I think the club is trying to address the outside run issues. We've drafted a few blokes with either pace or big engines of late. Martin might not be quick but he plays a semi outside role, not the in & under Cunnington type.

I agree, but Martin doesn't have three slow inside mids at Richmond, I think it would impact their team negatively if that was the case. He has the freedom to play the role he does due to the structure and game plan they play.

The Ziebell situation is a tricky one. On one hand you could argue that he's had to play predominantly as an inside mid because of the lack of other options (especially this year)

We don't need another inside midfielder, that is the reason we are chasing Kelly and Martin. Cunnington played his best footy when Swallow was out with his Achilles and Ziebs was missing a lot of games injured or suspended. We functioned best with Cunnington as the sole inside mid with Greenwood playing a support role.

It is not working for us in 2017 because McDonald, Dumont, Clarke & Atley are inexperienced in the midfield and Goldy's form is career worst. If we get Kelly and Martin are we going to push out Swallow and Ziebell or are we going to push out the others i mentioned in this paragraph back to fringe roles or the VFL?

On the other hand you could argue that Scott rolling with 3 talls for the last 8 years has meant he wouldn't work with that structure.

Ziebell wouldn't replace a KPF, he would replace a smaller forward. His competition would be the Thomas, Garner, Turner, Wood, Higgins, Simpkin group.

That being said, with Ziebell going forward we could probably keep our forward structure with 2 key forwards, ideally Brown and Waite (until he retires), three mediums in Ziebell, Higgins and Garner plus someone who would play the small forward role from Thomas, Turner and Simpkin. There would be scope to keep one on the pine, especially Simpkin if he develops to being able to play some midfield roles.

That structure would also make it more viable to play two ruckmen, with one on the pine who can go forward for stints.

I'm hopeful 2018 will bring a new set up.

I am hopeful as well, I think Ziebell should have been moved there this year if we chased Kelly and Martin so early and that was the intent to move him forward for the future, he needs development time there if it is going to be his core role. I don't think him not being in the middle this year as much would have made a significant difference to where we are now.

From his interview on the couch, it seems apparent he sees himself as an inside midfielder who goes forward for short stints and not the other way around, he said he would be prepared to go forward if that was asked of him but I am not convinced that the public face is exactly what transpires behind closed doors.

Probably for the Ziebell thread, but I think Ziebell playing forward would not only be better for the side, but better for Ziebell himself. The way he uses his body through the midfield he's going to be knackerd before his time. Spending more time forward would prolong his career

I think it's covered in the Ziebell thread, but our existing players and structure are important factors when considering how other potential recruits fit into our side.

I am just saying that Martin sounds attractive only if we make a number of other changes that we have basically been calling for over a number of years which have never eventuated, we can't just assume those changes are going to happen.

I don't think Richmond fans would need any motivating to get along to finals as they have been as rare as hens teeth for the last 40 odd years.

True but I'm not convinced they won't go out in straight sets. Depends on their opponent. If they get, say, Sydney first up - anywhere - lose that and then have to play in Adelaide or Sydney (against GWS maybe) or something, they could be in trouble.

They've had some good wins but some other games they been lucky that the opponent was decimated by injury during the game. That's happened more than once.

I genuinely wish them well but I'm not convinced their ladder position is an adequate reflection of their quality.
