I do agree they would play definitely if they were told to but why would Scott tell them to do that? That sort of attack quickly off half back and through the middle style doesn't suit the strengths and weaknesses in our back line, if we tried it we would lose more than we win. My points was if we could get either through draft/trade/FA some guys that can give us footskills and speed through there it would open up the option to be more flexible with our gamestyle and play quicker at times, which I think would be a good thing to have.

I don't agree with your assessment that we couldn't do it sucessfully. Looking at our defenders I'd say Lonergan and Kolodjashnij are the only two without either the right attacking temperament or appropriate foot-skills. I think our current play style is driven by fitness concerns which is why I don't think Wells wouldn't change it one bit if anything his inclusion would see us less likely to change.

You're one of the first bemoaning how slow we are and we need to move the ball quicker.
Wells/Deledio improve that.
One is cheaper and the other is more durable.
Would be happy to recruit either if the price is right (inb4 Larry Emdur reference ;))
Who wins the durability award?
Deledio and Wells both injury prone.
Wells being older tips it to Deledio?

Last 9 seasons games played.

Deledio: 22, 22, 22, 22, 22, 23, 19, 18, 11
Wells: 21, 7, 19, 21, 20, 22, 10, 2, 19.

Deledio more durable imo.

That actually shows that neither is injury prone although both have had injuries as almost all players do.
In the last 2 seasons, that is clearly not so- Deledio 29/45, Wells 21/48

Agree with this. We've built our gameplan around the strengths of our personnel. If we had more line breakers we would play differently because it's currently one of few weaknesses we have.

I am not sure its fitness after all we are a very good last quarter team.

I think the reality is more our defence is elite at 1on1 marking contests but we dont have a lot of options for speed and attacking footskills out of there (thurlow will help though). The current gamestyle in terms of how we defend and move the ball out of there i feel is designed to fit the strengths of those players.

I agree with you that we're setting up to our strengths.

I think our 4th quarter advantage comes from us running "intelligently" rather than by outworking the opposition. Our clearance advantage has two effects, it allows us to get deep I50s with minimal running effort and it also means that the opposing team starts their possession chains further from their goal. When we counter attack off half back we move it slowly, not only does it minimize turnovers that can cut us open but it means our players use less energy moving the ball from defensive 50 to offensive 50 while teams that move the ball quickly can do a lot of wasteful running, the whole team sprints forward in a quick counter attack when most of them won't be involved in the play, and they also have to sprint back to flood their defense when they commit turnovers from their fast ball movement, they end up ping-ponging from one end of the ground to the other as each team makes mistakes. By the 4th quarter the opposing team has little in the tank while we are relatively fresh.

Not sure about Lang,he is a tryer but has to many bad turnovers for mine, not a good sign for a young
player going forward.

Lang is ok. He is second or third year. He could be really good in the future.

Andare gatti!!

I guess I'm in the same boat as some other surporters, unsure where he plays he's best footy.
I didn't think he was much good in the last 2 VFL games, those type of players on the edge of the best 24 players should play well in the VFL IMHO.
I hope he has a good preseason and has a better year next season.
I thought he played a few really good games early in the year, particularly when he got the chance to move into the middle. Loved his first game against Hawthorn in particular, when he moved really well with limited opportunities. Later it seemed as though the advent of Scott Selwood and Menegola just kept him out of the side despite the fact that he was playing really good VFL footy.

Don't forget Menegola. He's got a great tank of him and always seems to bob to the top in the last.

Jake Niall confirmed Pies have a plus $500,000 per year three year deal on the table for Wells, while North are offering just two, and Geelong have an interest in him but don't have the salary cap room so would have to have someone traded out.

We have mismanaged things if we can have 3-4 retirements this year and not have $500k freed up.

Not at all, if after last years massive spending spree we only have to move on our veterans then we have done a great job. We don't know how our payments were structured to fit everyone in. There is a good chance we pushed this years salaries into later season to fit everyone in.

Another thing to note is our vets currently have 130k per player not count within the cap which is disappearing the end of the year.Any saving from there retirement will be a lot less. And if we keep any we're effectively increasing there effect on the salary cap by that amount.

Guys like Stanley, McCarthy, Menzel, Cowan, Menegola and Ruggles are going to see large pay rises while Gregson and Cockatoo move of their base contracts. Probably around 100k per player per year.

We don't have the quality (or age) of list that should be having those difficulties. I just don't agree with Niall on this one. We would easily be able to work things to have $500k available after retirements.

What the hell are Collingwood doing?
Let them!!!!!

Very happy to see Wells get games there at the expense of some of thier younger players - DeGoey - let him get pissed off and leave.

Remove the money aspect they're willing to pay Wells, this makes sense from Collingwood imo.

Have you seen a lot of their players foot skills?

They're VFL standard kicks of the footy, particularly in the back half. Looking at the PF on the weekend their VFL players are no better.

An elite user of the footy does make sense for Collingwood imo.

Yep. I am of the same mind.
I would not want to see Wells at Geelong. He will turn 32 years old before the season starts.
I would rather put games into the likes of Cockatoo.

Lol so you have just ignored all his very valid points.
