High intelligence ftw. Just set up sanctuary for the settlers, made some gun and armour mods...leveled up 3 times!

Go to concord and help the minutemen. Once you do that they'll go to sanctuary. One of them takes you through the basics.

When you get to sanctuary you have the option to go into build mode (hold select on xbox). You can then scrap materials, build houses, plant crops etc. Acts like a home base

How do you clean the settlement?

As you're crafting stuff and choosing where to put it, almost everything can be scrapped into resources. Fallen trees, the old bits of houses etc

Coolest thing I've done so far is make a sniper revolver. So damn overpowered for the stage of the game I'm at.

Very cool!

What level are you and which perk do you need for that?

So I seem to have lost dogmeat :(

Didn't swap him for another companion or anything - finished the first quest with Paladin Danse from the Brotherhood of Steel, started walking towards Diamond City and he just disappeared at some stage along the way. Only thing I can remember happening was I walked over a land mine of some sort.

Any ideas?

Ok crafters, question.

The materials/junk im picking up, do I need to break these down individually to salvage the materials, like ceramics from cups for example. Secondly, how do I break these down? Ive been able to scrap guns and armour but not junk? Currently its all stored in my workbench.

I know its probably simple but couldn't figure it out last night.

Expecting to get crucified, however.

I put a couple of hours into this last night and I have got to say so far it is head and shoulders above the rest as the least enjoyable game to play in the series (keep in mind I never played tactics). It just feels like another generic shooter with a couple of Fallout bits and pieces. Great you can craft stuff, but Power Armour in the first hour of game play….really.

The other games consumed my time when I played them (even NV that I didn’t overly rate) and couldn’t wait to play them. This one, not sure when I could be bothered playing again.

As long as they're in your workbench or your own personal inventory they'll be used up when required.

If you want to craft them yourself you'll have to drop them and then treat them like all the other junk in workshop mode.

Dont know if method 1 is wasteful or not. Eg using a watch might discard all parts when you only needed one part.

Would be good if someone could answer that actually

Ok reading through this thread it appears that it works as you first described

https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4/comments/3sagdn/crafting_tip_so_you_dont_waste_your_resources/

THe OP originally thought it wasted all parts, many have since written it doesn't.

Isn't entirely clear however and it may vary from platform to platform. It does seem like something that Mods will improve, as the system appears a little clunky.

God help your soul.

I'm the opposite, loved fallout 3 and new Vegas but am enjoying fallout 4 a lot more. This game has already consumed me, got home at 4 last night, played what I thought felt like 2 hours, turns out it was 9:30 when I got off and all I was doing was fixing my settlement sanctuary. So much to do and explore.

I was level 5 when I got it. afaik there are no specific perks (i'll have to double check) but I set my intelligence quite high from the beginning so I'm imagine that might be it.

It was more a question of required materials. I randomly picked up the revolver from an enemy, and i didn't have the right materials until I went off to clear
both the robotics dumping ground and satellite dish to the north.

1 shot head shots and 2 shot torso kills :D:D:D:

No doubt there is a lot to the game and development etc. It just hasn't felt like a Fallout game or why I loved the series to me. A Mate said I should forget it's a Fallout game and enjoy it for what it is. I replied that I could also go to a Water Treatment Plant and forget it is raw sewerage and take a leisurely swim.

Yes you get power armour early and it seems a bit crazy. Dont worry however thinking thats op. Reality is you can't just stroll around in it all the time or you will run out of power and you'll need to abandon it in the wastes. I did heaps of the game last night with the armour sitting back on the rack at sanctuary.

Game is awesome. Fallout on steroids

Spoilers kind of regarding the sanctuary

is it possible to make it so you can use the materials you collected in your main sanctuary across all of the other settlements you unlock?
Google up how to open up supply lines

Quick travel or wait. He'll generally show up if you haven't dismissed him.

Afaik he can't die

I left it at the Red Rocket (didn't follow Buck Swope and his band of Misfits), assumed it would be safe there.

I don't even use the power armor, I don't see the need for it at all.

Ok I've only put an hour and a half into it. Got out of the Vault and headed out doing a few things. Didn't understand whether I was "meant" to start building a home base straight away once I'd found the workshop but someone in this thread has clarified that. It's a nice touch. You have no clue what you are meant to do until you are given clues on where to head.

Question though (and sorry if it's obvious) After level up I got to the perks screen. The stars under each SPECIAL mimic what I chose in the beginning. But there was "training" mentioned and I could raise / lower the number of stars. What's that all about?

So you're mad you can't drink out of toilets any more? Gotchya :$:thumbsu:
