OK, so Armstrong has requested a trade to Sydney, likely for a swap with Sumner.

Anyone know what kind of player he is?
He's a running half back flanker who could play as a wingman. He has above average foot speed and very neat disposal over short to medium distances. Not a hugely prolific ball winner but a useful contributor, and has the potential to be a decent player at AFL level for the Swans, someone who could hold down a spot from 18th to 25th if he maintained consistency.

I'd leave him to GWS, have too many HBF already.

IMO, we should aim for:

Key forward
Outside mid with excellent disposal
Small forward.

Lacking all of those at the moment. Yes McGlynn, etc, might fill in at FP but we need specialists in all positions. Not fill-ins.

Read the article...he's requested a trade to Sydney! Sydney have obviously head-hunted him as it would look pretty stupid if the nominated club didn't want you

Would be interested in getting Armstrong if it was only for a straight swap with summer. How do we have enough hbf's? Kennely gone, mal and Heath with chronic knee problems. Would be a good get. If the deal involved draft picks as well I wouldn't bother.

Agreed, we used to have too many HBF's, but Mattner has become more of a lockdown defender, Shaw is 30, Kennelly gone, and Malceski / Heath have injury concerns.

The counter argument to that would be, that any reasonable midfeilder can play a loose HBF type role (see Heppell), and McVeigh has been good at setting up play off the HB line.

I'd be fine with picking up Armstrong if he comes cheap, as he could possibly replace Shaw long term.

The majority on the Adelaide board are happy to get rid of Armstrong. They say he showed glimpses of promise against the cellar dwellers but thats it. I think a fourth round pick no more.

I wasn't aware of Armstrong's past. I hope he's not a headcase.

I don't think we have too many half back flankers. Shaw + Mattner are getting on, Kennelly is gone, and who knows is Malceski can get back to playing good football consistently. The only other player on the list who looks like he might realistically play that position is Johnston, and most of us want him up forward. I don't think we need one more than an outside mid/full forward, but it's a need.

I know of a DUI.

That's all though, if there's any more does anyone care to add to that?
Serious issues with homesickness, he was on the verge of walking out a couple of times. I believe his mum actually moved to Adelaide for a while to help him settle

His mum lives in Sydney though right? But my interpretation of the words "sufficiently troubled past" and "headcase" was referring more to other issues. But hey Sully and legend correct me if me Im wrong.

I was friends with him at high school before he transferred to Assumption. Great bloke. The DUI seemed very much out of character for him.

He's also a bloods man through and through, hence the request to go specifically to the Swans. I know he'll be determined to impress.

He's not a headcase. Just a normal guy who made a mistake. The discussion should be left to his football ability

If Armstrong has requested a trade to us, he knows what is expected of him coming to the Bloods. Saying that, he seems a good fit. Had a read of his Adelaide player profile, Good disposal :thumbsu:, quick enough, and a HBF/mid which has been discussed above will be a need for us going forward. I say get him. If costs only Sumner..win..if he costs Sumner and late pick....win. I have faith that we will not pay overs and if we get him, I rekon he will fit right in..past problems aside.

BTW ...I also note that the Adelaide Crows website picture has Tony Armstrong looking a lot like the player formally known as Prince!

LIke the look of this guy a bit of size some pace and footskills we can use that.

I can't help but think Sydney must have talked to him since the season has ended because if it wasn't for his last 6 games when Bickley took over I think he would have been bloody lucky to be listed at any AFL club for the following year. We then offered him a contract which was all due to his form in the final 6 weeks so I can't help but think he must have been offered something similar from Syndey and the chance to go back home has him wanting to leave otherwise he would have signed with the Crows.

Will be interesting to see what each club wants/offers up for him. Good pace, quick and I was quite surprised at his ability to actually hit up a target (pretty rare at Adelaide these days...) but has plenty of weaknesses as well (such as no physical game whatsoever).

Ability to hit a target and no physical game whatsoever? Sounds like he's the complete opposite of every other player on our list.

I've no doubt the Swans have been in his ear which is why he's specifically requested us as opposed to 'either Sydney team'. They've obviously identified him as a player who will fit into our lineup, and still has plenty of years in front of him. Our track record here is pretty good (if you ignore the likes of Paul Chambers), so I think he'll fit in well.

The only question is what it costs us.

As he's from NSW, the Swans had an agreement to rookie list him if he went through the draft un-selected two years ago. Unfortunately for us Adelaide selected him. The Swans have been in his ear since then, and as has been previously pointed out he is a Swans man through and through.

He will be very keen to make an impact in the seniors.
