they already getting help - an academy and high draft picks over the past 5 years, their coach is a goose and Carlton shows what a good coach can do.
Well aren't you all high and mighty after a few wins, dont forget that you won the spoon last season...an academy that we paid for out of our pockets iirc. High draft picks that leave after 2 years to a footy state and get replaced with 2nd round picks. Yes you have a better coach but your list age profile means you should be around there or higher than where you currently are.

Brisbane only have 5 players taken with a first round pick: Rich, Mayes, Schache, Hipwood and Paparone who was an end of first round pick that year at pick 23.

The AFL then decided to placate the numpties and conspiracy nut jobs and include his salary in our cap - and despite the idiot who posted it earlier it's nowhere near $500k. He got a salary bump from the swans because he was doing more than what he was at the swans, but the salary is in line with what other scouts get paid by other clubs.
$680K over 6 years. 100K + 5% increase per year + signature of his son for the same period = cap cheating.

The only conspiracy was the AFL not punishing for it.

I don't really have an opinion on whether or not Brisbane should receive a priority pick. But...with the AFL probably still seething a little at Essendon. If Essendon win on the weekend and we go last. I would not be surprised if the AFL give us pick 1 & 2 and just use the "Brisbane need it excuse''which what they probably mean is its giving the Bombers the finger one more time. I would be pissed if i was Essendon supporter too.

I get that there's major differences, but it's not like the Broncos crowds dipped when the Titans came along whereas the Lions crowds have plummeted from the instant that the Suns joined. A 10k drop off in average crowds from 2010 to 2011 can't just be because the Lions weren't great, they were bottom 4 both seasons.

There's clearly been a cannibalisation of the Lions expat support base by the Suns. Games against the larger Vic teams are still drawing ok crowds but it seems like more than half the ground are supporting the Vic team. It's the games against non-Vic teams where the attendances have struggled massively.

I also would've thought that the Lions would draw on similar demographics that the Swans do, as AFL seems to be a someone upper-middle class sport in the northern states (much like Union). Sydney has a much, much bigger upper-middle class demographic than Brisbane so naturally the Lions need a more cross-demographic support base particularly sinxe the Suns taking a big chunk of their supporter base, and going on continually low and declining crowd numbers the Lions are failing to do.

I've been to Brisbane, Drugs Central/Gold Coast and 99% of SE QLD (and have family right next to Tweed's), and the support hasn't been cannibalized like you say it has been. A few expats ditched Brisbane for GC due to proximity but that's it. Fans aren't turning up because they're absolutely deplorable to watch. Brisbane need to win more and they'll get fans through the gates again watching them.

No place in Australia has more fair-weather sports fans than Brisbane/SE Queensland, so the Broncos/Roar have to keep winning to keep attendances up otherwise they'll be having crap attendance like the Lions too. If the Lions are fighting for flags, supporters are fighting for seats.

why? they cheated and to get pick 1 on the back of WADA imposed bans s a joke... when they get all their players back they will be pushing top 8 again with the added inclusion of the best available player from this years draft... or two top 10 selections if they decide to downgrade the pick.

Im not saying they dont deserve one, i was just giving my alternate.

I just dont buy into the "priority pick fixes all" game, i think a system where the lions can pluck non acedemy queenslanders for nothing for a couple of years would work better.

Can you name a few non-academy queenslanders in the draft system right now though?

Brisbane should only get assistance from the AFL like Melbourne got (administration, funding for an experienced, successful coach etc)

They don't deserve a Priority Pick for decade long incompetence and poor recruiting and trading decisions..

They're getting special treatment with their Academy picks anyway, that's a big enough leg up with draft assistance.

Carlton turned our shit around with a competent board and CEO (Steven Trigg has been terrific)

They should offload Rockcliffe and Hanley, and trade back into the draft that way (trading Henderson, Yarran and Menzel hasn't hurt Carlton at all, quite the opposite tbh)

The Broncos got 45,000 in the middle of a 5 game losing streak a couple weeks ago. They turn up for league no matter what

Lachie Weller didnt go through the acedemy in recent, then theres a group of older players. But it does seem that 95 percent of queenlanders go through the acedemies.

So really what you're suggesting is basically a non solution hey? The older players were around before academies mostly, so you'll find an even lower sample size of AFL capable players in QLD that somehow aren't a part of our academy. Unless you're suggesting some dodgy work where you somehow classify a Victorian kid as a Queenslander because he went to the big pineapple once? That'd obviously be far more damaging then a single priority pick.

Unless I've misunderstood you and you're saying the club can poach AFL listed players? Again, more damaging then a priority pick.

So your idea is either entirely ineffective or grossly worse for the balance of the competition then a priority pick, depending on which interpretation of your suggestion is legitimate.

Imo the PP is neither here nor there, 1 or 2, he will be a good player.........what we urgently need are proper facilities up to the same standard as all the other teams are enjoying.....but all this has been said before.

...and sacking Leppa now at this stage of the rebuild would be a further disaster for the club....we have a good list and kids coming through, with a few tweeks, that will be in place to take us into the future.

Our players need stability in their training methods, with up to date equipment in a clean air enviroment..

