Changes v Geelong

Yeah I'd probably make one change and that'd be Stevens out for Crameri. I'd try Talia forward a bit too and put Boyd in a the ruck a little more.

I really want to see more of Hunter and Prudden before sending them back to the 2s.

So would you leave out Hamling and Roughy if they are both fit?

I've been as big a fan of Morris as anyone but I'm not sure what his role is anymore. Wood, JJ, Boyd and Murphy take the small/mid size forwards. Roberts and Hamling are taking the talls, with Roughead and Talia options as well I'm not sure what type of player Morris plays on given he's lost a lot pace and agility.

Another issue is when Morris gets the ball it stops any momentum, which wasn't an issue in the past because of how good he was defensively.

Pretty similar to my thoughts as well. I really really want the Roberts, Talia, Hamling setup to be given an extended stint at senior level and I like how all of them can play forward as well. Talia has the worst first half I've probably seen in some time but he held his head up high and snagged a couple and presented a target. Its time for that defensive combination to be implemented. Roughead main ruck and Boyd FF/2nd ruck.

Also think Prudden deserves another week but I'm far from convinced. Clearly has a great footy brain but not sure his game is complete enough. He was awful and clearly nervous in the first quarter, worked his way into the second with some nice marks and disposals, and then was barely seen again (I think two disposals after half time?). Deserves another go.
To be fair on Prudden, The game was played almost exclusively in our forward half for most of the second half of the game. As a backman, couldn't see him having much opportunity.
I think by his third game he will be really hitting his straps, (assuming he gets those games)

To a degree (although heat map data indicates that the ball was still in our defensive half for 36% of the third quarter and 47% of the fourth quarter, so not that dramatic), but he still had significantly less impact than any other defender in that period for mine. He needs to find a way to get himself more involved more consistently, as he did in the second quarter. As I said though, he showed enough to convince me that he has some tricks and deserves more time to prove himself.

He's definitely not the best defender and I wouldn't be dropping him yet, but he's not adding a lot to the backline currently and he's obviously not going to around much longer.

He's still our best defender

I'd probably leave Hammer out for now, you're right about Roughy though. He is pretty important, not sure who comes out. If Roughy was up for some hard ruck minutes I'd say Minson but I don't think he's up to it yet.

The betting has the cats clear favourites I would have thought at worst it would be 50/50 given the cats have lost the last 2 and we have won our last 4. If it was at Etihad we would be have been short favourites.

Just about to write that. $2.55 for the win, definitely some value there. It's not like they are playing well down at Simonds this year anyway.

Hard to believe really, I think Selwood will be missing as well. Get on it if that's your thing.

For me:

Ins: Crameri, Hamling

Outs: Stevens, Prudden

The other consideration was Dale in for C Daniel.

What did you boys think of CD last night. I thought he was pretty good, linked up well. Dale would be more of a quicker, outside option.

Prudden was okay. But pretty slow. He's as slow as Macrae without the tricks. Hamling would offer more as a defender.

Also, normally second week back is an issue more so, Gaz struggled this week more than last. After Cats' 20 day break, this week will no doubt be abit tougher than most to get up from. Could be out of run next week by 3 qtr time. Just hope the heat and humidity doesn't provide us the same issues from last night.
Spot on, which is why we can't use the coming back from Cairns and humid conditions excuse here. 2nd up after a 20 day break will be as tough as what we'll be trying to achieve, especially when most other clubs have got another game or 2 of conditioning in their legs.

Geelong are on the ropes with their best player by a country mile likely to be rubbed out. This is at worst a 50/50 game and honestly the lads should be as confident in this as they've been against everyone else over the last month. This is a more than winnable game and one we should be expecting to win if we play the footy that we've playing for most of the year.

I actually thought he looked pretty good leading at the ball. Looked comfortable down there. It's not a bad plan b to have up our sleeve.
We are looking for a CHF (well Redpath might be slowly fixing that hole), Talia has great mits, a big tank and looks like he has a decent set shot on him...

Outs

Prudden - sorry prudden lovers doesn't fit in our side currently and I doubt he will at any stage.
Hunter - Don't rate and dont want.
Minson - Want Roughy as main ruck and Boyd as 2nd ruck. Not worried about Dawson simpson at all so happy to play roughy as main ruck. Tom Boyd has to play 2nd ruck if he continues to give poor output.
Stevens - injury so we can give him a week off and then bring him back in.

Ins

Crameri
Dale
Roughead
Jong

Hamling very stiff, really want to get him in and see Roberts, Talia and Hamling as the KPDs. Not sure where that would leave Moz though.

Minson is our best ruck by the length of the Flemington straight and was excellent as the game wore on last night. I'm shocked at calls to drop him.

You would think Jong and Crameri would be the obvious replacements for Stevens and Prudden. Not exactly sure how Roughy gets in at the moment. At this stage Redpath is offering much more as a forward and Boyd's ruck work is more than reasonable for a second stringer. Only gets in if you drop T.Boyd, which as we seen the week previous affects our structure too much.

Hunter was okay last night, needs to stay in for mine.

I think Minson should only be picked when we are playing the beast rucks Sandilands/Mumford/Goldy etc, I want the Roughead/Boyd combination to come into effect. Redpath more than truly deserves an extended go and Boydy is vital for tall structure. Roughead is an absolute lock so unfortunately will makes way.

I'd also like the Roberts, Talia, Hamling combination to be used as of this week but we know Morris won't be dropped (nor is it fair if he was) but the other 3 have height and versatility. Geelong always go tall in the forward line as well. Hawkins/Walker/Blicavs so we are going to need a range of talls.

Valid point, but I'm just not sure there's that big a gap in regards to versatility and mobility when comparing Minson and Roughy. Minson IMO still runs out a game far better than any other ruckman we've got, and still is comfortably our best ruckman either way you look at it. Roughy has a great leap and has attributes for that role that no doubt show promise, however whilst he is an important player no doubt, he's some way off being a lock as a first choice ruckman.

Agree the defensive side of things, their main weapon against us previously has been their big guys who we need to collar with Roberts, Talia etc. I dare say Moz will play small which perhaps allow's us o use Murph, JJ and Wood a little further up the ground at times.

When you mean versatility surely you mean Roughy has far more than Minson does. Minson cannot play any other role anywhere across the park. Roughy can play defence and also in the forward line. Minson has endurance but his movement is pretty poor. He gets by on power. Bev is huge on versatility and Minson and Morris are probably the 2 who can't play another position. We need to phase both out of the best 22 (i'd keep Morris on the list next season as depth) but we need to pick players who are talented at more than one position and both unfortunately aren't.

I'm looking forward to when Roughy plays 70% ruck and Boydy the other 30%. Thats the way we should go now and into the future. Both are only going to get better with more preseasons and experience in those positions.

Ideally, I think having Roughy as the full time ruck in the future is the ideal scenario. My point is that I'm not sure Roughy is quite as athletic as many think he is (he's hardly the QE2 but you get my drift).

Right now I think Minson is still comfortably our best ruckman and I just don't see the sense in not playing him.

If Roughy comes in for another role as a chop out and or to play at either end then that's fine but right now I think it would be a terrible call to drop Minson for Roughy. Ultimately we want Roughy to graduate to that first ruck role but for the moment for a side that looks like a genuine finals contender it wouldn't make much sense to drop a big catalyst in your side and still your number 1 big man for a guy clearly battling some niggles and who the jury is still out on in regards to his ruck work.

I agree with what your saying, I just think you've pulled the trigger 1-2 years too soon.
