Think we are too tall down back with zero ground ball talent, especially if wet

Strange about no walker.

Maybe Wagner plays more defensive with Omera playing midfield time

Would almost think Draper should have come in
It’s tic for tac with Hawhtorn.
They’ve gone with 3 talls both back and forward.
Wagner should be playing off half back for Saturday. JOM’s big body is key

Has had to change roles due to Pearce injuries.
He’s not a 1 on 1 defender. Wants to be Barass. Unfortunately he can’t due to lack of defensive depth
Nah it’s something that Rawlings did before Pearce got injured. Can’t understand why cos it takes away his one strength in intercepting and forces him to be much more accountable

Alex pierce needs to step down as captain. He can’t even got on the field. Too injury prone
Can’t get on the field? Do you even follow the team?

He’s played 12 of 16 games this year
Played 15 last year
23 games in 2023
21 games in 2022

Yeah he’s missed a few games, but you are seriously exaggerating the situation.

I dont think its a better team with JOM in it and Ras out.

Think the teams are equivalent, therefore given Ras is the future play Ras to set us up for the future

I wanted both in.

I probably would have dropped a tall if I had the choice, or maybe Dudley

Banfield is probably the sub anyway, which he is good at.

Selection will become a lot tighter when Young comes back. Simpson is the other player is best 22, but out of the squad.

I'd personally expect Dudley to be sub, he hasn't had much impact and his TOG has still been low, which is unsurprising given the base coming in towards the end of pre-season

ras has unfortunately shown hes not up to afl inside mid level physically, hence the low TOG and really has no point of difference atm (unlike MJ), we are a better side with JOM in

I've always been big on Ras being carried so that it pays off down the line, but only if his current output matches JOM. If JOM actually genuinely starts playing better rather than a momentum / ball movement killer then of course he gets in.

JOM has been good in every game hes played this season tbh, happy for him to come in and provide some extra physicality and ball use in a spot we need it badly

Switta helps but I would have gone further

Difference between a talented team and a good team right there
i do wonder if its partly a tactical issue that we so often are down on tackles i50. grander scheme are we gaining something by not prioritising that pressure? not sure but its definitely disheartening to see teams walk it out so easily against us

Not true. I responded to this in a different thread which I didn't realise was not the game thread. But will repeat myself.

Using your definition of talls for Hawthorn, we've gone with 4 tall forwards (Jackson, Amiss, Treacy, Voss) and 4 tall backs (Cox, McDonald, Chapman, Worner). And I'm not even including Ryan or Banfield who have significant height and lack speed.

Wagner has been playing his best football midfield, I will be surprised if he moves back. Even if he does, it's just Wagner and Clark for fast rebounders. Throw in Chapman if you want to say he's not a tall.

In contrast, Hawthorn can choose from Hardwick, Amon, Impey, D'Ambrosio, Jiath as their fast rebounders.

For us to go "tic for tac" with Hawthorn in the backline, we would be playing with Cox, Chapman, Worner, and then Clark, Wagner, Walker, Simpson, ???, for the fast rebounders. That's not what we are doing, partly because we can't. Not saying it is wrong. We don't have to copy them and should have beaten them in Tassie last year. But we have a very different setup.

The players vote for the captain at Freo. If the players want him as captain they'll vote him in again. Brayshaw and Serong are both more than capable of stepping in for the games that he's injured.

It's why the commentary on whether Freo should "appoint" Brayshaw or Serong as captain is silly. It's up to the playing group

Lets see if they can get past 5 tackles in the fwd line this week that’s on the coaching , should be a non negotiable.

If we have 30 inside fifties for 20 marks and goals, ten ground ball gets and shots - no opposition handling of the ball at all - that's fine too.

Sydney started the game at their half forward line, so they had a lot of tackles around their forward fifty. It didn't get into ours much.

We tend to set up more across the middle and half forward line to take our intercepts, so we commit fewer players to the forward 50. That said, I think our scoring efficiency per inside 50 is pretty good, too, so there are less opportunities for forward 50 tackles. From memory Sydney have a very low scoring efficiency inside 50, so they rely a lot more on forward pressure. I think that makes sense...

Agree to a point, Raz has a good physical presence imo and has improved his kicking significantly but his lack of burst speed is really holding him back. I wanted him to have a reasonable stretch of games to be judged and sadly he is just not demanding selection.

really? i have had the opposite opinion of him, while hes tall, he seems to get brushed passed and pushed aside at the contest far too easily, doesnt lay solid stopping tackles and struggles to break free himself of tackles.
