Preview Changes v Adelaide Crows (R2)

having to refresh the memory checked up on our previous matches in SA, shocking....lost all 3 to Adelaide, lost last 3 to Port (though the 2021 Prelim. win stands out, hopefully an omen for this year), and haven't won in 3 Gather Round matches...this game will tell us so much
One of the GR matches was v PA and another at Norwood Oval.

Darcy kicked 2 goals directly from forward 50 stoppages - one was a free kick, one was grabbing it out of the ruck.

If Sam Darcy gets to ruck against a 2nd-gamer Toby Murray rucking D50 against him, this could be a key matchup for us.

My absolute favourite is when he just goes 'yoink' in the forward 50 in a ruck contest.

How far away is Treloar? Is he short of a gallop? Absolute best 23 when up and going.
He played VFL and kicked a goal but I haven't heard a peep of how he actually went/game time etc.

We need to play the long game with Treloar. There's zero upside to rushing him back into the AFL team, even with an increased interchange. Let him build up some confidence slowly over the next couple of weeks and actually get some sustained performances into him.

Footscray has a bye on the weekend of March 28 and there is no VFL on weekend of April 12, so he'll be getting little match practise.

I think the plan will be to play ADZ as a 25th man and an aim of 50% game time unless we get injuries. Does anyone know do teams have a rough plan on when players are rotated before the game. I assume there is plan on the amount of game time for each player that needs to be adapted in game depending on how the game is going and injury.

75 rotations per team across 5 bench spots

Meaning 15 rotations per quarter, meaning 3/4 rotations per bench spot per quarter.

Not what actually happens in reality though, because the 5th bench slot might be used once/twice per quarter.

So you likely go something like per bench slot

4/4/2/2/1 per bench slot per quarter rotation

4 is for starting mids - Bont, Libba, Kennedy
4 is for rotating mid/forward and outside players: Bramble, West, Hynes, Freijah
2 is for rotating outside backs: Sellwood, Jacques, Budarick, Dale
2 is for ruck/key forwards - to get English off and then on again once per quarter.
1 is for tactical slack/injury/tactical benching (ie, you want to start with all of English, Darcy and Naughton on the ground, but you want to stagger when you take them off).

You also want to keep a few rotations up your sleeve as well - you don't want to play with 17 players if theoretically two of your players got injured with 2 minute to go, for example.

Obviously, this isn't a hard and fast rule, and this overlap and don't play out and positional groups flow into each other - and play gets stuck on the other side of the field etc. but this is generally how it works.

This is also how you end up with some players getting 30% TOG in one quarter - your one rotation on, might be the 2nd of the 2 rotations in the 3rd/4th slot (ie, those 2 rotations take place 1 3rd and 2 3rd into the quarter, so you play 10 minutes for 30% TOG).

This is maybe how we'd set up. Teams doing different things with their rucks do it differently - e.g, Hawks had Reeves and Meek split almost 50/50, while Carlton had Hudson O'Keefe play next to no minutes to merely only chop out Pittonet off the bench.

Ryan Gardner was/is ahead of his time. 2 years ago Ryan was dutifully spoiling anything he could get to ... and he could get to most of them. Problem was no-one else was on the same page ... they were all 2 years behind ... including the coaches. So here's the rub. Ryan is made for how we want to do it these days. He has closing speed, he is more than prepared to be physical ... and ... everyone else is now on the same page.

It might not be this week, maybe not even next week or the week after but y'all should prepare yourselves for the Gardner's return ... right about harvest time.

We play the Crows twice this regular season.....for the second time in Round 14...barely half way thru. There are a lot of learnings to be had in these 2 clashes. Their forward line is our kryptonite based on last season. We then have 10 games to find the answer ... 2 battles but the war comes September

And knowing how dudded we get via fixture effects, Thilthorpe, Rankine and Worrell will probably have season-ending injuries in Round 15.

My dad went to the game on Saturday and told me that Buku was going for marks one handed?? I didn't notice since the pub internet was dodgy and the broadcast was constantly freezing :(

Yes he's right. Buku was going for one-handed marks with his marking hand clenched.

I didn't see him hang on to any though. Most of them seemed to go out of bounds.

Like Gardner before him, I doubt this is something Buku decided to punch when he got out of bed that morning. It's a coaching directive & it's going well so far .

Buku's spoil when the ball was on its way to Stringer's chest was next level. Haven't seen a spoil like it since (dare I say it?) the legendary Dale Morris

All 3 of Thilthorpe, Fogarty and Tex are really good kicks for goal as well. So while you may not be able to stop them getting the ball the next best thing is making them take marks in tough areas.

Time on Ground for Adelaide's 3 KPFs were:
  • Thilthorpe - 89%, which also included a small amount of centre bounce attendances
  • Walker - 80%
  • Fogarty - 76%
  • Total - 245%
Compared to our 3 KPDs which were:
  • Lobb - 94%
  • Buku - 94%
  • JOD - 82%
  • Total - 270%
So there will most likely be a lot of game time where they only have the two talls up front and we have one of our defenders playing more of an intercept role. The structure and matchups when they're all on the ground will be very interesting though and might have English pushing behind the ball a bit more.

Bad memories of Adelaide Oval. Only been twice rained heavily both times. Had seats in the open ended up moving to standing room under cover. Played the crows first time and only kicked 2 goals for the match. The other time was the first gather round in 24 and lost to Port. Not going Friday night hoping for a win for the first time against the crows.
