so. you are basing the night as success because it rained at 4pm and there were puddles on the ground? The AFL knew this a month ago and scheduled accordingly to miss the afternoon showers? I think not. Of course, it's not possible for it rain that hard later in the day. ???

GO Catters
No that was just a coincident. The reason it was at night is 30 degree afternoons with extreme humidity are unplayable and thats a very real possibility in brisbane at this time of year with the storms now around but hot days in between. The second half of this week looks like being exactly those conditions that would of been unplayable during the day.

Selwood - I love him and love what he's done but this is our biggest riddle to solve in my opinion. Can't be allowed to dictate terms - the cliff is approaching rapidly and he cannot play full time midfield for a full (extended) season in 2021. Not sure where else he plays? Maybe HF and rotating for periods in the middle - but that appears to be the role they have in mind for Higgins. Maybe he replaces Dalhaus? Father time waits for no one.

The skipper has been declining for a number of seasons already.
Was obvious at the start of the season for me.
Still a bull and gives his all but he no longer has the polish to his game. His disposal use is very erratic. Probably because his reaction time is fading away. The mind is a willing as ever though.

Im not even sure he will be best 22 next year. the decline was massive this year. I think he is done.

Just read this - I know it's already been acknowledged that Richmond delayed their celebrations after the medal presentation to form a guard of honour to farewell Ablett, but how many noticed they also removed their premiership medals

It's something small, but class to do so

That's really awesome. Don't mind Richmond anymore. They haven't been too bad at all after winning this year.

Aside from being a bit dirty and snipey (which let's be honest most successful teams are) I respect them as a club.
Even Dusty who looks like a criminal is a gentleman on the field and plays with humility and respect.
I do not, in any way shape or form, respect the greater richmond supporters.
They are brain dead scum, generally. Pies supporters with dental plans.

Some Tigers supporters are OK. Unfortunately they're in the minority though.

That's actually pretty impressive. Didn't expect that.

He reminds me a bit of Ablett senior in that way. Very undemonstrative on the field. Just does his thing.

There’s been growing respect from Richmond for Geelong and vise versa lately, feels like a genuine ‘respectful’ rivalry is brewing, they no doubt have it over us right now, let’s see if we can turn the tide.

Yeah, sorry about that.

It wasn't meant to be disrespectful and I really didn't want to sound like a flog. :disappointed:

You have no need to be sorry...your post was respectful and classy.

I was taught that its equally important to know how to lose with class as it is to know how to win with grace. Its a lesson some have trouble with.

The Tigers have on the whole been very respectful (there are exceptions on your board and ours)...see you next year...we'll be gunning for you....

Kolo probably deserved to be dropped for previous game performances,

You are kidding, aren’t you? After quarter time Kolo shut Charlie Cameron completely out of the game in the prelim, and in the semi he beat De Goey.

Reliably informed that #35 was severely impacted by asthma and was struggling in the humid conditions. Was seen on camera a couple of times (I'm told) using an inhaler and anyone who suffers from chronic asthma would know that in the right conditions it can be pretty debilitating. Other people have also commented that when the camera was on him at times he looked pale and was clearly not 100%.

Just to be clear, not suggesting this is the reason we lost, but it might explain why he was kept forward and didn't go into the midfield for extended periods as some would have liked. I thought before the game that for Geelong to win, we needed more impact from Danger than Richmond got from Dusty ...... it takes an even team performance as we all know, but clearly Dusty was the difference and Dangerfield (unfortunately for Geelong) had very little impact. Certainly not enough impact to sway the result our way.

Also, just my 2 cents on a few players.

Gaz - we've all been spoilt but his time was up and as much as we love him, there's no way you can carry a 35 year old in the forward line when he offers little from a defensive perspective. Great if he has the ball - but a liability when he doesn't. Harsh perhaps - but I think it's fact

Harry - Been a ripper player and has given his all. But we can't carry him and Hendo in 2021 down back so one has to go. I think Hendo has a year left in him. Harry looked like a bloke who has just got himself to the line and squeezed every last bit out of himself.

Tuohy - Arguably best 22 but as many have said ... where does he play?. Personally I think he needs to set himself to permanently play as a defensive / bailout forward ... or my preference is that we set him as a defensive run with mid in the same way GWS use De Boer. Not sure where else he fits?

Selwood - I love him and love what he's done but this is our biggest riddle to solve in my opinion. I saw him with an inhaler before the game but that’s all. Not a great sign though.

I got that feeling even during the game. Both teams went hard but there was a level of respect for each other.
No one even tested Gaz's shoulder after he was clearly struggling but stayed out there.

This book is a fascinating read. Especially The early chapters outlining the the rivalries, origins and history of the Victorian clubs. Explains a bit about the social divisions and tribal nature of the supporters and players.

I mean I know he is a very capable forward but surely you get him in the heat of the kitchen from the start so he gets really involved, then you rest him forward at certain times.. what do I know though.

It's a grand final and just like 2019 prelim, patty has an unbelievable good first half and is terribly poor in the second half.

Funny how if you look at the tale of the tape, dusty spends about the same time fwd as danger, I thought danger sulked it up big time in the second half, he showed zero leadership and all he wanted to do was play for free kicks, grand final is commeth the hour, commeth the man, the man plays for the opposition, danger is nowhere near martin, Martin was everything we want danger to be, I can't see us competing for a little while.
A list of players where their best is behind them
Selwood
Hendo
Hawk
Dalhous
Danger
Jenkins
Rohan
Tuohey

Then you have menegola and Guthrie who played out of their skin this year, and won't be as good next year I would think. We were primed for this year, and missed opportunities to have a 5-6 goal lead that really hurt us.

Miers I was critical of earlier this year, did nothing in the game to prove me otherwise, simple miss in the second qtr, was massive, too many times he didn't take possession of the ball to take contact from a tackle instead he tapped the ball on where we lost possession and allowed Richmond to play their chaotic style, then he races fwd, has a player leading but decides to go the hail Mary and go for goal, all he finds was broad I think, it was millionaires football.

Our second qtr domination, is definitely the flag that we let get away

Hawkins? Didn't he just have probably his best season yet?

He did, but average finals and he won't be at that level again

?

QF: 13 touches, 7 marks, 4 tackles, 0.5

SF: 17 touches, 9 marks, 2 tackles, 4.1

PF: 12 touches, 5 marks, 4 tackles, 11 HO, 2.3

GF: 10 touches, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 1.2

Unfortunately, he was rather inaccurate, but 7 goals and 18 scoring shots in 4 finals games isn't average.

Hopefully, we get better entries to him and Cameron helps some of the load he was required to carry.

No one even tested Gaz's shoulder after he was clearly struggling but stayed out there.

Another example of that was the reaction following the Dangerfield/Vlastuin clash - how many on social media were (and still are) calling for Dangerfield to be suspended for somewhere between 6 & 10 weeks for a deliberate elbow to the head, an apparent double action (which really isn't noticeable at full speed) and now calling Dangerfield a protected species as he hasn't been suspended for half of next season

Compare that with the reaction of the players - I can't remember one Richmond player remonstrating with Dangerfield following what happened; so while no one was happy with what happened or the outcome, no one saw a reason to go after Dangerfield either, and surely that indicates an understanding that it was accidental & part of the game.

There seems to be an understanding between players regarding a difference between football actions that cause injury, and acting outside of that - the latter tends to see a reaction from the teammates of the downed player
