Also where the hell can I get stuff to grow food.
Everywhere, just find Melons/Gourds/Mutfruit around the place, pick them and plant them in a dirt spot in your settlement

There's mutfruit in sanctuaryTa. I must be walking in the wrong places.
Should be some melons and gourd just behind the workshop in sanctuary tooThere's mutfruit in sanctuary
Tatos just over the way at Abernathy Farms
Are you enjoying it? It pretty much comes down to that with Fallout- Do what you want to do.
In terms of tangible benefits, the main one I can see is the prospect of having traders at higher levels who may sell you better stuff or cheaper stuff.
I think it's probably a bit easier to get into this mechanic if you've got a bit of experience with Fallout. I personally really want to give people cool, safe places to live in the Wasteland because I've seen how many dicks are out there in previous games. If you're a newcomer the 'care' factor probably isn't there yet, but it will be if you stick with the game in general.
None of that is any explanation as to why Fallout's autosaving system is so bad. GTA combines autosaving with its own checkpointing system and is better for it. The fact that Fallout doesn't have any form of checkpointing system to prevent issues like the video posted is some backwards development that shouldn't be in a 2015 game.
I'm enjoying the game as a whole but there is a few backwards as things development wise that seem out of place here.
um...
get a dog up ya.

kind of missed the point, you can't have a check point system like gta in fallout because each cell serves as the trigger to load everything. the whole mechanics of the game are different. its why the environment is dynamic.
if it's causing you that much trouble go into settings and turn off auto saving on opening a door.
Also where the hell can I get stuff to grow food.
I followed this and the dog keeps saying that he can't find anything.
It's not missing the point, you're defending a bad system. It's on the developers to come up with a system that allows people not to simply get screwed over by walking through the wrong door. The game is seemingly pretty good in the open hours, but there are some very real faults with it. The good certainly outweighs the bad by a long stretch, but I don't see why everyone is so afraid to criticise what are pretty apparent faults in the game.
It's not causing me any problems at the moment, but when the system can trap people via their own saves it is a bad system that deserves to be criticised.
Yep this. I just send him into the breach to distract the bad guys. He'll usually cop a flogging pretty quick and get injured, but once you pick everyone off he's fine again. Also if he's injured, go through a door and he'll appear next to you right as rainTo save on stimpaks, don't bother giving them to dogmeat unless desperate. Once the area is cleared, he's fine again.