Gillon McLachlan generally pleased’ with state of Queensland football at AFL Commission meeting

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan says Queensland is not the code’s state of disrepair and the governing body was in for the long haul.

The AFL Commission met in Brisbane on Friday and spoke face to face with officials from the Lions, Suns and AFLQ.

The meeting was set down for Brisbane almost 12 months ago as part of the 150-year celebrations for Australian football in the state and the timing of the visit had nothing to do with the horror year for the Lions and Suns.

The Queensland clubs sit in the bottom four and crowds are poor.

McLachlan said he was “generally pleased with football in Queensland’’ when considering the growth of community and women’s football and the talent coming out of the Lions and Suns academies.

He said both Brisbane and Gold Coast wanted to be able to spend their full salary cap and football department cap to be competitive.

“We always take a long-term view. Everywhere. Queensland particularly. We will continue to invest for long-term growth,’’ McLachlan said.

“I don’t think anyone’s denying that both clubs have had tough years and there’s a variety of reasons for that. Both clubs have been decimated by injuries.

“It’s investment in people and resources that are the priorities for both clubs.

“We are very confident where the (playing) lists are at. It’s making sure we work hard to maximise what we can do with those lists.’’

Helping Brisbane get a new training and administration base is a must for headquarters.

The AFL has already committed $5 million for the base and while it is unlikely to tip in more cash, it will assist the Lions in setting up their new home at the airport.

“It’s clear the facilities at the Lions are a concern,” he said.

“In the end we will need to have broader partnerships than that, no matter if we increased it, to get this facility to work.

“We’re clear now about what the Lions’ priority is there and we’ll work with them to secure an outcome.

“It’s a priority. We’ll be going as fast as we can. I think we’ve come a long way in the last couple of months.”

He said salary cap concessions to help the Queensland clubs retain players was “highly unlikely’’ and the number of re-signings at the Lions in the past 12 months was a “show of faith’’ in the club’s administration and culture.

McLachlan said while it was important that Brisbane “own decisions and own change’’, the AFL reserved the right to have “tough conversations’’ with the Lions.

Update on commission..

But why are the Queensland teams injuries so excessive. We (Brisbane) have had a better run this year up until the last couple of weeks but there has been points over the last two seasons where both sides have had 17 - 19 players unavailable for selection.

I have tried to bring this up before (started a thread) but generally get dismissed as a biased Brisbane fan or shouted down because I have forgoten that club X had to deal with injuries also.

It has to be more than bad luck. I aknowledge there is a bit of a reluctance to ask players to play through injuries when a side is out of finals contention and this may inflate the injury toll occasionally. Others have mentioned as both sides are quite young there can be a flow on affect as the players struggle to carry the extra workload.

But I also wonder if there could be other factors at play. Harder grounds up here in Queensland have been mentioned before and I dont think its a coincidence that the two clubs with the worst training/ medical facilities are also the two clubs with the worst injury tolls in recent years.

Hopefully as our list ages and we finally get a decent facility our injury list will return to a more acceptable level. Also hope Gold Coast can get a midfield on the park next year, as I think they have the talent to play finals.

So in other words the AFL plan on doing nothing at all about the problems in Queensland and are blaming injuries as an excuse well then the AFL can go to Hell for all I care
Actually to be more accurate.... The AFL has made made lots of money in TV rights. Victorian crowds are still strong So is SA and the WA teams. The AFL has decided to ignore brisbane and sweep you guys under the rug. That is ****ed up.

THE LIONS and Suns will no longer be the AFL’s poor cousins with head office to inject an extra $2.5m for them to match the rest of the competition on football department spending.

The AFL has promised Brisbane its heaviest hitters will join the club in negotiations with the State Government and Brisbane City Council for the extra funding required to lock away their new base at the airport.

The AFL plans to give both the Lions and Suns the capacity to spend 100 per cent of the salary cap and the soft cap on football department spending.

Brisbane were $1.2m and the Suns $1.3m under the $9.3m football department soft-cap this season. The Lions also did not pay the entire salary cap.

The salary cap currently stands at $10.37m but will increase significantly next season in the first year of the new $2.5b broadcast deal.

Brisbane needs to get packing and make way for "Gold coast". It is a new age where right wing governments will rule forever and thatcherist values will dominate and eradicate the weak.

This is only more ironic as Brisbane is in the SE QLD region, which is the "heart" of our nations conservative values. I would be surprised to see it's fans offer compassion, empathy, handouts and not a tsp of concrete.

The club should fall on it's sword otherwise will be propped up by the hypocrisy of it's fanbases values.

Brisbane has twice the members of GC. Also we're approaching the AFL for support, not so called 'right wing governments,' wtf...

I think a lot of this is a step in the right direction but the Lions spending 100% of the salary cap is completely wrong.

yep, i have always thought there was something wrong there how can our list come anywhere near the value of lists like the hawks, cats, swans, giants etc?

Guess we will front load a lot of contracts and make a play for a big fish.

The other benefit of a rebuilding team paying the full cap is that you can trade out senior players to other clubs and pay part of their salary at their new club in exchange for a better trade. Just have to think creatively.
