THE INAUGURAL AFL Women's Grand Final will be held during round one of the AFL season, with the League and broadcasters clearing a Saturday afternoon timeslot as part of the fixture to be released on Friday.

The League has finalised its broadcast deal for the new competition's debut season, with all 28 home and away games to be broadcast live on Foxtel, the official AFL app and AFL.com.au.

Select games will also be broadcast on Seven, with the free-to-air broadcaster winning rights to the Grand Final, which will be held on Saturday, March 25 at a venue still to be determined.

AFL game development general manager Simon Lethlean said the League was thrilled to secure a strong broadcast deal and a Saturday slot for the inaugural AFL Women's decider.

"We decided if we clear out Saturday afternoon, the traditional Grand Final time, and combine that with the excitement round one generates, then that would represent the AFLW competition appropriately," Lethlean told AFL.com.au.

"It's a good result and those broadcasters have production standards they don't compromise on.

"There'll be all the camera angles, commentators, high-definition, and it'll look great."

The AFL has not secured rights fees from Fox Footy or Channel Seven, but both broadcasters will underwrite the production costs for the inaugural season.

Lethlean said September's highly successful exhibition match between the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne at Whitten Oval had played a key role in building interest among broadcasters.

"There's no doubt that helped to get this to where it is," he said.

"It displayed the athletes, their personalities and skills and it was very watchable.

"I think that made everyone sit up and realise there is something here."

Lethlean said the personalities of stars such as Collingwood's Moana Hope had also played a major role in building excitement around the competition.

"(The players) are fresh, excited, grateful for the opportunities that are coming, and more importantly, they've worked hard to get where they are and deserve the opportunity," Lethlean said.

"I reckon the goodwill in the industry permeates because of that and they'll benefit from it."

Its interesting that the league hasnt got anything for the womens rights, but doesnt have to pay production either. This compares favourably to the BBL where Cricket is paying some of the cost of production and getting nothing for the rights.

The broadcasts on AFL.com.au are similar to those being done by cricket on its website - and facebook. Crickets commentators include Jason bennet who does the VFL commentary.

The Western Bulldogs will open their inaugural AFLW season with four home games under lights at Victoria University Whitten Oval.

The Bulldogs host Fremantle in a Saturday night clash on 4 February for round one, in prime time on Channel Seven.

The following three weeks include matches against Adelaide, Melbourne and Collingwood, with a Friday night match a fixture highlight against the Crows.

The Bulldogs will round out the seven-game season against Carlton, Brisbane and the GIANTS, with the two latter matches played interstate.

Director of Football Chris Grant said the Club was pleased with the fixture outcome.

“We are really pleased our players will get the opportunity to open their season with four matches at VU Whitten Oval.

“We think it will give them the best possible chance to start their season well, and think it gives our fans and members a great opportunity to support our women’s team.”

The Bulldogs will feature in four matches on Channel Seven and three on FOX, with all AFLW matches broadcast live on television.

The Fremantle v Collingwood and Fremantle v Carlton games are both double headers with the pre season men's series. Any other games like that?

Is anyone familiar with the Collingwood's olympic park oval? From memory there is no elevation around much of the ground. It seems an interesting place to kick off with a Collingwood Carlton game. I would have thought Icon would have been much better

fair enough re icon for night games...but what about the viewing access? Surely you couldn't get more than 2,000 with any level of comfort when the perimeter is a flat walking track?

There's a concrete terrace and grass embankment on the eastern side of Olympic park, which provides minimal elevation. The other issue is the lack of cover and shade with only very small parts on western side providing this.

Many VFL watches see Victoria Park as a much better venue from a supporters perspective it's easier to see the footy and still has a heap of undercover seating. The lighting at Olympic Park is marginally better than Victoria Park although the main issue all round with Vic Park is the council, so I can't imagine night games being an option there.

So Freo are fav for the flag - but they are only showing one of their games :/

Meanwhile, 4 Bulldogs games are being shown.

Well, this probably explains it...

Spick facilities for the corporates...wouldn't be surprised if we get some terracing by the following season
When it's not booked out for non-football events (food and wine festival etc) the glasshouse and elevated balcony is available to social club members for VFL games and I assume similar will occur with women's footy.
