If they go after Higgins we know for certain there's no change. They'll be getting a 33 year old to replace a 36 year old. It's nuts.

The motto should also include "We exist to provide a retirement fund for ex-Geelong falcons. Performance guarantees not required."

Agree. Higgins might've been a good pick up 6-7 years ago, but not now.

Everyone could and should be doing it. But they are either not patient and want to give supporters hope now to get memberships or for some weird reason they just gut the joint and want to start all over again.
I agree some of the interstate sides can't do it like that cause they can't hold on to kids.

I recall Scott talking in the early years of his coaching about wanting to avoid what happened in Brisbane, which was falling off a cliff after the multiple premierships. It's possible he reacted too much to that possibility.

I know losing grand finals brings out all sorts of emotions. But this team just dominated the first half of a grand final and were beaten by an awesome team and one of the best individual performances of all time. The idea that our overall approach of drafting or trading has been a massive and obvious mistake is hard to justify. Of course there will be things looking back that we could've done better but to have played the way we did this year we clearly did a heck of a lot right.

A fair chunk of that 07 team arrived before Bomber, and important chunk too, so built from the ground up isn’t quite correct is it.
Who? Scarlett, harley, king and milburn. Thats 4 out of the 25 odd flag winners. and scarlett was on the outer looking like a player who would be sacked before thompsom arrived. King and maybe milburn were the only players already forging an afl career when thompson arrived.

If you were embarrassed, that's your issue, but the team didn't embarrass itself.

GWS last year embarrassed itself.

But, yes, if we'd played Richmond in the prelim, chances are we wouldn't have made the GF.

We are back to being a meme club, handbaggers aka big game chokers.

Losing the GF the same way almost to the number that we lost the PF.

And again down to terrible, reactive Scott tactics.

If people are happy for Geelong to finish top 8 each year but never actually challenge, thats fine, but I remember being proud of our efforts after losses like the 04 PF where we lost to a better team but did absolutely everything we could. Since 2012, we lose mainly due to our own incompetence.

The last few years its been "Oh, look at that obscure selection" or "oh, look at that funny match up/tactic".

Shaun higgins was drafted the season before selwood. Selwood probably should retire now. So should higgins.

Hasn't Cook come out and said it wouldn't be financially viable for the club to do a hard rebuild and be out of contention for 4-5 years?
How does he know that for sure. Are our supporters that fickle? I am not advocating a hard rebuild per se as we agree that is difficult, and no guarantee of success.
Maybe a few less old campaigners being brought in, Some tougher selection decisions a la Hinkley. Braver game plan etc

Morning guys!

Have waited till now to allow some of the emotion to settle. First, great game from both sides in relation to the intent to win. Both threw everything at each other physically and it was awesome to see. People writing the cats off, do it at your peril IMO. Yes you have some aging stars but you have a wealth of talent that judging by this finals series look likely they will step right up. Guthrie reminds me so much of a richmond player, some think he is a decent roleplayer but he has shown this year he is actually a very, very good player and looks primed to take the next step. His game on Saturday, along with Stewart was immense. Both those players are fast becoming my favorite non tiger players.

I was so proud of my players paying the respect due to the little master, that was more then a nice touch. Just a pity he got injured as it would have been awesome to see him one last time in full flight.

I, if allowed just wanted to address the above point. People when they Judge Dusty, they consider him the cream due to his ability to finish and by doing so getting in he right spots to allow him to finish. It appears if you dont watch all his games that he is just benefiting from the boys work up field. That is so unfair on Dusty. He is the one that normally starts the scoring chain and by work rate wills himself in the position to finish. This year, we have not had our starting midfield for most of the year, its been left to Dusty and Shai essentially, Saturday night was probably the first time he was allowed to play his natural game, prior he has been forced to play in the center of the ground to allow us to contest and move the ball and hardly has been able to move forward as without him, our ball movement would slow forward of center.

Anyway, good luck in the off season and i have no doubt now that we have met in the GF we have birthed a true rivalry as I believe we will meet in a few more finals in the years to come and and lets all hope we get to share again the last day in September.
I disagree about the cream comment. He's the full 7 course meal. He singlehandedly turned that game around for you guys. Unbelievable. I've not seen many better games by a player than that. Definitely none that occurred on such an important occasion when the stakes were that high. I don't think enough superlatives can describe what we saw on the night. It was literally godmode. When he's older and plays solely as a forward, he'll be the modern version of Leigh Matthews.

Overall, obviously disappointed, but at the same time, just awed at what I saw. Too good (team and player).

To be honest I'm less angry and upset about that loss than I thought I'd be. We turned up, we played really well and were beaten by an exceptional team with one of the best individual GF performances of recent times. If Martin doesn't play an unbelievable match dragging them back into it at the key moment we probably win and if they're not a team full of belief from winning 2 recent flags we probably win. Yes you can always look at moments and find things we could've done better and there's no doubt that when the game needed to be won they had more confidence and belief which is the difference between having won recent GFs and having lost a lot of recent finals. But ultimately we pushed an extremely good team to the brink, had them on them on the ropes and when it mattered they were good enough to drag themselves back into it by playing some truly unbelievable footy. Sometimes you just lose to a better team on the night.
Exactly how I feel. Well said.

2008 was far worse IMO, it’s one we should’ve won, we should’ve gone back to back. Our dynasty ended after the 2011 flag, ever since then we’ve been rebuilding, and building towards winning another one, our list isn’t formed to create a dynasty, Richmonds is, this is their dynasty, we had a chance to pinch one on the weekend, fell short, but at least it was to a team that has pretty much taken all before them the previous 2-3 years, not like the Hawks who stole one in 2008 before peaking again around 2012/13.
That sounds like a post hoc fatalist coping mechanism you are employing.

Hi all,

Just dropping by to pay my respects.

Yours is a great club and whilst you're no doubt hurting after Saturday you should be proud of your effort this year.

I hope it doesn't sound like a put down when I say that our flag is extra special to me because we beat Geelong. That's not because I disrespect your club, but exactly the opposite. You've been the benchmark in sustained performance for almost 15 years and I regard it as a real achievement to get over you in the big dance.

Anyway, just wanted to say "thanks" for a great GF, well done for a really good year in 2020, and all the best for 2021.

Yeah hot take, had we won on the weekend and popped into the Tiggies board to pay respects, we would be banned and probably copped vitriol. Why are their supporters here again?

Thanks for letting us know it was special beating us, that makes that Grand Final loss that extra bit better.

Back to your board, thanks. Your supporters on this page and social media have been a cancer and the less people have to hear about Richmond the better.

geeez that's harsh, they've been pretty gracious really. I would agree many of them haven't been in the past however.

calm your farm, I don't see an issue with those showing some respect.

So who else had their annual "talk" with their significant other after the loss?

"Why do you care so much?"
"How does it affect you?"
"You should be proud"
"Its just a game"
"Always next year"

It is becoming quite the annual tradition. How do you go about explaining something like that?

Find something they love and destroy it (probably not kids or pets), then say "it's just a <insert inanimate object here>"

She tried. I said let’s postpone it

Disagree with you about Higgins. He is a classy player, gets a lot of the ball and he Is a finisher. If we can get him for a couple of years, great.

So is Duncan. Plus he's a lot younger and already on the list.

Jesus if anybody knows how hard it is to raise money/or keep money coming into the Geelong footy club it's Cook he's had to rattle the tin around more than the Salvos. The man's a Saint.

Yeah, sorry about that.

It wasn't meant to be disrespectful and I really didn't want to sound like a flog. :disappointed:
