Don't think I'll ever understand how that was deemed as severe impact

The INJURY was severe, not the IMPACT; and the blurring of these two very distinct factors will always lead the tribunal to hand out incorrect or unjustifiable punishments.

It did seem like a clumsy action and probably justified a one week suspension, based solely on the action, NOT the outcome; but 3 weeks? Give me a spell.

Of course we all know that the system is inherently flawed, but it isn't changing, at least in the foreseeable future, and players, clubs and the public alike will have to continue copping poor calls like this one on the chin. Just one of the many holes the AFL are digging for themselves

AFL tribunal rules require the MRO and the appeals panel to take into account the outcome of the trip, including the injury sustained by the player offended against.

May not like it (it does lead to inconsistencies in interpretation of actions), but that's how the rules are framed.

The tribunal rules define careless conduct very broadly - basically if the MRO considers that Howe has breached his duty of care to Fisher, then at minimum it is careless conduct. The test is whether a reasonable player would not regard the trip as prudent in all the circumstances. Further, a player is careless if he breaches his duty to take reasonable care to avoid acts which can be reasonably foreseen to result in a reportable offence.

Presumably, Hawthorn's counsel took the view that given the broad nature of careless conduct under the Tribunal's rules, the video evidence and what Howe told him as part of the preparation for the tribunal appearance, Hawthorn's counsel wasn't confident he could persuade the tribunal that the trip wasn't careless conduct. As I understand the rules, if Hawthorn had contested the MRO's view that the trip was careless, then the Tribunal could have determined it constituted rough conduct, which would have increased the penalty.

I really don't know why we bother to turn up to these things.

I feel sorry for Howe.

Well then he may as well give up his job as an advocate. Surely in this instance there was enough grey to contest whether the trip was 'careless' or 'accidental'.

He could have brought in a bio-mechanics expert, put Howe on the stand etc etc etc.

Even if we did that, I can't see any scenario where the tribunal would unilaterally vary the charge brought to the actual tribunal and increase the penalty for trying to legitimately defend your own player.

It's like a judge in a shoplifting case can't unilaterally decided to charge a defendant with armed robbery because they didn't plead guilty to the initial charge.

He's a very silly boy. Thick as a brick sh*t house and hope he learns as there are plenty of players knocking down the door to take his spot.
He doesn't need to be doing that stuff...just play the ball.
The punch a week at most. Cripps legs are made of flour the way he went down. But he doesn't need a punch to the jaw as well...
The trip two weeks....didn't like the look of the trip. Regardless of what other players have done in the past ..there was force in the trip and cracked the guys leg. I'd be upset if it happened to a Hawks player.

if it was deliberate and not just a reflex and bad luck

yep a lot of people baying for blood like it helps anything

in no way was the punch a default two weeks when you look at the number of head hits that get a week, a fine, or in some cases nothing

feel like he copped the two incidents in the one week loading as well, either in isolation might have been ok or a 1 week but because there was two incidents in the one game he became a bigger target

still can't understand how it ends up as the same amount of time out as the Jeremy Cameron one though

Apparently, Cripps has just extended his contract at Carlton. And everyone here said Howe just gave him a light tap! Ha!

Thank goodness this happened AFTER the tribunal decision otherwise I suspect Howe could have been suspended far, far longer.

Exactly, but the two punches Cripps threw first were not shown on any video clips I have seen when the biased AFL media replayed the incident. Howe deserved a week, and as for th tripping, well that was just b/s.
the afl needs to start penalising the instigator it seems only the retaliator cops it

The AFL acts as do the the police. The one who causes the most damage is the one who gets done. Doesn't seem to matter who instigated it.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch ......

Sam Mitchell, Tom Mitchell approve of this or disapproves if you get my drift.

Happened ten times a game for those two, I'm just proud that our boys don't squeal like shot pigs and just get on with it.
I like the fact that Howe has made it known that he is just a litlle dangerous to be around, just don't want him rubbed out every other week.

Clearly still concussed! Carlton should be raked over the coals for allowing the kiddie to keep playing on the day and now taking advantage of the situation.

Doesn't look particularly brave, or innocent.

Howe was robbed for the trip. The AFL tribunal stole 3 matches of his career. We should all remind them politely - but very directly, if we ever bump into them, anywhere, ever.

The punch was deserved, as was the suspension for it.

Look on the bright side. Whenever we see Selwood's foot wander across the path of an opponent again, as we no doubt will, we can throw up the Howe suspension as argument he should at least be reported for it.

Yeah I will have to say that was a poor post by me, I over exaggerated the truth. The way he goes about his footy is fine, but he needs to reign in his dumb/impulse decisions, also his decisions with ball in hand need significant improvement.

I will admit that was a poor post, in reality everyone need a Howe, but we don't need a dumb one.

Nice one. :thumbsu:

Deserved a few for the punch on Cripps

Got hung out to dry in the 24-48 hours before the tribunal for the ‘trip’.

Wonder how many weeks a name player would have got ?
Im taking a wild guess and saying not 3
