The Australian Service Medal was the predecessor of the Australian Defence Medal ie service for roughly 4 years no combat no peace keeping. So when he said he had an australian service medal some in the rsl might relate it to their own experience. The Australian Service Medal has now changed to peace keeping service but the Australian defence medal has 'for service' engraved on it.
Unlike your examples this guy never claimed he had a combat or bravery medal which all,rsl, punters and the party would dissaprove of strongly, mistake but a minor one.

Don't think that is correct. The ASM stood on its own. The ADM is relatively knew (2008 or thereabouts)

Tricky for the Murdoch propaganda machine. They'd love to see Gestapo Pete in the Lodge, but campaigning for him is just going to further destabilize the Liberals and make it that much easier for Shorten to become PM. Besides, even though the fascist right love him, most people think Dutton is an odious tool and he's no certainty to even hold his own seat, let alone lead the Coalition to an election victory.

The ASM is not the predecessor of the ADM! They are awarded for totally different reasons!

One is awarded for non-warlike operational service post 1975; ASM. The other is for 4-years of service with good conduct; ADM.

There is no confusion at all with medals except by jokers like this Medal cheat who should be charge as a medal thief under the Defence ACT of 1903.

Another punter might say accidentally that someone won the Norm Smith, when they mean the Brownlow (and still be ridiculed), but the actual recipient isn't going to forget that!

Apparently the difference was one was for being in the forces 4 years, and the other is a distinction awarded for service overseas. That's a BIG difference.

His ADF discharge certificate lists any awards, medals etc the member receives during their service. His Certificate would have shown exactly what he received, as well as the lid of the box the medal was sent to him in!
