Because IMO I don't believe this group can win a flag, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Our hope is for the next gen to get as much experience and develop as fast as possible. We can't take our eye off the future for the now when the now is only a tease. We are nowhere near deserving of our #1 spot and will be found out in finals and the club internally must have a sense of that reality. We'd be better off with Bergman in than Sutcliffe, if he is to be a key part of the future.
Nah, I dont buy this at all. It is what the rest of the comp feels about us, but stuff them! We have proved we can beat anyone, and we can do it in the finals too.

Yes we have some flaws & gaps, but so has everyone, The fact that its happening now is good IMO. The club knows what the flaws are, and we have the run home to work on it & be ready for finals. If we get this right, we have as much chance as anyone, and will have the advantages of the top spot.

Sutcliffe isn’t as horrendous as people may make out but he’s a finished product. He is the player he is, a barely competent role player, and he’s never becoming more than that.
Barely competant role player at Fremantle who played the vast majority of his games at the club from 2013-2015.

You know, when Fremantle finished 3rd and made a Grand Final, finished 4th and were eliminated in straight sets and won the minor premiership and lost a prelim.

Remember how we should just pick Marshall no matter how badly he plays simply because we win when he's in the side? Well look the evidence of Sutcliffe just playing for Freo.

But we'll scream about Joel Garner not getting selected, all because he looked "ok" against Gold Coast, and "not too bad" against Geelong last year. Ignore his rubbish performances against GWS and the Dogs though. Oh and when the heat came on in the SANFL finals he was poor as well.

Our forward pressure has been down for a couple of weeks. Sutcliffe in is surely about trying to find the right combination to take in to finals. Ultimately, I think that player is Farrell but he, Motlop and Woodcock weren’t quite getting the job done and left the door open for a less skilled but more reliable Sutcliffe.

Surely Sam Hayes gets named an emergency
Wont know for sure until about 5pm when they have to formally name the squad of 26.

I don't like him coming in when we have better options but i prefer him any day over Motlop.
There you go. You have answered your own question. Just maybe the coaching staff believe there are no better options. If they did, one would expect that they would have used it. FMD.

That's a pretty pessimistic view. That's the approach to take if we're not winning the flag this year.

If we're winning the flag this year though we just play whoever is best right the fu** now, even if they're a role player who isn't getting better because who cares if they're gone next year - we'll have already won the flag by then.

We aren't a rebuilding team right now, we're a challenging team. We have to pick the team like we are challenging, not on future potential.

I tend to agree.
If we were going to give the young guys a go it probably should have been a few weeks ago.
Whether by accident or design we now sit top and like any of the top teams on their day we are in with a chance for the year.
We’re now in a position where finishing top 2 gives us our best shot. As such we go with whatever will bank us wins.

While not a huge Sutcliffe fan, on form I’d play him before Motlop.
At this stage of the season picking an untried youngster is difficult due to the lack of games to show form.
Personally I would have stuck with Woodcock but I think they must see Sutcliffe as being a more consistent performer throughout the game and he provides a bigger body.

It sounds like they want to rotate a few through the team to keep them at AFL speed as we come into finals.

Sure they aren't the shiny names we'd be interested in seeing run around but the selections have been pretty consistent. Woocock maybe the only one coming from the clouds.

Strong name to repeat post ratio lol

With the exception of Huston and Ladhams/MG, probably the strongest team Port has put on the paddock for a while. And almost the best available team, I'm not 100% sure on Sutcliffe. Port should have a good win this week if they truely are top 4 team.

If the GF was today and everyone one was available, Huston for Bonner, Ladhams/MG for Westhoff and Woodcock for Sutcliffe would be the changes I would consider. The fitness staff have the team peaking at the correct end of the season.

Because our midfield is completely front running, our defence can't function under any pressure and our forward line is simple to clog

Our midfield sucks, our back line sucks, our forward line sucks.

We must have some kind of genius coach to be sitting on top of the ladder all season :p

Had to laugh when I saw this picture in the game review thread on the club website. It said
"were also dealt a big injury blow when star forward Lance Franklin was ruled out for the rest of the season. Franklin has not played all season, having managed just ten games last year."

Couldn't help but think of Franklin sitting on his arse this year collecting $1.4m - before Covid adjustments, $1.3m last year for 10 games and who knows how many for $1.5m next year.

I'm glad he's not playing against us as he has cut us up in so many big matches but anyone else getting paid that much for such little output would be hammered but for Buddy its look how many jumpers he has sold, the publicity in Sydney, the first 4 years he did good, etc.

Jack Graham debuted in Round 22 2017 and then five weeks later kicked 3 goals in a premiership.
Yes but Schulzy you're forgetting that "We've got a long way to go to become anything like the Richmond Football Club".

The most farcical one sided umpiring aside he'd have got the Swans a flag in 2016, so Sydney made the right call. It's costing them now (and until he retires), but given they should have had a flag out of it, every side in the competition would take post-flag pain as worth the price of a flag.

I do that deal 100000 times over

Definitely worth it, wasn't his fault they never won a GF (Umpires and Feel Good Story...)

When you are taking up 10%+ of the salary cap and play less than half a season in 2019, no games in 2020 and who knows how many in 2021 and are taking up about 8% in 2022 and doubt he will play much in 2022, it limits the swans ability to go get other players to keep pushing for that he flag he hasn't quiet delivered for the club.

I get that this is the narrative now, but I don't remember the 2016 GF being that bad. Should I rewatch it? It's also possible that I was quite drunk at the time

Yep, they almost just need to bank draft capital for a few years because that deal is now an anchor for them, as we all knew it would be in the latter stages.

Still would have made the deal if I was them though. Gotta be ambitious, you never know when your next flag chance might roll around.
