So I guess after our first win there didn't seem to be a lot of people worthy of being dropped. Most players seemed to play pretty well but what are your thoughts on who should go and who should stay?

Rockliff: Injury unconfirmed as a calf/achilles but seems unlikely to play next week after getting subbed off. Question is who comes in to replace him? Would we do a like for like sub and get in one of our midfielders from the seconds, maybe a clearance guy like Harwood or maybe give Beams ago? Haven't heard any reports about Beams from the ressies guys for a few weeks and Harwood was named as an emergency so must still be close. Possibly Raines comes back in for Rockliff and releases Polks into a more attacking role.

Maguire: Does he still have a role in our team? Spent time in the backline and made a few howlers, then went forward and did a few good things without making a huge impact. Considering Mcgrath comes up is he the man to make way for him? Some say Maguire was lucky to come back into the team without playing any games in the ressies and has lacked fitness at times. Has been hit and miss, could be time for a spell.

Austin: Got the call up after some good form in the reserves and did a few good things. Liked his desperation in the back half of the ground, threw himself into contests in the last quarter and has a pretty big kick. Didn't break the game open and looks to be the most likely to get omitted. I think he should keep his spot but if he doesn't perform against the Crows he could be in trouble if Polec plays well in the ressies.

Sheldon: Has looked quite good in the last few games. Kicked a goal and held his own in a lot of contests. Particularly remember him taking on three Roos boys on the wing, managing to keep the ball in play and hold it up to allow Banfield to come through and take the ball. Should see him next week :thumbsu:

Retzlaff: Played pretty well for a tall in a game that was terrible weather for strong overhead marking. In the second half with Clark playing much further up the ground did some good things with Brown in the forward line. Made his defender accountable at all times as from what I saw all the 3rd up's against Brown was normally the guy manning up on Clark. Acorn is knocking on the door with 6 goals in the reserves to keep the pressure on but Retzlaff has done enough to keep his spot for another week.

Stiller: I only bring him up because other people will in this thread I'm sure. Has been part of a cohesive defensive unit that is working extremely efficiently. The unit managed to stop too much of a blow out against Essendon and with the Inside 50's in the Kangaroo's favor for the first half managed to help keep the Lions in touch for the second half assault.

So I guess all I can see changing is this:

In: Raines
Out: Rockliff

Harwood could be a smokey chance at coming in for Rockliff but with most of the guys in the reserves not hugely impressing I won't expect to many changes.

Given our poor stats in the clearances I think we need to start giving more games to Harwood.

Maybe Stiller can tag and Raines could become the clearance specialist.

Maguire is a frustrating one. Based on form he should be dropped. I would argue even Collier has performed better than him.

But if we drop Maguire we don't really have anyone else to play his role other than Patful, and Patfull has been doing okay as a third tall/defensive back flanker and might find the going tougher as a second tall defender/CHB.

Possible ins: Beams, Cornelius, Harwood, Hawksley, Karnezis, McGrath, Polec and Raines.

Possible outs: Austin, Bewick, Green, Maguire, Retzlaff, Rockliff and Stiller.

* I think McGrath will be an automatic IN
* I suspect Rockliff will be an OUT due to injury
* Voss commented that Maguire played injured, so may also be out
* I'm not 100% sure on what the thinking with Raines is

So...

IN: McGrath, Raines
OUT: Rocklif, Maguire

Try and give Retzlaff, Austin, Bewick and Green a run of games.

Without looking at Adelaide's team, that could leave us undersized down back. Karnezis could be a smokey, in which case he Austin would be the first one out. Clark could also be an option, although it seems unlikely.

I thought I heard Voss state that he thought Goose was brave for coming back out onto the ground with an injury in order to assist with rotations...

Clark continues to fail up forward. Give him a chance down back. He would match up well on McKernan this week and could give some run. Bring Cornelius in and let him play the third tall role he is made for.

For me:

Out: Rockliff, Maguire, O'Brien, Bewick
Ins: Raines, Cornelius, Harwood, Polec

O'Brien is just looking a little like he needs a rest. Give him the week off and play another youngster. Voss is developing a tendancy to drop the subs the following week and Bewick has not done much to demand a spot. I would give Polec another go despite not going great in the ressies. We could use some outside run and he could ne a nice option.

