It's green or bust for them against the better defences. The problem is that we definitely aren't one of the better defences and made Koshitzke look good last week. Bring Worrell in to cover Hamill. Can play Walker, Thilthorpe, Fog up forward and drop Himmelberg back if needed.
We will definitely go taller this week. Last week was the wake up call the selectors needed IMO.

Regarding GWS, it should be pointed out that right now they have the 3rd lowest 'Points for' after 6 rounds (71 points a game). So scoring has not been easy for them regardless of who they play.

In: Worrell Berry O'Connor Newchurch? Mackay sub
Out: Hamill inj Fogarty McHenry/Hately Rowe? Lynch sub

Brown Butts Kelly
Smith Worrell Doedee
Sholl Laird Seedsman
McAdam Walker Berry
Murphy Himmelberg Thilthorpe

ROB Keays Schoenberg

McPherson Rowe/Newchurch McHenry/Hately O'Connor

Out Hamill Rowe

In McAsey Berry.

Hamill injured. We need a second KPD.
Rowe, the least effective of our small forwards. If Berry is fit bring him back.

Swap Lynch for DMac as sub. Rest Lynch.

Round 1 vs North Melbourne, 2016

Picked Van Berlo instead of Hartigan. Played Talia, Lever and Cheney as our tall defense. North's three talls kicked 7 goals and we lost by 10 points. Van Berlo had 9 touches and was dropped for Hartigan the following week (he retired 2 games later). We missed the top 4 that year by 1 game.

Yes I still remember this because it was one of the stupidest selection calls I can ever remember.
I remember that one. Selecting VB was up there with the Lynch sub fiasco

I would persevere with Rowe a little longer.
He offers something different to the other 2 small fwds., game intelligence & goal sense.

Out: McPherson, Hamill (inj), Lynch (inj)

In: McAsey, Berry, Mackay (sub)

Doedee takes McPherson's medium role, McAsey takes their second tall.

McAsey in his press conference said he hasn't been training much as he's had a few niggles recently, I happy enough to give him a few more weeks in the SANFL, he's signed on now he isn't going anywhere. We need to look after his body and not push it too hard

I get why people want to bring another tall defender into the team, given the way Butts struggled to do it all on his own last week. But why are so many people keen to bring in 2 talls - I've seen many permutations of McAsey/Worrell/Murray, usually with 2 of them selected.

McAsey is listed at 197cm, Worrell at 195cm, and Murray 195cm. All are genuine KPD height.

Surely having Butts + 2x KPD would make our defence too tall and immobile, just as playing all of Walker/Fogarty/Lynch/Frampton did at the other end of the ground.

I'm expecting only one change in defence this week - Hamill (inj) replaced by Murray. That fixes our height problem, but doesn't make us too tall. Murray seems to be preferred over Worrell & McAsey right now, having played 1 game and been sub for 2 more.

The need to look after his body and not push too hard has nothing to do with his contractual status. It's something we needed to do before he signed, no different to the need after his signing.

Not if they're playing Jesse Hogan (195cm), Ricciardi (195cm) Himmelberg (194cm) and Finlayson (196cm)

In which case we get ROB to drop back into defence, and just run it out of there as soon as it hits the ground.

I am extremely cynical about the recent explosion in ‘leadership’ (and not just in footy). I vomit whenever I see ‘leadership’ in some 1& year old kid’s draft profile.
Mackay doesn’t have to be vocal, or issue instructions, to have value in young players’ development. A good example - demonstrating the work required - is worth just as much as words, and more than words not backed up by action. People learn by seeing how it is done.
Now, it would help if he had a bit more to show, but hard work and commitment are essential and he shows them every week.

So in your mind experience must equal leadership and young people can't be leaders. Ok boomer..

Does anyone remember a game where we went in very lean for talls in defence
We omitted Hartigan at the time I think
My memory isn’t all that precise but it was huge mistake I think by Pyke at the time

Round 1 against the Roos in 2016 I think. VB favoured instead, dropped next week and played 2 more totally wasteful games.

Yeah. I don't think anyone here agreed with the selection for that game!

On the other hand, I don't see the upcoming game in the same light. GWS aren't going to play the four talls, and Worrell coming in for Hamill
should do enough to redress any height problems, even if by coincidence only.
