Essendon have just set an new AFL era record

Look i think with Essendon we've given other teams a chance of success after winning 16 cups, the last being the Millenium Cup, and then resting on our laurels. Still tied with The Blues as the most successful team in AFL/VFL history. Who cares if we suck for the odd decade or so, our Seventeenth will be very sweet and then we'll lead the Cups tally anyway unless Carlton win a cup.

We need the other teams to have success to keep things on an even keel.

Sometimes you have to crash and burn and this has given other clubs opportunities.

That's fair. I don't really understand the whole fascination with Essendon not winning a final. I assume it's just a easy troll for Carlton/Collingwood fans to get a dig in.

I hope that Essendon will get back up there one day - your fans have been through a pretty sh*t ten years or so.

Essendon have had a thoroughly shithouse 15 years, there's absolutely no getting around that.

The "not winning a final" thing is just something Carlton supporters have come up with to hopefully make themselves feel a little better about their club, who have been equally shithouse (and have thrown on another four wooden spoons for good measure). Like it results in anything at all. Elimination final victories mean SFA - they really only exist for the benefit of TV networks. If you want to win the flag, you have to be in the top 4 and challenge from there.

I mean compare Carlton to Richmond. Carlton wins an elimination final in 2013, the first of three straight elimination final losses for Richmond, which according to some was a problem for the Tigers. I'm sure all at Richmond lose a heap of sleep about that loss... or maybe they think more about the fact they wanted to, you know, win premierships, so they got to where you need to be - the top four - and did just that. Twice. Meanwhile Carlton were off collecting more spoons.

Essendon are shithouse and haven't got near challenging for the flag since 2002. There's your takeaway, unless you're a Carlton supporter.

Ah yes, those horse and cart era and wartime premierships have a lot of relevance today.
4 flags in 50 years is ok, but the focus should really be of the dismal failure or the last 2 decades.

no flag from last year or before has any relevance today.

but yes, we've been dismal for a long time.
i watch games looking for signs we're getting better. most times i just laugh....cos we're not. we're an incredibly stupid team on and off the field for a lot of the time.

Going to beat Richmonds record of not achieving any success.

They went 30 something years with out a flag Essendon is probably about 10 years away from eclipsing it

1980-2017 was their drought.

Could be worse though
Saints and Dees won their last flags when the beatles were at the top of the charts....

I've always been VERY aware of our premiership drought and exactly how long it is relative to our history. Ie I'm aware of this club's shortcomings.

I had to be made aware of this one by opposition supporters. I guess it means more to them.

lol the real stat you should all be worried about is the fact we haven't won a premiership for 20 years yet we are still #1.

Essendon just doing their best to let everyone else catch up.

You need to win finals to even start challenge for a flag and that's why it's a popular stat to bring up - shows how long it has been since Essendon even were a sniff. The whole lot of "they don't matter" sort of misses the point - Richmond hadn't won a final in a long time either, guess what they had to do before they could win a flag...

Winning a final isn't the biggest deal but making top 4 and going out in straight sets doesn't exactly help you either... So to go on about the top 4 as important but winning a final isn't a big deal probably just shows it hurts a bit

Make the Top 4.

That's the whole point... the teams that beat them in those pointless elimination finals. Carlton, Port, North. It got them absolutely nowhere.

So thanks for illustrating my point perfectly.

It's just a silly sideshow for Carlton supporters. Essendon have been shit since 2002 and haven't looked like challenging for the Top 4 and the flag. That's what's important, not whether we won and lost a meaningless elimination final or not.

Maybe you should start a thread about it.

Unsuccessful clubs whose fans set the bar low and celebrate their minor successes too loudly (AKA Get back to us when you've actually won something)

I still remember cheering on West Coast in the semi final where they had beat Carlton by 3 points. I loved it!

I decided after the 2011 elimination final loss to watch the 1993 grand final on DVD.

I think ASADA needs to be involved before Richmond allow them to take this glorious title off our hands.

Surely they have developed a drug test to detect mediocrity by now.

Every preseason it's the year of the Bombers coming.. they will recruit another 5 fringe players in trade period and be ready for their run at the flag.. and as always they win trade period.
