News Crows 5 Year Plan: AFL Premiership by 2027

I fully expect this side to play finals this year and given that, a premiership should be our aim in 2024.

Do you genuinely believe we are a chance to win the flag next year? Or are you setting high expectations so you can be angry when we don't reach them?

I’m never angry at failing to achieve something. I get angry that in the past we haven’t set goals aggressively enough. I absolutely hate the “Premiership window” crap, as it really is just an excuse by coaches to keep the media off their back. At least 10 sides this year should be going in with a genuine belief that they can win it this year.

btw I totally believe we can win the premiership next year. There is no side in this comp that we can’t beat with this squad If we play at our best. The problem is playing at that level often enough and having a good run with injuries. Both those things are up to the coaches really.

Hey - who knows.

Brisbane went from 5-17 in 2017 (Spoon) to 5-17 in 2018 (15th) to 16-6 in 2019 and 3 points away from a prelim. You better believe they thought they were a genuine shot at a flag in 2020.

One of the few things that I have in common with the Tools and Trolls is that we have not ruthlessly targeted premierships and have been content with always being “competitive” (until recent years).

We were not the Best Team in 1997 and 1998 and this clearly influenced our “make the Eight and anything can happen” approach.

Since the end of 2019 we have embarked on a total rebuild.
1) We have turned over most of our list

2) We have drafted a heap of youngsters (some good, some not so good) and we have a record (for us) of top 15 draft picks on our list

3) We have not traded in anyone over 25 years of age.

4) In the last 3 years we have player DOUBLE the AFL average for sub50 game players. We have played nearly 40% more Kids than the second team on this list (Essendon).

5) We have traded in two potentially elite players who will be with the club for many years.

This doesn’t mean we will win a flag in the next 5 years but you can’t argue that we are giving it a crack.
You’re the found member of FIGJAM though and you’re underselling what you have in common with tools and trolls

Didn't miss Kurt Tippett for a second. Easily replaced.

Yeah, he was a loss, but we had young potentially elite midfield talent too. Prime Thommo, Danger coming close to peak, and Sloane.

Any of those would be comfortably our best midfielder now.

Of course, the draft sanctions were a thing.

I'm not sure that team tells us much about this one.

Howd they compare for age and experience in that period though? How's it compare to us now?

Brisbane 2017 - 22.8 years (18th), 40.7 games (18th)
Brisbane 2018 - 23.4 years (16th), 54 games (15th)
Brisbane 2019 - 23.5 years (17th), 55.4 games (15th) - 3 points off a prelim
Brisbane 2020 - 23.8 years (15th), 55 games (15th) - made a prelim.

Adelaide 2021 - 23.6 years (18th), 54.2 games (16th)
Adelaide 2022 - 23.5 years (18th), 45.6 games (18th)
Adelaide 2023 - 23.8 years (17th), 51.7 games (17th).

And in 2013 - Thommo played 22 games, Sloane 21 games, Danger 20 games, Douglas 22 games, Vince 20 games and we went from 2nd on the ladder and being the 2nd highest scoring team in 2012 to the 11th best team and 9th highest scoring team.

Almost like losing all those forwards (Callinan, Tippett, Porps, Johncock) and Tex on an ACL really set us back and pushed us far away from flag contention.

I'm not sure that team tells us much about this one.

Its more a comment about how quickly things can change.

We’ve nailed our first rounders though

Unlucky.. Tex/Tippett were 1/3 of our goals in 2012 and a massive part of our success.

They underperformed. I thought that was widely recognised.

Yeah and Sando had his flaws. Who knows how it all goes down if Tippett doesn't leave.

I can guarantee you that Hawthorn don't win the flag if they lost Buddy/Roughead in 2013.

I wouldn't call the guy describing it as "Port Adelaide type self-flagellating" as wanting us to "Stop announcing things that always end up being pie in the sky rubbish" as happy with it.

Lol. There's a big difference between having an opinion, and being upset. Best you learn the difference, clown.

Do you genuinely believe we are a chance to win the flag next year? Or are you setting high expectations so you can be angry when we don't reach them?
Yup. In this modern day climate, you don't go from the absolute youngest squad, to a premiership squad in 2 years. There's at least a 4-5 year growth and experience period required.
