Disagree with the above poster who said Mara wasn't best on, in my view he and Schache could have raffled BOG, with JJ not too far behind. I watched at least 3 quarters and felt I didn't miss too much. There was a reason Schache ended up with 3 himself, the Willy defenders were so pre-occupied in trying to defend Mara they basically ignored a host of our other forwards. Mara competed well all day and just caused headaches. His pressure around the ball was decent if not a little clumsy with his tackling / bump attempts but you couldn't ask much more from a key forward. Bedendo was great in patches, Wally was solid, but in my eyes it was Mara and Schache that were 1-2 in the votes.

I had Schache, Wallis, and Sullivan all ahead of JUH. Doesn’t mean I thought JUH wasn’t very good, he was great, I just think the coaches will still see his deficiencies. He’s teammates were constantly at him to work and chase and he was gassed a lot of the time. He looks a lot stronger finally and is really close. I’m up for him coming in if it’s for Buku but not if it’s for Sweet and he’s expected to be the number 2 to Naughton. I just don’t think he’s ready for that role yet.
Interesting comment re Schache, I thought Marra benefited from Schache and Cordy not the other way around. Either way it worked well for all of them. Willi were without their 2 best KPD and the next went off injured at half time.

Why would you play a slow tap only ruckman against a smaller quier more agile opponent who racks up the pill when you have your 1st choice being 10cm taller then his opponent with the same attributes?

Because if you can dominate the ruck and tap it to your mids and then get it to the tallest guy on the field sitting in the fwd pocket, it will go a long way to winning the game.

Its been proven that if Naughton is held we struggle. Why risk it?

Of the AFL listed boys, I thought Wallis and Schache did well. Bedendo has also had a good couple of weeks now. Issue for Wallis though is he was playing largely midfield which isn't of any use in seniors.

In saying that, I missed large chunks of last week's game so others may have a better idea. Testekill watches most games I think?

Agree Schache and Wallis we’re good, Schache started really poorly and worked into it. He was getting thrashed in the ruck though but his ability to hit the scoreboard was important. Wally very influential too around the ball - like you said though that doesn’t translate to where he plays in the seniors.

I’d have JUH best on out of all of them though, 8 shots on goal and he was only credited with 1 CM but I think that’s a bit harsh, should have been at least 3 from memory. Either way 6 goals, 15 odd disposals and really good pressure and follow up work for 4 qtrs clearly the most influential on the ground imo.

From the presser I’d say Sweet is definitely out, I’d hate to see us revert to no 2nd ruck and expect mids to pick up the slack once again, forgetting about the opponent I’d like to just see us settle into a good sustainable line up which can work week to week. If we bring in Cordy or Schache then Schache should get the nod as he can actually play forward and Cordy was pretty piss poor on the weekend. But in saying that we’ve seen Schache time and time again fail at the level so I’m not sure this time would be any different.

People are quick to say Geelongs rucks are shit but it was only a couple of weeks ago Stanley & Blicavs had 30 touches, 40+ HO, 6 contested marks and 4 goals between them. I actually think it’s the wrong strategy to think because they’re not good traditional “ruckmen” we can play non-ruckman against them - it actually should be the opposite IMO, playing Dunks, Buku, Bont etc against them means we’re playing into their strengths - and letting them off the hook with their weaknesses, in the ruck contests, which they will win against those guys, and then they can still provide their usual strengths which is around the ground.

We should be playing English & Sweet so we can take advantage of their weakness in the ruck and guarantee we get first use all day. Blicavs especially is a huge aerobic beast and won’t get worked over from English like others do, plus we’ll be expecting him to then ruck 95% of the day whilst Stanley & Blicavs can work him over - eliminating his strengths in the process.

Listening to Bevo presser now, might have misread things but i'd be nearly certain Sweet gets dropped this week. Bevo talked up Sweety for the job he did when he rucked the 2 games prior to the eagles, but said his role last week was only pinch hitting ruck with some time forward. I'd put my money on his omission. Mara likely another week in the 2s as well.

Thought the same thing, problem is English is number 1 ruck but also number 1 2nd or 3rd tall in forward line (or number 1 most awkward opponent each week)

I still maintain that our best side is probably English as a second ruck especially against the big boys like Gawn however Sweet and Martin don’t dominate enough around the ground when given the chance so we go back to English as ruck plus Cordy or whoever can play a better forward role

He's a lot better than his Dad, great prospect. Went to a game once with my Uncle, early 80's. Stood near the players race and the ball came near there and Terry dropped a sitter. We were getting absolutely pumped and my Uncle was not happy and 3/4 pissed. He yelled out "De Koning, you fairy." Reckon Terry heard it (very small crowd) and looked our way with half a grin on his face.

We had a few players like that back then, I remember being behind the goals at the Drill Hall end and watching John Taylor go for a mark in the goal square and the ball went between his outstretched hands and bounced off his head.

It’s staggering how many times Beveridge keeps going back to the small side well, I’m still waiting to see the advantage it gives the team. He’s more than happy to play multiple small role players so it’s not simply a talent issue.
