Mad Mondaying mate?

I honestly think he already is our best forward and by some margin. Sumich was a good forward, but he was never the best. For two consecutive years now Kennedy has been the best in the league.

Sumich also had the advantage of playing in an almost state team, where as Kennedy, until recently, has played in terrible teams his whole career and if not for injury would likely have won another Coleman.

His pressure, consistency, leadership and impressive goal average post-Carlton give him the points for me.

You couldn't take Sumich over JJK in an Eagles all time team. You just couldn'.

Peter Sumich :

1989 - 45.28 (19 games)
1990 - 90.61 (23 games)
1991 - 111.89 (25 games)
1992 - 82.46 (19 games)
1993 - 76.57 (21 games)
1994 - 49.42 (18 games)
1995 - 7.3 (5 games)
1996 - 21.11 (7 games)
1997 - 33.17 (13 games)

Total - 514.354 (150 games/9 seasons)

Josh Kennedy :

2008 - 7.4 (7 games)
2009 - 31.17 (16 games)
2010 - 41.19 (22 games)
2011 - 59.38 (23 games)
2012 - 18.14 (9 games)
2013 - 60.23 (21 games)
2014 - 61.33 (20 games)
2015 - 80.55 (25 games)
2016* - 75.35 (21 games)

Total - 432.238 (164 games/9 seasons)

As I posted earlier, people forget just how good Sumich was especially in that period from 1990-93 before he tailed off thanks to dodgy hammies and an increasingly negative game style adopted by Malthouse. Kennedy has been more consistent (and more accurate) than Sumich without ever quite reaching the same heights.

He's a good chance to reach 80 goals again this year so I'd think Kennedy is shading Sumich now but it's not by as much as some of you young pups might think

A straight goal comparison doesn't work in comparing FF's now and from the early 90's. The game has changed so much. Suma never won a coleman and only really got close'ish in 1990 and that's mainly because Lockett, Dunstall and Ablett all missed games.

Did love Sumich though, but think JK is a more rounded player, that might be because of what is expected of FF's now days.

Suma has one of the best records in finals of all time. Never let us down when it counted.[/QUOTE]

Suma is my all time fav Eagle, but Kennedy is so much better. Kennedy has already over taken him as a footballer.

The goal kicking comparison done a few posts back doesn't mean much with the way the game is played.

Stats are hard to compare between eras. For instance Gary Ablett junior has had more career tackles than Tony Liberatore.

Love JK.

People underrating the majesty of Suma though. Didn't he hold (or still does) the most goals by a left footer?
First left footer to kick 100 goals in a season

Buddy has gone past him for goals by a left footer now as did Lloyd

Thanks for the stats. I was a kid watching Sumich so I'm one of the young pups ;) Sumich more dominant but Kennedy more skilled, thoughts?

Sumich was also of an era where positional play was still intact. So he had more space to lead into and work with. Was a gun in his prime, but it was a short window. By late 1993 he was a shell of his former self.

Kennedy has been better for longer. Definitely has to work harder in regard to moving up the ground, chasing and tackling. Kennedy is easily our best full forward ever. He's just been doing it for a more consistent period than Sumich. I'd also say Kennedy is a far more accurate than Sumich was. It's not often that Kennedy has an average day at the office. He's also a better mark. Sumich took some beauties in his big year of 1991 but he mainly enjoyed them lace out on his chest, whereas Kennedy often has to stretch more in contests. Sumich probably only beats Kennedy with freak goals. That boy could pull some pearlers out.

For some reason never trusted him fully as a kick. Not sure if that was because he was a lefty or not...
