and ex-WNBA basketballer Erin Phillips, played football at SMOSH as a junior.......Cook said SMOSH hoped to enter a division one team, which Phillips would coach, and a division one reserves side. “We first approached Greg because we felt Erin (his daughter) had provided us with good support with our junior girls programs and encouraged us to move into a senior women’s team,” Cook said. “We thought it was fitting to approach Greg first and offer him a coaching position to start us off, knowing he had the credentials. SMOSH fields under-10, under-12, under-14 and under-16 teams in the SANFL’s junior girls’ competition.......

Kardinia Park lol.

When’s the next $100,000,000 worth of taxpayers’ money getting pumped into the joint?

“We need gold toilets flushed with Penfolds Grange” - Brian Cook, probably.
