Smith splits his time between the HBF and the Wing. Both are outside midfielder positions. He's had 13 scoring shots to Mackay's 12 this year. I'd say it's not unfair to include him in the conversation.
Um what Smith has been a defender all year. Try tuning in mate.

This analysis has also uncovered that Seedsman and Cameron are by far the best defensive players out of our 'outside' guys. Seedsman in particular has a relatively high pressure act and tackle count for his contested possession figure. So this indicates he gets it on the outside, but applies good pressure when he has players near him.

Henderson is comparatively awful. Higher contested possessions, but much lower tackles and pressure acts.
Best at converting pressure acts into effective tackles. Not sure that's the same thing as saying they're the best defensive players. Mackay definitely has a place at the table at that discussion, given his very high number of "pressure acts".

Agree that Hendo, Atkins and Smith are all poor defensively - particularly when compared to the other three.

Given his hit rate, I'd rather he wasn't one of our designated kickers...

Right.. so he gets the ball as we're slingshotting out of defence. You know, as we're moving it through the midfield?

Given the 2-way running, and the regularity with which we see all 36 players in one half of the ground, the difference between a HBF and a wingman is negligible at best.

This is absolutely incorrect. We use a TEAM DEFENCE. One aspect of this is that we rotate 7 players through our defence (the 7th player is usually sitting on his bum). The six defenders primary role is to defend against the oppositions forwards (sometimes 5 forwards if they are playing an extra man in defence, sometimes six forwards). If the ball stops in our D50 (called a stoppage) then we will have our ruckman, our 3 inside mids and our two outside mids/wingmen in the D50. Our forwards move up between the D50 and F50 (this doesn't make them midfielders ).

If there is a stoppage between the F50 and the D50 our six defenders (which would include number 33) remain in the D50. Our inside mids, ruckman and outside mids are at the stoppage. Two or more of our forwards also moved up towards the stoppage (this doesn't make them midfielders).

If there is a stoppage inside our F50 then our defenders move between the centre and the F50. This doesn't make Talia or Brodie Smith a midfielder. Our outside mids also stay half a kick out of the F50 but our inside mids go into the stoppage.

No I meant that in a number of ways:
  • Seedsman is 4th best for pressure acts per tackle. Above him are both Crouches and Thompson. Cameron is 6th. Mackay 16th. Henderson 25th. Smith 19th. In other words, most of Seedsman's pressure is in the form of tackles.
  • Seedsman is 1st for contested possessions per tackle. Cameron is 2nd. Mackay 7th. Smith 15th. Henderson 25th. In other words, Seedsman tackles a lot for someone who plays mostly on the outside.
  • Seedsman is 2nd for pressure acts per contested possessions. Mackay 3rd. Cameron 5th. Smith 9th. Henderson 15th. In other words, he applies a lot of pressure for someone who plays mostly on the outside.
Seedsman is also the least contested player in our entire team, with 24.4% contested possessions. He sits in a group at the bottom, along with Smith and Henderson.

Mackay is the 17th most contested player, with a similar rating to Laird, Milera and Atkins.

The most contested players are, in order: Sloane, Betts, Lyons, Jenkins, B. Crouch, M. Crouch, Cameron, Thompson, McGovern and Walker.

Good post... But note at times in games this year, Smith has lined up on a wing. I would estimate 10% of the time. Happened in games where we have been missing an outside mid, he becomes part of the rotations.

Looking at those stats, I can see why Brodie Smith was named on the bench last week.
K: 13.3 (3 more than Mackay)
HB: 7.6 (1 less than Mackay)
T: 2.3 (2 less than Mackay)
G: 0.2 (same as Mackay)

Considering his reputation, his goal kicking has been absolutely awful. Mackay's hasn't been great either, but he doesn't have Smith's reputation.

Probably not unfair to include him in the same discussion as Seedsman, Mackay and Henderson. He really shouldn't be a part of that discussion (based on his talent & ability), but his form in 2016 definitely warrants it.

What's the relevance with Smith being named on the bench?

Official changes are in

Out:
Jacobs (ankle), Thompson (rested), McGovern (rested)
In: O'Brien, CEY, Walker

McGovern out! How does that happen after he kicks 4!?
All like for like & gather we are managing the gov. May be sore after a busy game last week. He'll be back soon.

Hmm, McGovern rested. Makes a little sense, I guess.

CEY in is good, shame Wigg can't get a go. Walker back also good.
