Could some teams do with a bit of re-branding?

North Melbourne is a suburb though.

The others are regions of somewhere - one of Melbourne, the other of sydney (Canberra is a region of sydney to apparently), and one of the country.

Why not. The Sydney Swans claim Melbourne. Hawthorn claim Tassie

Does anyone even use the moniker 'Power' anyway?

I can't remember the last time I heard someone mention Port in conversation as anything other than Port or Port Adelaide.

I always figured since they couldn't be the Magpies and the AFL wanted them to have something more than Port Adelaide Football Club they chose a name that wasn't specific so that people wouldn't lose the PA/Magpie association. If they'd come in as the Sharks or Bank Barrel Murderers or whatever then I think the One Club thing would've been harder.

Sydney "claims" South Melbourne because of their 100+ year history in the city.

FWIW, I feel like Footscray is better as a name than "Western Bulldogs", and it hardly hurt their VFL side. But it's not my club or my decision. I just know I'd rather not see "Southern Saints" on a team sheet any time soon.

So? They are supposedly for all of Sydney now (well kinda. Someone needs to explain to them that Sydney doesnt end at Glebe) Both cities have a proud tradition of not liking each other very much. Yet they are proudly south or sydney depending on marketing.

If they were "all for Sydney" what is the SMFC doing on the neck of their jumper.

Being a Port Melbourne follower, I happen to know a fair few Swans fans from the time they were South Melbourne, as the two clubs have traditionally had a lot of supporters in common. It's a actually not that fine of a balancing act they have to do to keep both sets of supporters happy. Yes, Sydney and Melbourne are old rivals, but as long as the Swannies keep winning the fans I know really don't take that into consideration.

Sydney Giants.

Where is Greater Western?

Contrary to popular belief, Sydney doesn't end at the Anzac bridge, with a barren wasteland of poverty, drugs, and thunderdomes beyond it.

Piss off mate

Our colours are brown and gold. We've worn those colours for 100 years.
We don't care if other people don't like our colours. They're OURS.

You wanna talk about "rebranding"?

How about you look in your own backyard and do something about that ridiculous "Power" nickname, logo and crappy song

:rolleyes::thumbsu:

A grey fist holding a white lightning bolt? WTF????
I never understood why Port chose the nickname "Power" over the "Sharks"

Anyway, there is a whole board dedicated to this shit where Big Footy's budding fashion designers gather to discuss fashions and colour combinations and share make-up tips
Power, Sharks, Pirates etc, whatever we chose would have been ridiculed by some people. As long as Port Adelaide fans are happy with Power (and the majority are), that's all that matters.

And yet here we are in a thread started by a Power ridiculing other teams...

That's how I always read it. It's generic and forgettable enough to not overshadow the association with the PA Magpies.

As a result, everyone just calls them Port, which is what they wanted..

Here in SA, the term 'Port Power' seemed to be more common years ago, less so since their crash and resurgence. Meanwhile, someone has handily italicised the word 'power' within the club creed in Port's Wikipedia article o_O

Yeah 10-15 years ago I used to hear and use Port Power alot, never hear it anymore

Agree that Dockers is lame as hell, hence refer to Dockers as the Dockers when around Dockers fans

If I were running the show I'd subtly phase it out.

I think the teal (which has to stay anyway to prevent Victoria drowning in Eddie's tears) has become a big part of their AFL identity, but the lightning bolt and Power moniker haven't. Their home and away jumpers are excellent, they just need a new crest IMO.

Port Power sounds lame as ****, and I think Port fans hate it.

Funnily enough Freo's original branding centered around the 'Dockers' moniker and the green/purple/red anchor emblem which was eventually considered a strong, recognisable logo. The club wasn't allowed to use the word 'Dockers' after a legal challenge from Levi's (the company which makes Dockers brand clothes) and moved away from the word and focused on branding the club as 'Fremantle Football Club' with Dockers as an unofficial nickname. Levi's allowed the use of the term and it came back when 'the Steves' rebranded the club and introduced the chevrons.
