Cheney or Murphy, who would you have?

Murphy by a long way.

Nothing against Cheney but Murphy is a very good defender who just needs confidence. That said as we move forward this year there is an argument over our lack of tall defenders and I'd have no angst about Murphy being displaced by a Lisle or Schoemakers if he starts to get beaten on regular occasions.

I'd take either, but in terms of being more attacking, it would be Cheney. For mine, Murphy, too much immediately looks sideways or backwards, which is silly, mainly because he is quite effective by foot.

But I think Murph has come on leaps and bounds this year! :thumbsu:

By the looks of things everyone has chosen murphy but against collingwood i think you have top be bold and take the game on from half back. I just think like someone mentioned before murphy looks backwards and sideways too much, and put gibbo on cloke lisle on dawes and everyone else is mid to small sized in their forward line.

Like i said in op i dont mind either and this is not a murphy bashing exercise.

I think most would chose Cheney for his attacking attributes (if that is what is required) but I think most believe we need Murphy to shore up the backline. I don't think they are competing directly for the same spot with Gilham and stratton both out. If they were in full fitness, I'd have cheney in the team ahead of Murphy for the reason you have said.

Given Murphy is one of our most important defenders and surely one of the first picked by the Match committee on Thursdays - you'd probably have to go with him.

FFS

Cheney has shown a lot of heart and has been very servicable but has Murphy been beaten in the last 12 months? If anythin it is pop v chenney and it is quite clear who wins this. I love Cheney and think he deserves a go but maybe he would have been better off going to another developing club becuase it is hard to see how he would get a game

Puopolo, Shoey, Guerra, Birchal, Gibson, Suckling and Murphy would be our 7 starting defenders by the end of the year

Well interesting...I'd have the Birch and Gibbo with the GOO and the POO as automatics in the back 6, that leaves a tall in Lisle (preferred at this stage for mine) or Schoe then a true negator Cheney or Murphy.

So for given that GOO and POO can play small better than than Cheney and Murphy, its comes down to who plays better taller out of Cheney and Murphy and I'd lean towards Cheney.

Who cares its our opinion...only matters the the coaching staff think Im guessing.

But to lose our Key backs for most of the year and having this discussion is great coz that = depth and thats just a beautiful thing.

Whoever plays will play a role and be backed in so its all good:thumbsu:

Well it depends what as. As a chauffer, Murphy, is slim and has the height. As a competitor in a Ronald McDonald look-a-like competition, Cheney, obviously. As net bowlers, both. As premiership defenders....neither.

If Cheney was recruited to fill the void left by Brown, then why did we recruit Puopolo?

Murphy is a terrible footballer. Don't know how Cheney gets a game. So, neither.

Prepare for the meltdown;)

I forgot Suckling out of my list so I'd have him infront of both...by a freaking mile...depth is still nice though:thumbsu:

Murphy. He is an adept shut down small-med defender with a greater understanding of our defensive structures through his time in our system.

I believe Cheney is of similar quality, but Murphy presents more a known quantity, which generally will give him the benefit of the doubt unless Cheney's form is significantly better than his.

Their form this year is somewhat similar so for me Murphy would get the nod.

Smurf. He's had a ripper couple of years, has worked hard and gives his all for the club. Cheney still has a ways to go working in and with the team.

Murphy will become a very serviceable 150 game player for the Hawthorn footy club. He has done he's job surperbly over the last 2 seasons. Like most players of he's type by the time he reaches 28 and loses a yard he will probably be overtaken quite quickly by younger players but thats still 3 or 4 years away.

Cheney all things being equal will not play more then 30 games for the hawks.
He doesn't have the defensive qualities of Murphy Puopolo and Gibson who will play on the mediums and smalls all things being equal and he doesn't have the attacking flair of Suckling, Guerra or Birchall.

Murphy.

Murphy has been really good, both last year and this. Rarely beaten and can play on smalls as well as players a lot taller. Would still like to see attitude in his game.

Cheney has played a couple of games and has been sub-par at times, but improving in his last couple of games to be pretty good. I haven't seen the mongrel in him that I thought he was supposed to have. Would like to see this added to the agenda.

Can see room for both these players in the team, but probably not this year. Both could do with more mongrel.

I think Cheney has more upside...Murph has been fantastic this year though

Just to clarify: Cheney is good at reading the ball in-flight and has a great spoil and appears a lot cooler under pressure

I like Cheney's attack on the ball. He really goes hard at it, whilst Tom has a more laconic pressure. Flip of a coin, but whoever we chose shouldn't affect the side too much.

I wouldn't have either in my best 6 at the moment. Cheney is still developing but looks like he has a future and whilst I am not a huge Murphy fan, I thought he was pretty good last year, but IMHO has dropped off a bit this year.

For mine:

FB: Puopolo - Lisle - Guerra
HB: Burgers - Gibbo - Birchall

Personally I think Scape goat numero uno has more to offer than potential scape goat number 2. Unfortunate for scape goat number 1 that he gained his spot in the side during our epic fail 18month period when our expectations as "fans" (not sure some on here qualify) far outweighed our ability. We had seriously good players a) retired b) Injured in the stands c) Injured but still on the field. Scape goat number 1 was played out of position and was soundly beaten. surprise surprise... S Silvagni would have struggled the way the ball was coming in against us in 2009.

In closing I really like scape goat number 1 as he says a giant F***YOU to all "supporters" who constantly bag him. I join him in saying F***you to the haters. He has the support of the coaches and I seriously doubt he gives a fat rats tossbag about what is yelled at him from the outer.

I LOVE YOU SCAPEGOAT NUMBER 1:heart:

I agree. If Stratton and Gilham were available they would be even further down the pecking order.
Having said that, both players have played very well this year when I have had the chance to watch. Both are very good depth players but not automatic selections if we ever have a full list from which to choose.

Also agree CLA. Surely people recognise we cannot afford ball-breakingly stupid mistakes under pressure (& elsewhere); turnovers are public enemy number 1. Both players are reasonable depth, with Murphy, a loyal servant, & Cheney, an enthusiastic newcomer ... but we have better - or we better get it.
