Prediction Changes: Round 4 Vs Carlton

Also we are missing Walsh, Docherty and Cuningham which definitely evens up the midfield battle.

Jackson/Fyfe/Young/Serong/Brayshaw vs De Koning/Cripps/Cerra/Hewett/Kennedy. Both teams will roll more through there but they are the main ones.
I remember watching you guys beat us up at Marvel with Paddy Dow having a day out. Our midfield was a shell of its regular self, will be a ding ding battle this time.

Can’t help but think the Cripps baby could be the biggest factor here. A Carlton midfield with no Walsh and Cripps has to be taken advantage of and our group should dominate there. Cripps makes it a lot harder to stop the big boys up front getting clean entries from stoppage and we seem to have really nailed down stopping teams in transition.

De Koning is a rare talent, but he'll have his work cut out taking on Jackson. Jackson, Young & Fyfe with Brayshaw and Serong.
Mmmmm nice

soz, we prefer to lose after the siren following a dubious free kick that is awarded 60m downfield and taken by the 2nd Carlton player closest to the ball that surprisingly happens to be the better kick of the 2.

I totally disagree this game is 80% in the head and a players attitude is a crucial part of what they do. Being overconfident leads to players not doing the hard things and assuming it will happen or someone else will do it. I was merely responding to a post that someone said Carlton has built confidence from beating us easily in recent years. While that may be good for some it’s a two way street and being overconfident can lead to poor effort. You even mention that action builds confidence! Why does that matter if confidence is irrelevant??

There's a lot that can go on in the head, but AFL's totally played out on the ground.

Confidence without some corresponding actions is delusion. Conversely, action (at its most direct) doesn't require high or low confidence to be effective.

So....who's our negotiator with Baby Cripps?

He played inside mid for Peel last season. He is pretty good.
I find it curious that we have all these mids playing small/medium forward. Small forward is such a specialist position, you either have that goal nous or you dont. Willie Rioli can be out of shape and as high as a kite but still would be able to find the middle of the big sticks.

Singularly I love banners and switta and see some hope in emmett but collectively thats a big chunk of our forward line that arent natural forwards.. albeit banners has a wonderful knack of finding a crucial goal.

Can't fathom what a baby Cripps would look like given he already has a baby head. It'll be baby-baby head. Baby head-ception. Just mind blowing stuff.

Yep - the fix is in - afl manipulating Carlton results through the umpires. Got a spare tin foil hat for me too?

We've had actual audio evidence of umpires (from their mic feed which they didn't know was being played on a radio station), where the umpire's boss in the stands was congratulating the field umpires after paying a bogus free kick against Ballantyne, "just as we had talked about before the game". They literally went into a game ... a preliminary final no less ... with instructions to pay free kicks against Fremantle. And were then rewarded with all 3 getting the GF the next week. So excuse us if we believe the outcomes of games can be manipulated through umpires.

13 of Carlton’s differential comes from a single game btw. And yes that was last week.

Us losing the free kick count by their average otherwise won’t be the reason we win or lose the game.

Got to love West Coast still having a positive free kick count. Their fans have been telling me for years it’s because they’re first to the ball, more disciplined etc. but neither of those things could be anywhere close to true atm - they’re literally the worst team since the expansion sides and anyone that debates that is a moron.

Banners has nearly always been good for a goal a game.

I reckon given how much that is being focused on in the media, it could work for us. The umpires always over compensate, Curnow and McKay could find it very difficult this week

🤞
God I hope so !

All I ask is a fair crack to prove we are who we think we are or are we kidding ourselves

Walters, Frederick, Sturt, Delean and Emmett were all drafted as forwards, problem is they aren’t up to the level (yet?) Schultz was also drafted as a forward. We are playing Banners as a forward/wing because we don’t have anyone better available. Switta is also a midfielder who’s be pushed into a pressure forward role because there isn’t room in the middle or anyone better in our forward depth. Simpson and Erasmus look like getting games as a forward because it’s our weakest line. I was really hoping Emmett and Sturt would cement their positions in the team this year, however form and injury have stifled that for now.

It’s not exactly transferable to win/loss ratio. I don’t subscribe to those theories in principle, if you’re good enough you can still win despite that
Other than the last time we played them when we got legitimately pantsed on our home turf go back and watch the previous 4 or 5 games and tell me that the poor umpiring didn’t cost us the games

Also on the free kick differential, this isn’t just a Freo observation.
Look on any game day or general chats thread on BF and you’ll see that there are a hell of a lot of people out there agreeing that Carlton do regularly get the rub of the green

Complaining about umpires already is a little silly
I take offence to that

I don’t like complaining about umpires and think it’s piss poor using it as an excuse that the game was lost because of biased or poor umpiring……MOST of the time .

I umpire our local competition weekly and have done so for years so have been on both sides of the fence

But this Carlton side the last few years has an uncanny knack of drawing the softest free kicks I’ve seen since peak Margetts and WC and there are many many people on BF and that I speak to regularly who have observed the same thing so there has to be something in it .
