Preview Changes v North Melbourne

Selwood is a lot better than a heap of people on here make him out to be - as long as he's not playing on one of the opposition's quickest players that is...

Happy with the team, that's the best side we've fielded in I don't know how long...

I really like these changes.

At first I was concerned about Brown being dropped because I thought he was a good match up for Daw but then I realised a tall kicking 6+ against the Dogs isn't a rare thing.

This is actually our best team in paper for a while but so many guys are still not 100% match fit. By my reasoning, LeCras, Wellingham, Rosa, Kerr, Naitanui, Waters and Sheppard are either carrying injuries or are just coming back.

I'm not really sure of Norths situation but the closeness of their losses has been impressive and the early draw has done them no favours.

True about A. Selwood. In the past he has played well on Boomer Harvey. I'd suggest he'll get that role again.

I think the forecast is for rain on friday in Perth, perhaps why WCE have ommited a tall

Well Brown would be packing his bags right about now, shame that we keep a shit spud on his last legs in A Selwood and a future talented defender in Brown will likely walk and I don't blame him one bit if he does because we've treated him like shit.

Whoosha has got to stop selecting friends over better younger players.

You know whats happened here. Whoosh would have a better relationship with the older playing group. that's why A Selwood and Embley will get the nod but cost us in the long run.

Time will tell but we are gonna pay for these mistakes and the blame should fall solely on the coach for this.
With any luck it's just for his brother's milestone game.

We cant keep playing 4 talls in the back half and i think Adam selwood is good for an extra mid rotation.

Playing the 4 tall defender really depends on match ups. I think it is possible with some teams and not with others. North play with 3 talls (Petrie, Daw & Black) and their other forwards tend to be quick smalls rather than mid sized players (Thomas, Harvey, Adams and rotating mids). North have picked Hansen but he played in the defence last week but could always play forward, making it four talls.

Brown is very unlucky. I thought he would have been the best match up for Daw. He is an emergency so he is still a chance of playing.

Waters plays a vastly different role to Smith and Brennan.
And a vastly different role to Brown too?
And "vastly different" is a stretch, especially with Brennan. They are both expected to play rebounding/zoning off roles with levels of accountability that depend on the matchup, among other things. Neither are lockdown defenders, and both thrive in being able to help out teammates at a contest and rebound. If anything they are each the most similar player in our squad to the other, and a swap of the two makes the most sense.

No he really isn't.

He was, but is no longer. I would rather Brown despite the size, or even Hutchings as an extra midfield rotation than Selwood.

Firstly, we aren't always playing 4 talls in the back half. Schofield has spent a fair chunk of time up the ground on a HFF, and has actually been pretty effective there marking on the lead and delivering very well to our forwards inside 50.
Secondly, while Schofield is tall he isn't restricted by the attributes that make playing tall players a dicey proposition. He isn't slow or unwieldy, he has good skills and ability at ground level and he can play on players smaller than him. Geelong won premierships with Scarlett, Taylor, Harley and Mackie all running around, because Mackie, like Schofield, wasn't just a tall.

Honestly I really like the "4 talls" system. Having Schofield in addition to the other 3 means we never have the Brennan/Hurn/Smith vs a tall matchups that come with injuries or giving defenders a spell on the bench., and similarly it keeps the opposition honest at the other end when forwards get rested/injured, or when the opposition decides they want to put a tall on LeCras/Hill, a strategy that has worked well for them in the past.

Surprised we decided to drop Brown against North with 4 x tall forward options but kept him against Brisbane with ummm, Brown, in the wet. I really hope we don't play Adam Selwood on Lindsay Thomas.

Waters, Masten & Kerr for Smith, Hutchings & Dalziell are logical changes. Gaff will surely come under pressure soon of Dalziell goes back and racks up big numbers for the Sharks.

Great looking team on paper. Brennan & ASelwood look like the weak links. Who's else is missing from our best 22?

A.Selwood probably our best small defender at this stage... *hides*

Is anyone doing better? Brennan, Smith, Butler??
What's the point of a small defender if he is slow as molasses? The only reason you would need a small defender is to play on those small quick forwards, and for that speed is the important attribute, not height. Hell, think back to the days of Fletcher completely towling up Phil Matera every time we played the Bombers. Just because a forward is short doesn't mean he needs a short opponent.

What does A Selwood even have going for him?

He's small, he's slow, his kicking is terrible, his mark is average.

The only thing I can think of is he has experience but that means **** all if you're crap.
Got to pull you up on that one PA, his marking under a high ball is fantastic, not many more courageous than him, other than that, continue on......

Was really happy with Kerr, Masten, Waters in for Smith, Hutchings and Razzle Dazzle.

But then saw A Selwood in and Mitch Brown out and had a double cringe.

Why in gods name is Selwood back in the side? What has he proven this year other than he has sloth like pace and should retire. Man those pics he has of the MC must be pretty damn good.

And Brown, has played extremely well over the last few weeks and I thought was cementing his place in the side. But no out again at the first chance regardless of how he or others have been playing. Best of luck back in Melbourne Mitch!

I got to pull you up on that one Swannies, IMO it hasn't been for a while now. I agree he used to and he still backs back but he often drops them or fumbles them now.