FWIW Raines is not a clearance guy and never has been. He is a tagger or nothing for us.

I thought Bewick did a good job after coming on last week.

I'd probably prefer Austin or Sheldon dropped before Bewick. They did a few nice things but I'd rate Bewick ahead of them ATM.

A couple of people have suggested Clark down back. He worked well as a loose man in defence but I would hate to see him in a position where he is accountable the whole game. I think he would end up giving away a few free kicks and 50 metre penalties, he's always pushing and bumping players when the contest is over. I can't see this move happening this season with what the coaches/Clark have said over the pre-season.

adcock maguire hanley

Don't think Clarke is fit. I think Retzlaff did enough. Power and Patfull too!

Really liked Sheldons game on the weekend, Banfields been struggling and having the extra support in applying forwardline pressure. It really seemed to help Banfields game I thought so in saying that I can't see Sheldon coming out.

I can't see any changes being made unless the forced through injury so if Rocky doesn't come up and Goose is unavailable I think Raines or Polec will come in for Rocky and if Goose doesn't come up I would like to see Acorn comeback and throw Retz down back, but I have a feeling we may see Collier come in for Goose.

I think the most amusing part is that over on our board, a number of people are insisting that McKernan should be shifted to defense to play on Clark :p

Maybe Stiller can tag and Raines could become the clearance specialist.

Sorry if this is perceived as negative, but I'd say the only player in the league that Stiller could possibly tag and do a serviceable job is Raines himself.

There must be some reason Stiller is still getting a game, but I can't work it out. I seriously thought that when he returned late last season (after Selwood was knocked out I think) it was for a couple of thank you games. Surely we have thanked him enough.:o

I disagree that Sheldon should be dropped. He has added a bit to the team and looks a lot more complete than Bewick at this stage and to be honest has impressed me in his two games back.

I agree that raines should come back in. Although i wouldnt mind vossy keeping ho+in the ressies for a few more weeks to work on his gameday kicking and decision making...he has potential to be more then just a shutdown tagger.

So with that said.

In: mcgrath, harwood
Out: goose, rocky

Note: clark at chb

I don't think Clark will line up across the backline. I don't thing he was very accountable and diciplined at times on Saturday night and that could be a disaster if he is given a man to play on. I reckon he could be really good in the ruck rover role, getting in close and throwing his weight around and laying a few hard tackles :thumbsu:. Put that aggression to use I say.

Here's a team I would like to see:

Adcock Merrett Hanley
O'Brien Patful Stiller
Rich Black Green
Banfield Retzlaff Mcgrath
Acorn Brown Power
Luey M.Clark Redden
Int: Harwood Polks Sheldon
Sub: Bewick

Ins: Harwood, Cornelius, McGrath
Outs: Austin, Maguire, Rockliff

Probably a bit undersized down back, but i really want to see that forward line setup. IMO get Clark out of there and bring in Acorn as the 3rd tall while Stakes is out. Brown/Retzlaff/Acorn is some pretty bad ass goal kicking threats. Mcgrath/Banfield/Green/Power for forward pressure rotating would also be rad.

I would be giving O'Brien a bit of a rest at this point. Is still doing some nice things, but needs to inject himself into the game a bit more. Bewick may be lucky to hold his spot.

I'd like to see how the Brown/Retz/Clark triumvirate work in dry conditions before making a call. If Clark is going to be anything in the forward half it's going to be CHF, so now that Brown's back, give him a decent run at it.

Agree with this comment Grim.

I would also throw Clark onto a wing or loose in defence. Is it just me or has Clark looked disinterested and lazy this year?

I'm just watching (with one eye) the first half of the North game for the first time. Just prior to Sheldon's first shot on goal Brown had the ball about 65m out looking for a target I50. The camera behind Brown perfectly captured Mitch standing 10m out from the goal with his back directly to Browny waving his arms in the air, obviously appealing for a free. JB, rather wisely, opted to kick it to Sheldon in the pocket. Not good enough Mitch and emblematic of his performance I50 this year. You don't see Browny carrying on like a pork chop like that when the ball's in play.
