I can't help but think that Melbourne is in dire need of another sizeable stadium, preferably south-east of the city, to accommodate Melbourne's AFL teams.

Over the past decade, the number of Melbourne's AFL playing stadiums has gradually whittled away to just the MCG and Telstra Dome along with Optus Oval. Only problem with this is that these stadiums are all within 3 kilometres of the CBD while at least 60% of Melbourne's population live south or east of the CBD and I'd guess that the demographic centre of Melbourne's metropolitan area would be at least 10 kilometres south or east of the CBD.

Do you think that Melbourne does need another AFL playing stadium and if so, where?

I'd like to see another 35,000 to 50,000 stadium in Melbourne's south-east, somewhere close to transport facilities, easily accessible and not in a rain-belt, though I don't know if any available land which fits this criteria actually still exists in Melbourne!

With this new stadium I'd see:

Western Bulldogs, Essendon and Geelong (occasionally) play at Telstra Dome
Kangaroos, Richmond, Melbourne, Collingwood play at MCG
Carlton play at Optus
St.Kilda and Hawthorn play at new stadium

This way you'd remove the likelihood of teams playing matches at Optus, which no team but Carlton seem to like playing there.

hmmmmmm, after the debarcle of Colonial, i would be wanting to wait a while before that got of the ground.

On face value it seems allright, but theres $$$$$ involved, and whether the AFL/government or whoever has the money is another issue.

Will it get filled????? If clubs are struggling to fill Optus Oval at times, then would think its gonna be hard.

It's unlikely for the forseeable future and would cost plenty of $$$, would probably need Govt., private and AFL funding to get it off the ground though it just seems that what I've heard majority of Hawthorn and St.Kilda fans would prefer to be playing out of the southeast (or Waverley if it was still around) than their current playing situation (Hawthorn out of the MCG and St.Kilda out of Telstra Dome).

Not much chance of it happening at all.

With the upgrade of the MCG taking up much time and $$$$$$ there is no way that the AFL would commit to another stadium.

Could be feasabl in 10-15 years depending on what clubs are around the financial situation of those clubs and the AFL

demolish Optarse and build a new studium over that sh*t hole!

What is wrong with Optus? Out of all the grounds I have seen this year, it has the best surface! It always has! The main problem is parking, and surely that couuld be fixed. It is the best stadium that I know of! I like it a helluva lot more than I like the G and that stupid Docklands!

As someone who doesn't live in Melbourne I never did understand why the AFL got rid of Waverley.

I second that motion. It's beyond me, too. Why build a stadium only a couple of miles from the MCG? Should've been built out East, on or near Waverley, and with a train station next to it (unlike Waverley).

I was in cold, wind swept rainbelt, had poor traffic flow and no real public transport. It was poorly designed in that the stands were too far from the action. It was an uninviting eyesore and had a pathetic scoreboard. It had no redeeming features at all IMO.

As a Collingwood supporter forced to go there every few weeks in the 80's and early 90's when the AFL was trying to prove it was popular, I hated the place. That is even though I lived nearby just off Ferntree Gully Road.

Problem with Waverley was it's impossible to get there. OK if you're driving, but public transport was a nightmare. It was quicker to get on public transport from Spencer St to Kardinia Park than Waverley Park.

Does anyone know who bought Waverly and what it is currently used for?

Mirvac bought it, its going to be knocked down (well most of it) and its gonna become a residential area (some of it)
