Changes v Geelong

I don't go in these threads but;

Out: Hunter (forever), Prudden, Talia
In: Crameri, Dale, Webb

If Roughead is fit, he comes in for someone too.

Minson and Nicholls stats will look pretty similar but I think Nicholls was much better and Minson didn't get around the ground too well. Against Geelong at skilled with Blicavs being so mobile ( I know they play Simpson too), I would bring in Roughy for Minson and play him as first ruck, with Boyd giving him a chop out. We still have Redpath, Stringer and Crameri as fwd targets and it just makes us a lot more mobile and harder to match up on. Roughy will kill Simpson around the ground and give us an advantage there.

In: Roughy, Dale, Crameri

Out: Stevens, Minson, Prudden

If Hamling is ready then he comes in for Talia. I know making so many changes probably isn't ideal, but will help keep us fresh after Cairns as well as making the team better.

Surely Hamling comes in if fit, coming from the Cats, will know all about their forwards and how to play them. With his improvement this year, will be handy if fit. Weather forecast will be important though i suspect. Roughy in, Boyd out and try Roughy down forward might be a goer.

I'm wondering if they'll be able to fly Stevens straight back with a damaged lung. They certainly wouldn't if it was a puncture.
He might be stranded in Cairns for a few days - it's too far to drive or take the train.

Minson stays for mine. I have actually advocated dropping Minson in the past but Geelong are woeful at the clearances. Goldstein demolished both Simpson and Blicavs and Minson is a similar ish type if not the same class as Goldy. Minson stays to bash and crash Geelong like he did to Mummy at GWS. Without knowing the injury situation of Roughy and Hamling its hard to pick a team at the moment.

Very tough team selection this week, Roughead and hamling deserve to come in if fit but who goes out thought Talia was decent especially when thrown forward, not sure about the Minson dropping thought he was solid too just need cohesion with our mids and his taps.
Would leave Jong for another week let him put a couple together in the vfl, Webb and dale would have to be a chance to replace koby if he misses.
Maybe Boyd gets a spell in the twos for some confidence

Would really like Toyd to play a couple of games in the VFL to get some confidence and touch. Crameri's mature body will be needed, especially if Koby misses.
In: Crammers, Dale, Rough, Hamling
Out: Stevens, Prudden, Hunter, Talia

Watch a lot of the North v Cats game.

If we can recover well this week make a few changes and are relatively fresh there is no reason we can't beat them.

Hawkins will be the deciding factor. If our team defence can contain him, we go a long way to winning. If he gets off the leash, it will be a tough night.

On that note:

If Boyd is sore and Roughead is ready, perhaps a swap there.

Stevens out for Crameri.

I don't like to drop a kid after one game, but if Hamling is right he has earned an immediate recall for Prudden. Gives us good flexibility too.

Also wouldn't be against Hunter for Dale/Jong, but doubt he gets dropped again after 1 match.

I've been as big a fan of Morris as anyone but I'm not sure what his role is anymore. Wood, JJ, Boyd and Murphy take the small/mid size forwards. Roberts and Hamling are taking the talls, with Roughead and Talia options as well I'm not sure what type of player Morris plays on given he's lost a lot pace and agility.

Another issue is when Morris gets the ball it stops any momentum, which wasn't an issue in the past because of how good he was defensively.

How demanding would the Cairns trip have been? Have any of the younger players been pencilled in for a week off?

If Stevens isn't playing then I'd like to see Jong or Crameri come in because they are a similar body type (rather than say Dale). I'd lean to Crameri and let Jong show he can do it again in the VFL, but a firing Jong (as in the first few rounds before he broke his hand) is a real weapon for us.

It will be handy to have someone who can counter the mobility and athleticism of Blicavs ... Hamling maybe?

Difficult call on who goes out - maybe one of Prudden and Hunter, along with Talia. All three have just been called up to the seniors - I don't really like bringing players in for just one game and then dropping them, but we probably have to do it this week.
And then maybe there's someone suffering "general soreness" or Cairns fatigue who can do with a break. But even that may leave no room for Webb or Dale if we want to bring Roughy back as well. Nice position to be in!

Would like to see the Redpath and Toyd thing continue. Toyd will have his day, and he does do his rucking part as well. Redpath starting to fit in, partly to Boyd being there. Would like Crameri back in for Dickson. Bit hard to drop dickson with the season he has had, but I would like to see them three as our forward pack, with Dalh and stringer picking up the crumbs. Thats what I see as our forwards for the future, and if all firing it will be a formidable forward line. As for mids, our choices are too many, I really don't know who to pick. Would probably go the way we have been going and keep the rotations happening just to keep the guys fresh come FINALS TIME.... when we are there! I'd consider bringing Roughie in down back against Geelong for a bit of height as they have a few tall guys up forward. Selections are getting harder and harder. Everyone plays crap at the same time, or they play great at the same time.

Will wait for the injury report before listing changes as it has quite a bearing on how we line up this week - the fitness of Hamling, Roughead and Stevens in particular is relevant.

I wouldn't be making too many changes after last night though. We played poorly in the first half because we were hopeless as an entire unit, not because of the poor input of one or two players. What's clear though is that we need more movement up forward, and as such one or both of Crameri/Dale should find their way into the side. I actually really liked what Talia showed forward - if Hamling's ok and Geelong don't bring back the likes of Kersten, I wouldn't mind seeing us try it again. Toyd looks like he needs a bit of a spell to gain some confidence in his marking and Roughead would be an alright replacement if fit. His game wasn't awful last night (in fact I was impressed by greater ferocity on defence and his ability to generate some space on his defender), but doubts look to be creeping in. Give him a chance to reboot, refocus on his marking technique and build a bit of form in the VFL.

Also think Prudden deserves another week but I'm far from convinced. Clearly has a great footy brain but not sure his game is complete enough. He was awful and clearly nervous in the first quarter, worked his way into the second with some nice marks and disposals, and then was barely seen again (I think two disposals after half time?). Deserves another go.

Hunter also deserves another go. Was furious with him early, but worked his way into it and played a nice role for us. Still a lot to work on, and I'm still not convinced, but happy for him to get another chance to play some consistent footy.

You can guarantee it will be wet, cold and miserable next week. As such would like Crameri and Stringer to play as mids and Minson will be essential. Boyd is essential for our forward line, his tackling and pressure is very good and he is not a bad second ruck. Roughead can play on Hawkins, we simply have no one else.

The thing is everyone missed marks. The ball was obviously slippery - both sides had difficulty getting purchase on it in general play if there was any pressure. While Toyd missed some marks they were no worse than Stringer's or Redpath's.

He's just had a break and been brought back. Many of us noted how much we missed his presence against Carlton, so to drop him this week seems like an overreaction. If he's fumbly and lacks confidence again next week then perhaps I'll agree he needs a spell in the twos, but not yet.

He's our best defender. Why would you drop him?

He's definitely not the best defender and I wouldn't be dropping him yet, but he's not adding a lot to the backline currently and he's obviously not going to around much longer.

Yes he's our best one on one defender, he shuts them down. Last night he was really important.

Also, normally second week back is an issue more so, Gaz struggled this week more than last. After Cats' 20 day break, this week will no doubt be abit tougher than most to get up from. Could be out of run next week by 3 qtr time. Just hope the heat and humidity doesn't provide us the same issues from last night.

Was a bruised lung, will effect his breathing for a couple of days and might cause him to miss this week but he'll be back for the Collingwood match.
