Best Individual Performances To Win A Match

Many people remember the game when Kernahan kicked out on the full against Essendon after the siren in 93 for a draw but I remember it as a great individual performance to salvage 2 points for us although Diesel deserves an honourable mention also.

Was also there in 87 when Sticks kicked the winner after the siren against North in rd.22 at VFL Park to secure us top spot and the coveted double chance and weeks rest which would prove invaluable a few weeks later in our premiership win over the Hawks.

IIRC there was a game where Dorotich was moved on to Lockett after he had kicked something like 6 til half time and kept him kickless after that.

You are exactly right. Round 6, 1992. Lockett's 6 goal first half gave the Saints a 4 goal lead (I think Sexton played on him in the first half) at half time. With Lockett totally shut out of the game, Carlton had a 10 goal to 5 goal second half, to win the game by 8 points. Dorotich got 2 Brownlow votes for his effort.

One performance very rarely mentioned is that of Wayne Harmes' 4 goal third quarter in the '82 Qualifying Final v Hawthorn. Harmes' effort turned a close match (5 point margin at half time) into a foregone conclusion (54 point margin at three quarter time).

ROFL. I would troll but don't wanna risk a card.

In soccer despite it being accidental, that would have got him a straight red card and a nice few weeks holiday at the start of the season. Send off rule/sin bn would be stupid.

My god what an idiotic post. Did you even see the incident? I was at the game and had a good view from the ponsford end. Both Harley and Williams collided with each other and both tried but failed to avoid a head clash. But keep sooking if it makes you feel better, the mean old hawkers deliberately took out your inspiritational captain

It has been mentioned a couple of times already and they are right. Kouta in the 99 Prelim against the filfth. He did everything bar drive the team bus that day. And in the last quarter he had a superman cape on.

In 99 he was unstoppable. Leigh Mathews said that Kouta was the most destructive player he has ever seen. Pagan, after North were violated by the Kouta in '99 said that they need a bazooka to stop him. Simply unstoppable until he was cruelled by the 2 severe knee injuries.

Yep, that game in 2000 against North at Optus Oval, where Kouta got about 40 touches, 5 goals from the midfield, and at one point had Carey tagging him.

For mine, the pinnacle of his career was this game, even better than the second half of the 99 prelim.

Seems sarcasm is lost on some people....

Can ayone think of any brilliant stopping jobs that someone has done? They are not neccessarily match winning, but can often change the course of a game. It may be a tagging job or a defender stopping a gun forward. Obviously been a WCE fan and it been very recent i remember Glass's efforts on Hall in the 06 Grand Final (he was innaccurate though).

I was hoping to hear of some other efforts from defenders that usually go unrecognised. Even more interesting would be a coaches decision to move a player or employ a tactic that changes the course of a game and ultimately won them the match.

My favourite
2004 GF - 21yo Kane Cornes on 25yo 150-gamer Simon Black
Cornes 12 kicks, 7 handballs, 3 marks, 0.1
Black 6 kicks, 9 handballs, 0 marks, 0.0

And as for best individual performance - Sticks Kernahan SOO v Victoria - 10 goals out of 16 (in a losing team)

For me would have to be Peter matera in 92 grand final. And old sandys call "and matera sets sail for home" agghh remember it like it was yesterday..

I remember Peter Sumich killing Essendon one day at the MCG.

The best individual game of his career, was amazing that day kicked 13.12
or some thing like that.

Ended up with 25 possesions from full foward.

Had a chance to of kicked 20, if he could kick straight.

Reiwoldt in last years prelim. Took the brunt of a BIG lake bump, but courageously dragged himself back up to kick the goal...;)
Seriously though, Andrew Macleod tore us apart in the 98 prelim, 7 goals from a midfiled/flanker was amazing.
Agree with the kouta sentiments, prior to the knees he was unstoppable.
Peter Matera was the difference in the '92 grand final imo.

Barry Stoneham played the best single individual game I've seen in following Geelong since 1963. He played ruck, chf, chb,fb, kicked goals, roved his own hitouts and totally do minated against Bulldogs in a 92 final.
Have seen GAblett sr. play so many dominant games, we take it for granted, but his highlight package would be 2nd to none in the history of AFL footy.
If Stoneham had not got injured, I'm sure he would have rivalled Carey as the greatest ever CHF.

Tredders vs richmond last year would be the best I've seen with my own eyes (on tv :( )

The goal umpire in last years GF did well too :p

I wish to raise two points

1) We should be looking at a performance over a whole game - not just a quarter or a half
2) People have short memories on this forum.

I can think of three standout performances

1) Leigh Matthews, Hawthorn VS Essendon at Waverley Park in 1973.

He had about 42 posssessions and kicked 11.3. What people dont realise is that he shared the roving with Peter Crimmins so would have spent at least half the game on the ball.

2) Greg Williams; Sydney vs StKilda at the SCG in the late 80's. A lazy 53 possessions and five goals from one of the best users of the ball.

3) Chris Judd; Brisbane vs West Coast Eagles in 2004 at the Gabba. An amazing ball winning performance capped off with five goals. What was amazing was Judd's ability to win the ball at clearances and break away from the pack at full speed to kick the ball.
