I can't help but think that Melbourne is in dire need of another sizeable stadium, preferably south-east of the city, to accommodate Melbourne's AFL teams.
Over the past decade, the number of Melbourne's AFL playing stadiums has gradually whittled away to just the MCG and Telstra Dome along with Optus Oval. Only problem with this is that these stadiums are all within 3 kilometres of the CBD while at least 60% of Melbourne's population live south or east of the CBD and I'd guess that the demographic centre of Melbourne's metropolitan area would be at least 10 kilometres south or east of the CBD.
Do you think that Melbourne does need another AFL playing stadium and if so, where?
I'd like to see another 35,000 to 50,000 stadium in Melbourne's south-east, somewhere close to transport facilities, easily accessible and not in a rain-belt, though I don't know if any available land which fits this criteria actually still exists in Melbourne!
With this new stadium I'd see:
Western Bulldogs, Essendon and Geelong (occasionally) play at Telstra Dome
Kangaroos, Richmond, Melbourne, Collingwood play at MCG
Carlton play at Optus
St.Kilda and Hawthorn play at new stadium
This way you'd remove the likelihood of teams playing matches at Optus, which no team but Carlton seem to like playing there.
