Well by popular demand Far Cry 2 gets a thread, the sequel to the top selling jungle-tastic Far Cry(Which is soon to release a movie by the dreadful Uwe Boll watch at your own peril, more info: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0400426/).

Far Cry was originally released in 2004 on the PC, but Far Cry 2 will move to the PS3 and XBOX 360 as well as staying with the PC and is due for release on October 21st 2008(Subject to change).

Game Summary and Main Features:
Summary:
Caught between two rival factions in war-torn Africa, you are sent to take out "The Jackal", a mysterious character who has rekindled the conflict between the warlords, jeopardizing thousands of lives. In order to fulfill your mission you will have to play the factions against each other, identify and exploit their weaknesses, and neutralise their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning and, of course, brute force.

Far Cry 2 immerses players in an entirely new kind of gaming experience, featuring a custom-made video game engine built from the ground up. Players discover a true open world gameplay set in Africa, brought to life by high-definition next-gen technology.

Features:
DUNIA ENGINE - The Dunia Engine was built specifically for Far Cry 2 by the award-winning Ubisoft Montréal development team. It delivers the most realistic destructible environments, amazing special effects such as dynamic fire propagation and storm effects, real-time night-and-day cycle, dynamic music system, non-scripted enemy A.I. and so much more…

REAL-TIME IMMERSION - Real-time story telling, systemic auto-healing, minimal in-game interface are just few of the features that will make you feel the tension of being alone against barbarous warlords that threaten thousands of innocent lives.

WEAPONS OF CHOICE - Choose from a wide range of weapons to make your way to your primary target. Meet the fight head-on with your machine-gun, go berserk with your machete or make stealth kills as a Sniper. If you feel that the atmosphere is not warm enough, light up your flamethrower and let your enemies and everything around them feel the heat.

FAR CRY 2 MAP EDITOR MAKES MAP EDITING EASIER
Yesterday I got a double dose of Ubisoft's Far Cry 2, getting a chance to check out the level editing features of both the console and PC versions of the game. While there are noticeable graphical differences between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions versus the one they had running on a PC you can't afford, all three versions of the game are shipping with the multiplayer map editor, which should allow even the most novice player to quickly create their own, beautiful Far Cry 2 maps. How quickly? Try around 90 seconds.

Yes, the toolset the developers are providing is that fast. Raise or lower the terrain, slap on a texture, and then paint the grid using the collection system, which automatically applies bushes, grasses, and trees to the landscape. A touch of a button takes you down from an overhead view right into the middle of your map, where you can explore your creation or just shoot holes in it with the provided magical machine gun with unlimited ammo. As someone who likes playing with their games as much as simply playing them, it seems like a dream come true.

You don't have to keep things simple either. You can start off with a basic map and then, for instance, raise the water level to turn the whole thing into a swamp. Painting a road on your map automatically shifts the foliage to conform to the trail you blaze. Even something as simple as setting the weather and time of day dramatically changes the look and feel of your map.

The devs showed us a premade map that they claimed took four hours to build using the editor, and it looked like any professional map you'd find in a retail product. A dusty town spotted with run-down shacks, debris like discarded tires and busted vehicles littering the dusty roads of some long-abandoned town. It looked amazing for four hours of work. I can't wait to see what sort of things come out of the community once they get their hands on the editor.

The Far Cry 2 level editor is the sort of additional content that I would gladly pay $60 for on its own. In the right hands it's capable of results that could put even the most seasoned professional level mappers to shame. I was planning on picking up Far Cry 2 anyway, but now I'm going to buy it extra hard. Damn straight.

Those gameplay videos are amazing.
I can't believe those graphics are from the console version and are off screen captures.
It has so much detail - shooting trees and the branches fall off, vehicle damage and repair, weapon damage, fire propagation..
I can just imagine hiding behind some rocks or something with the flame thrower and lighting a whole building on fire.
You always make a good thread HBK ;)
Any word on the release date? All I see so far is Fall.

So far I am guessing October 21 as that is the US date, nothing but October ?? for us so far, so heres hoping a worldwide release date.

Yeah saw the vids a while ago and it looks bloody promising. A free roaming FPS has always been on my want list. Seems the best idea.

I love the idea of being able to pick the time of day to do the missions. So if its a tough, stealthy mission you do it in the black of night.

October and November are looking good if you own a PS3. :thumbsu:
I'm not entirely sure if FC2 will run on my rig, so I'm going to get it on PS3.
Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet and Far Cry 2 all within 3 or 4 weeks of each other, and then 2 or so months later we get Killzone 2.

Looking good for gamers of all descriptions, with all the cross platform games being released, and also gears of war 2 on 360.

Tho it usually is. Fall in the us is money time for gaming.

Not a PC gamer, so I haven't played FC on PC (I've heard it's amazing), but I was a MASSIVE fan of FCI:P on the 360 (I can hear the PC gamers shuddering right now :p).

