Presti should beat Hall, he's exactly the type of player Presti is best at neutralising. Then again Hall has been on fire, so who knows.

There's no way Hahn will be playing Round 1. One glancing blow to the face again before it's properly healed and he'll be in exceedingly bad shape - you don't want to risk only having 21 effective players.

Surely the Doggies have some backup plans? So far you're missing a few key players but they can be covered yeah?

Hall could be more of a threat this time around though because of the midfield he has delivering him the ball. Dogs have great footskills, especially when you compare them to the up and unders he has been getting at Sydney for years.

Pie eyed I do enjoy your quote. I think some people forget though the dogs Barry Hall is very different to the Sydney Hall. Not the player but the much quicker and quality delivery he is getting now. Much more dangerous personally.

presti to line up on hall at the start of the game,
just before the bounce presti sprints up the wing,
presti receives it from ball who got the jolly tap out,
presti takes a couple of bounces and kicks a long goal from 55 out.

Who will get the job on Hall? Presti, Maxy or Harry?

My nomination for Thread Title of the Year.:thumbsu:

There's an Irish dance called the Siege of Ennis, which features some very useful defensive/offensive moves. I think we could use it as the basis for an approach to containing Barry, with Presti, Maxy, Shaw, Leroy and Harry dancing rings round him.

Look here:

or here for a freer interpretation, and imagine Barry H in the middle of it.

Whoever plays on him had best be ready to niggle the hell out of him, everyone knows a good patented Barry Hall rage black out basically means an assured victory for the opposition. It'll be Presti who gets the job on him, no questions asked, but there will definitely be a second defender (Maxwell) who will be staying pretty close for the contested ball.

Yet I reiterate, we need to get him to rage.

Presti wants one more goal before he retires, and from the Brisbane game last year it looks like Malthouse might be happy to oblige. I wonder if we'll see him moved forward for any game this year.

He only ended up in the forward line because Leigh was doing a solid job on Brown, it was pretty much the end of the game and there was very little inherent risk letting Presti go up and shake up their backline.

If Presti starts, or even migrates forward during a game outside of those circumstances, I will quite literally sh*t my pants.

We must stop Griffin, Boyd and Hall and i think we will win the game. I think the dogs will be different this year and will play more differently in the way they go forward because they have Barry Hall and they wont have the unpredictability in their forward line which is a good thing for us. Griffin and Boyd seem to have their best games against us so hopefully Mick has found the right players to put on em. On Griffin il put Dale Thomas and on Boyd i think Ben Johnson can stay with him. to beat the dogs we have to tackle hard and not just bomb the ball forward we need to hit tarkets. I rekon we will beat em! Go Pies!!

Presti is the obvious opponent for Hall but if the Dog's midfield gets on top like St. Kilda's does against us Hall will kick 5 and we will get done. This is more a test of our new ruck and midfield set up than anything else. If we can beat the Dog's and Saints early in the season we can be confident that we are ligitimate contenders. If we lose both then it's back to the drawing board.

But if you go three against Hall in the air we will have two loose men on the ground.

Generally against us(please correct me if I am wrong) Shaw takes johnno and Maxwell takes Hahn and they don't play that loose(but then again both those players could be missing in round 1).

Our defenders work really well for each other. All of our defenders are very good at zoning off their opponents and coming across as third man up. It depends on whose in the best position who will do this but all of Maxwell, Shaw, Toovey and O'Brien do it. We often play one loose defender (Maxwell) although not always - but besides that I don't think it will mean loose opponents.

That is a very good point. I think he will be much more dangerous simply because the style of play the Doggies adopt is generally a high scoring brand of footy. That said Presti is an incredibly good FB and Hall is exactly the sort of forward he is suited to - which is strange considering the fact they have not matched up on each other often.

Very important we at least finish very close if we can't beat them early.

Toovey usually gets Aker and I'd go with Harry on Murphy.

Agree.

The thing with Hall, he'll more often then not have a crumber in front of the contest when he plays on Presti, as he's far less likely to just get those uncontested marks as has so far with the Dogs. Whoever has that crumber just has to block some space or be 3rd man up (watch your cheek bone though).

We have to remember he'll get very good delivery so our pressure through the middle has to be very good.

Tooves on Aker
Presti on Hall
Harry O on Murphy
Heater probably get Higgins as heater can follow him into the midfield
Maxwell probably Hill (not as dangerous as others and allows Maxy more freedom)

This is what I was going to post with one addition. The frequency of the ball coming in along with the speed will make the job harder on Presti.

Hall is grabbing everything at the moment, and his kicking boots are well and truly on...

Presti should still beat him...

What he said - the first bit at least. If the Bulldogs midfield explodes there'll be no stopping Hall. The midfield will have probably the toughest game of the year until September because the Doggies mids are flying and plentiful in number.

Not sure that a defeat is a case of back to the drawing board just yet.... but a win will be a massive show of force against the odds.

My prediction: Hall to kick 3 - 4 goals. The Bulldogs gamestyle seems to suit the big bastard. An inform Hall is very hard to stop.

I think this one is a really hard call, Hall has neaver played well against us because we always seem the beat Sydney and the ball neaver came down to him. But at the doggies I think it is likely that we may not have anyone to match up on him, Presti is the first choice but I worry hall will be to quick on the lead.I think presti will start on him but harry will go onto him latter in the game, in the end I don't think we will be able to stop him, unless we manage to limit the ammount of ball he gets sent to him, which is unlikely.

One of prestis greatest strengths is his speed.

If presti can keep up with fev he can certainly keep up with hall

Yep, I agree with these. Geez, their forwardline looks a lot more manageable without Johnson and Hahn, doesn't it?

I'm not too worried about Hall to be honest. Presti has continually had his measure, and he really only looked dangerous the other night when he was one out with a really undersized and out of form Dawson. Cloke smashed Dawson 3 weeks back as well.
Hall's other really good game was on an undersized and all round average player in Gibson, I think we'll control him a lot better.

Presti to blanket him, Maxy to provide a bit of a chop out.

There smalls are more of a worry than him, although we definitely start ahead if Johnson and Hahn don't play. Shut down Higgins and get someone to mildly subdue Cooney and we are halfway there.
Can't let Hargrave dictate the terms of the game like last time either, I'd play Thomas or McCarthy as defensive forwards on him (or Harbrow, depending on who they are running most the play through).

Hall was great in all 3 of his games invig, though I agree we should be able to limit his opportunities and the space he has.
