Essendon's new coach

Sorry Sando is the next Geelong coach circa 2012 has all but been appointed why do you think he pulled out of the Port job?
Gah! I hate you CA08 :(

However they pick..

does he

a) Cull the list ( with 2 badly messed up drafts ) and rebuild, admitting the list was stuffed and that it wasn't the coaches fault and the board fscked up.
or
b) Keep the same lot and try and make them work, meaning he pretty much has to make finals ( or else he's no better than Knights )?

Rather not, might as well just appoint Hird. I wiould be looking at experienced assistants. Does Peter Sumich have a desire to coach?

Caracella has been at Collingwood and is now an assistant at Geelong - not the same as Hird at all.

Sumich as in the mix when Knights was being interviewed. Don't know why but didn't get the job.

For what it's worth, Mick Malthouse named Mark Neeld as his #1 assistant in an interview earlier in the year, even ahead of Nathan Buckley. Caused some mild controversy at the time, and gave some added fuel to those hoping for a Malthouse-Buckley implosion. Might be an idea for the Dons to go low-profile a la Melbourne and see where it takes them.
Neeld is a long shot - has some great attributes, read http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6136042&postcount=8 for example. But in this example, he still didn't get the job.

As for some mentions of Bomber Thompson. While he still loves the Bombers, he is close to the end of his coaching career. Coaching money would not entice him, he recently made $10 mil from property investments and wants to pursue that line. Even the mightily rich Essendon would struggle to find the money to pay him enough to make it worth his while.

any chance now of Lloyd pulling on the boots for a year? pretty sure I heard him on the radio today say he only had to be asked but I cant find anything about it to back that up.

The KPPs are already there, Hurley, Gumbleton, Pears, Hooker and Carlisle with Joe Daniher to come. Zaharakis, Colyer, Melksham and Myers start the midfield rebuild.

I don't expect any patience from BF experts.

If you mean the short interview on SEN this morning, he said that if the club asked for his views/opinions on anything he would help, but given his role with the AFL-AIS he's banned from actually working at any club. Never mentioned pulling on the boots again.

fair enough, I was onsite and must have heard it wrong...:thumbsu:
Plonk him in the goalsquare anyway I reckon...

Can Collingwood supporters tell me anything about Mark Neeld? He has been interviewed for the Port job and he has a good reputation. I think Essendon need to go outside the square, just like Melbourne did for Bailey. If Mark Williams is the best person for the job then that is great. But, I hope the board doesn't get seduced by his name.

He has a strong defensive philosophy and I think his catchcry is "make it hard for team to play us" or words to that effect.

I think he is a fair candidate but Alan Richardsons track record with youth development will probably be preferred.

After seeing Choccos coaching in recent years and his sides flakiness I can't see how he would be much of an upgrade on Knights, besides the obvious experience and flag credentials.

Bombers have to take a risk again and go a first timer IMO. Shocking blunder overlooking Hardwick.

Would have loved Dimma but would it be fair to say that the extra two years experience, including being involved with the 2008 premiership with Hawthorn made Dimma a better coach.

Loss for us, but a even better outcome for Richmond.

Last few drafts have been okay for us, the problem stands with our middle to senior tier players that are not at the same standard of most AFL clubs.

I'd expect a new club to come in and cut it reasonably deep considering we have a lot of players that are borderline AFL players. A new game plan to protect our young backline would be a handy addition.

Bombers need to have their faith restored, and there is only one man for the job: The Reverend, Neale Daniher.
The results he acheived at Melbourne, with no money, facilities and draft pick penalties should hold him in good stead.
Is currently football manager at West Coast, so is up to speed with current happenings.
The only queries are list management (tended to play older guys at the expense of younger ones) and the fact that he was unsucessful in his final year changing Melb's game plan to run and carry.

Thanks. Development is the club's no.1 need but we also need a more defensive mindset. I don't want to see the club embrace a boring Ross Lyon-style game plan, but at the same time Knights game plan required skills our list doesn't currently have. Essendon could probably do worse than hire a Neeld or Sanderson. I'm totally sold on Williams, considering his last couple of years at Port.

top 4 in betting -

Mark Williams 1.80
Mark Thompson 2.75
Alan Richardson 3.00
James Hird 8.00

$2.75 Thompson I seriously don't get, but looks like someone does....

his answer to the question yesterday about if he ever wants to return to essendon, was along the lines of "no, not really" - i guess that is coaching code for "yes please, asap!"

Those odds are with Sportsbet who react to newspaper stories etc. Sportingbet are usually more realistic:

Mark Williams 2.25
Alan Richardson 2.25
Mark Thompson 5.00
James Hird 8.00
Dean Laidley 15.00
Ken Hinkley 17.00
Gary ODonnell 17.00
Brenton Sanderson 21.00
Neale Daniher 26.00

I read somewhere today that Mark Thompson went from $101 to $2.75. Maybe someone knows something that we don't. (but more likely that the odds was too good to pass up)

I think Choc's a good thing but Daniher's the good value bet there.

Have to someone who doesn't over estimate the ability of the playing group. That was Knighter's main fault. The players didn't have the ability to follow his game plan. I'd go for Neale Daniher. We haven't had one of our own as a coach for 30+ years.

Wait until the Dockers lose this week:

Essendon will name new coach

MARK HARVEY !!

... this is no rumour I have heard . Just something I made up ! :D

Laidley for mine.

Did a great job as an assistant with us and reckon was a bit out of luck with the Roos.

Has done a great job with Primus if he had any influence over the last few weeks.

Get on him Bombers.
