Do we need another AFL Club or are there too many as it is?

What would be awesome would be to break up the "merger" between Brisbane & Fitzroy.
Put Fitzroy back into Victoria and the Bears back into Brisbane :)

Then merge Brisbane & the Gold coast!

Relocate North Melb to Tassie.

Build a boutique stadium at Princes park 30K capacity.

Once again.

THE Fitzroy Football Club is already in Victoria. It never left. It never merged. 134 years old next year.

I can only speak for myself, I posted preemptively because I knew Melbourne clubs supporters would complain about the existing expansion teams. I'm a bit over listening to how we've caused global warming, earthquakes and plagues.
Was hoping that suggesting reduction in Melbourne would keep them on the defensive.
Sad and petty really, and I'm ashamed:oops:

Ok over it now and ready to move on:rainbow:
Lol,nice honest answer :)
I can understand it must get awfully tedious for the expansion clubs but remember,it's nothing actually personal against these clubs, people just love to complain. The Victorians did it when WC started having success also, even though they saved the VFL. Eventually GWS will be accepted and people will complain about something else I would assume.

If we're talking of reducing the number of clubs in Melbourne to stop the dilemma of who to merge, solve it by merging everyone (nearly).
Collingwood are always banging on about being the biggest club (and the rest of us need a team to hate) so let them go it alone.
Geelong isn't really in Melbourne so they can stay as is.
Easiest way is to do it geographically (also has the benefit of matching a "bigger" club with a "smaller" club):
Western Bulldogs & Essendon: Maribyrnong Bulldogs - Essendon jumper but with royal blue instead of black
North Melbourne & Carlton: North Melbourne Blues - Navy blue with a redesigned monogram
Melbourne & Richmond: Melbourne Tigers - Melbourne's yolk in Richmond's colours
Hawthorn & St Kilda: Monash Hawks - Tri-panel with red, brown and gold

Redistribute the four teams as needed, or reduce the number of teams.
This would easily be the best solution. It would also be the solution that would keep the most supporters still involved in the game. It's also the fairest. Might need to debate some of the names and colours but this would be an excellent idea. There is defiantly to many teams in Victoria for the league to be it's strongest and kicking out individual clubs could do more harm than good.

Need less teams
The quality of games has dropped, partly due to over complicated rule changes, partly because the draft pool hasn't expanded

Less teams = better players on each team = better games
Expanding it takes time.

But if you are so willing to put your club to the axe then go for it.

Why is it that the reaction to anybody willing to suggest less teams is to say "your team can go"

If the talent isn't there, and the population watching the product isn't there, it's not good to have as many teams as the AFL does

The league is making money from a TV deal that's the result of good PR, rather than good management

People will never, ever stop whining like a little bitch about the number of Melbourne based clubs.

My only complaint is that the whining starts earlier each off season.

let's take it a step further, two teams only with 50% of the available talent to choose from for each side.

Please point out when it has and no team was shit?

Thats all your opinion, its wrong, but its your opinion.

Why do people keep heralding the need to reduce the amount of clubs in the league? Why would any organisation in their right mind decide to drop revenue and exposure? The reality is is that the AFL will almost certainly never wish to merge or reduce the amount of teams, and therefore games, in the competition unless teams are costing them money. Currently all clubs, including the new clubs, are making the league money through tv exposure, sponsorship, media attention, attendances etc and will continue to grow and establish themselves in the future.

I definitely see the AFL expanding further into the future. If we see the AFL purely as a money making business, they will only expand into markets where they can grow their product so existing markets will be unlikely. This is why Tassie is an unlikely destination even though they love the product. If they were considered then a Northern team encompassing NT, North Queensland and possibly PNG etc could also be an option due to the local interest. I'm undecided whether you would get the membership/sponsorship etc required from either locations though but they would create another game to watch, people to attend etc

Surely the AFL is looking further afield though. Port Adelaide are attempting to make links with China, other teams are sniffing around India and the AFL has played games in New Zealand. With International flights becoming shorter and cheaper I see expansion into other overseas markets a definite objective. I don't think we will see it in the next few decades but expect more and more home & away games to be played internationally as time goes on the build up this expansion concept.

But hey keep living in a romantic delusion that the over crowded Melbourne market is a sound business model long term.

That's the point though, Victoria happens to be a huge chuck of the revenue of the game. The AFL has to be very careful before slashing teams because fans can and do leave the game. If they slashed the number of teams in Victoria and redistributed them to other states, there's likely to be a (big) net loss rather than a gain to league revenue. You don't slash your main constituency. This idea that smaller clubs are such a drain on the league is nonsense. The money that the AFL helps the smaller clubs with is really tiny compared to what they reap from keeping them with regard to broadcast rights. Also, keeping them around ensures decent attendance rates in Melbourne. Attendance would drop if teams were redistributed around the country. Whether the market is overcrowded in Melbourne is also debateable. Victoria's population is growing faster than the rest often country - Melbourne is a big piece of that.

"Brisbane Bears-Fitzroy Football Club Limited, Trading as Brisbane Lions Australian Football Club[1]"
The "merger" did happen.. even though it was more of a take over/excuse to cull a team.
but yes I see where you are coming from.

Ok ok.... if you want to actually believe that the Fitzroy Reds

They're not the Fitzroy Reds. Do you know what actually happened in December 2008 when Fitzroy entered the VAFA? Do you know what happened in the 2010 Victorian Supreme Court case against the Brisbane Lions? Would you like me to explain it to you?

is the same Fitzroy that was running around in the VFL/AFL that's up to you.

Legally, spiritually and morally it is the same Fitzroy Football Club. The legal aspect was established beyond doubt in 2010, by the Victorian Supreme Court when the Brisbane Lions called it into question.

but yes I know there is a FFC in Victoria.

THE Fitzroy Football Club. (established 1883). 134 years old next year.

OK. How about you explain how the "Fitzroy" was added to the "Brisbane Bears-Fitzroy Football Club Limited Trading as Brisbane Lions Australian Football Club." You tell me your version and then I'll tell you what really happened.

The "merger" did happen.. even though it was more of a take over/excuse to cull a team.

The merger did NOT happen. The Bears re-branded their club. The "Brisbane Bears-Fitzroy Football Club Limited, Trading as Brisbane Lions Australian Football Club" was established as a club in 1987 and continues to this day in the AFL.

The only places the AFL will expand to in the future is Sydney 3 or WA 3, that's where the population/ money is. Canberra maybe one day when the population is bigger or Tassie if they are really really lucky but there would have to be some sort of league shake up...
Only other place would be New Zealand if the AFL wanted to try something stupid that would almost certainly fail. North Queensland and NT are both to small