The MP aspect was great and the map editor was fantastic. I've still got about 80 player created maps on my 360 HD. Some of them were just mind blowing, others were just terrible, but a great feature none the less.

Very much looking forward to FC2.....expensive months are a foot

Almost in reaction to my thread being put up(:p), Far Cry 2 has been given a window for release in the PAL/Australian region, and it looks like being very close to the US date, of the 21st.

FAR CRY 2 DATED
This just in, Cabela’s: African Terrorist Hunt (or ‘Far Cry 2’ if you want to insist on using the actual name of the game) has been confirmed for release in Australia in mid-October, 2008.

Like the previous game, FC2 is a game that occurs over a large environment and it is completely up to you how you want to tackle any given situation. Selecting from one of nine playable characters you’re tasked with eliminating The Jackal, a mysterious enemy who is actively supplying two warring mercenary groups

Having sampled the game at Ubidays 08, we can confirm its awesomeness. After two hours worth of playing Far Cry 2 at that particular event the show attendants politely asked us to move along and see some other games. One hour later they sprayed us with the fire hose. Ten minutes after that security had to put us in a sleeper hold to remove the controller from our hands. Needless to say, were pretty taken by Far Cry 2 and we can’t wait to go on an extended safari in October.

Is it just me, or does 50km x 50km seem kind of small for an open-world game in Africa of all places?
I can't find any info on multiplayer either.

sounds huge to me actually. 50k's mate...if you didn't have vehicles....

In a vehicle sitting at over a 100km/h, you could get to the end of the map in about 20 minutes.
I guess that isn't too bad. It's probably similar size to GTA:SA.
I was expecting bigger for a game in Africa, that's all.

50km x 50km is freaking HUGE. That's a very impressive technical acheivment.

20 minutes though!! That's HEAPS. You can't really expect them to render a sandbox for the entire continent of africa can you!?

GTA San Andreas will be small compared to this. From my memory, San Andreas was 6km x 6km... doing some maths, FC2's map will be approximately 70 times as big as what was available in SA. Crazy!

The only game I could imagine it would be comparable to would be Operation Flashpoint.

I didn't expect the whole of Africa lol. I was thinking that if it was in the desert, then not much detail would be required, and therefore it would be larger than 50x50.
Once I read over my previous comment, I realised that gunning a vehicle across the whole map and taking half an hour is an impressive achievement. Walking across the map on foot would take like 7 or 8 hours.
On that note, I retract my statement. :p

BTW, GTA:SA is MUCH bigger than 6km x 6km. Even GTA:VC would be bigger than 6x6.

After a bit of research, 6km x 6km is correct, but that is absolutely ridiculous.
There is no way that it is 6km long. Imagine running across that whole map, it is much longer than 6km.

Well let's just agree on this, IF GTA:SA was 6km x 6km and that was pretty huge then Far Cry 2 at 50km x 50km is going to be friggen massive.

BTW it takes ages to run anywhere in GTA:SA.

I also initially thought it was bigger than 6km x 6km, but thinking about it, they do pack a LOT into that area (3 cities, desert, airbases, mountain, countryside, etc) so the feel is exaggerated, bigger than it actually is. And I guess when you fly a plane (like the learjet) it probably only takes 30 seconds to get across the entire map.. 6km in 30 seconds = 720km/h so you'd think that's about right?

But yeah 50km by 50km will be rediculously big!

The first review is out, thanks to PC Gamer magazine, and it looks like we finally have a blockbuster to live up to the hype.:thumbsu:

Scoring a fantastic 94%(Out of a possible 100%).
It's Beautiful | Free-Roaming | Utterly Absorbing.
It's Not A Linear Shooter | A Prescribed Story | Going to Let You Go

FAR CRY 2 REVIEW SUMMARY
The basis of Far Cry 2's story telling: Characters and situations are swapped via a software author, its responding to choices made by you the player. Its something that's been on the cards for some time - mostly in research projects - but this is the first high-profile game to use it.

Its nothing less than a revelation. What makes this procedural storytelling cool isn't that you get to play the game lots of times, and see new things happen, or do things in new ways, Its not even that it gives you stories to share, situations to compare with your friends. Its that the game just works and responds to your successes, failures and ****ups.

If you don't like what a guy is asking you to do, then don't do it... If you really like one of your buddies, you stick with him. When the situations force choices on you... By God, its incredible.

After playing Far Cry 2, I am simply unable to go back to straight and simple first person shooters. The game has executed my expctations. Would you, could you, go back to homes with similar gunfights as this, but along a more rigid axis? I think your own expectations are going to rise dramatically.

And I really think you should play this game.

Awesome. Loved the original Far Cry so I was expecting big things from 2. Non-Linear FPS gameplay, I just love it.

From what they mention about procedural storyline where you can really do what you want, with cause and effect to the story, that just sounds phenomenal. It could really be the next big step, a revolutionary leap in gaming.

Can't wait!

From what I've seen of the tech demos, if the consoles can handle this game I'd be seriously impressed
