So some people here are saying Grundy should be 'untouchable'? LOL. I guess we overrate our players just like all other supporters. Nothing about what Grundy does is indispensible. He is a good AFL defender, but that's it. I guarantee that Taylor Walker, for all his faults, has more value than Grundy in the open market and the Crows would not be willing to do that trade straight up (if it's even a possibility mind you). Part of trade value is potential and Walker still has a fair bit of that, no matter what you think of him. He might not be a better player than Grundy right now, but Grundy is what he is, and I'm pretty sure Adelaide could find a better offer somewhere. If they had to deal with us and wanted a defender, their starting point in any negotiations would be Johnson. You can bet on that.

its a moot point anyway becasue we just re-signed him last yr (contract extension) until end og 2013, and you dont trade away kkp unless they want to go. do you mean johnson or johnston, because he would be on the trade table for walker

dont think he would screw over the crows, i think he has been a suppoter of the crows since he was a kid

I get that feeling too, I think if a deal can't be made, he'll stay at the Crows. If he supported the Crows as a kid, it's strange that he would want a trade in the first place though.

I know this is all hypothetical but in order to get someone like Walker we would have to give up something valuable. Grundy is a very good key defender but we have plenty of very good key defenders at the moment and we will have 2 to 3 years to find replacements for Richards and LRT (possibly longer). By trading away Grundy for Walker we do not make our defence weaker but we do make our forward line a hell of a lot stronger (and our forward line has been a huge problem for us for a few years now).
We don't have plenty at all imo. Ted Richards has been our FB for most of the year. He has done very well but any side that has someone like Ted as a key defender clearly doesn't have plenty of very good key defenders.

I'd much rather persist with LJ rather than give up someone like Grundy for Walker.

LJ and Sumner might be a good bundle for Walker as they're both South Aussies and seem to be a bit homesick (Sumner more so, but I'd suspect having been here for three years for 2 games would be playing on LJ's mind).

Let's be honest with ourselves Stat, if we made that trade happen we'd be getting away with highway robbery.

Walker has shown way more than those two combined. Johnston and Sumner may end up being very good players, but on face value that'd be a huge win for us.

To be perfectly honest i would be okay with a Grundy/Johnston trade for Walker. Our defence is super strong and wouldn't be any weaker if we traded Grundy as we would simply move LRT back to the backline and put Walker in the forward line with Reid.

It would be a very good deal for us (considering our strength in defence and our weak forward line) and i suspect it would be a good deal for Adelaide as well (though we would have to ask a Crows supporter about that).

"Our defense is super strong"
Break that down -
Talls; LRT, Richards, Grundy
Smalls; Smith, Shaw
Medium; Tadgh, Eski, Mattner, Johnson

To me that says we're highly reliable on Reg. LRT hasn't got that much longer left and Ted's not suited to the bigger/better forwards.

Yeah Walkers no doubt got some talent, but thats not everything, look at Jesse White. Trading Grundy would be a huge mistake.

As for Lew Johnston, why would we draft the guy, watch as his first year is ruined by injury, watch him improve to the point he plays a couple of games with us, gets some continuity and confidence.. and then trade him away?

Yep, agreed.

If we need some real trade bait this year Seaby looks like the obvious candidate. He's behind Mumford as first choice ruck and is likely to stay there and he doesn't offer enough to be played as the second ruck. For that reason there's a chance that he'd welcome a first team opportunity.

Rucks generally have good currency at draft time as the availability of "plug and play" alternatives is usually scarce. Adelaide are probably ok for ruckmen but he would be in hot demand with some others (more than likely including GWS).

That looks like our best chance to extract some trade currency (which players like Sumner and Johnston are unlikely to bring) without sacrificing some of the up and comers.

dg has a point. Walker is still very raw and excellent at providing a few brain farts throughout a match.

Unlike Jesse, he does look like more of a natural footballer though.

Still, I think we need to actually try and get a return on investment with LJ. Or does he just become another high draft pick the Swans failed with.

Bedford is on holidays and has asked me to send this response on his behalf.

Here goes ......

"Normally I would jump on my high horse, call you a pesky Johnny come lately newbie and rant something about Bunghole. But you know....you're right. I let my blind emotions override my better judgement. Is it the medication or am I just a having my road to Damascus moment ? Who knows ?

This has me cackling. Good job Bunghole. :p

On a more pertinent note, securing Walker would be a dream, though I really can't conceive what adequate compensation would be. Certainly our second-rounder would be used and some player of genuine talent/potential would probably have to be spared too if we were to lure him away from other suitors. LJ and/or Sumner would probably not be enough. They're talented, but as of yet unproven.

I personally think Walker will probably stay at the Crows now that Craig is gone.

Bunghole indeed !

Only Bedfroth is allowed to insult me on this forum (it's kind of a loose agreement we have)

Walker's biggest problem, as is the case with many other very talented players, seems to be a general lack of smarts.

Oh, I think he'd struggle through Spot Goes to School, but he's not wanting for a football brain.

Only thing holding him back at AFL level is he still tries to play as a small. He misses out on what should be the gimme 2-3 goals a game a tall should manage just by marking.

He's the next Fev, but could well run into Fev-like problems, I reckon.

This was just posted on Twitter, the Taylor Walker to Sydney rumour just keeps on growing legs.

SpyandSource deepthroat
Crows feathers plucked again. Expect Taylor Walker to the swans to be one of the first trades done in 2011.
