We potentially could be 87 will end up in the 50s anyway so getting it to 41 isnt much of an upgrade.
If 41 becomes 35 on the night, and 87 becomes 50s... It's still a pretty big upgrade. We can still use our picks in the 100s or later for the last picks if they come into 50s anyway.

The club might see that differently.
If they dont rate the mid range of this draft (and i suspect they dont) then giving up a pick (25) that they think will bust and letting him go to the draft is at worst a nil all draw. They also might think that by holding out port will get desperate and offer more.

The other point is they may well think that if he has to go through the draft he will back out and sign (and then go wherever as FA next year). Remember hawks probably want to play him fwd which will ruin him and NM are so bad if he goes there he might end up the way of polec in 2 years (i think sav is good but hes the kind of player that needs a good side around him). He obviously doesnt prefer to stay but he might decide to do it if thats the alternative.
I doubt the club is averse to keeping him for 12 months (we will be light on for depth if he goes now) and then he goes for band 1 or 2 compo in a better draft next year (when we will have more need for picks than we do this year).

Ultimately a deal probably gets done but i also wont be surprised if port doesnt up the offer that mackie is prepared to let him go to the draft. Unfortunately not all draft pools are equal and this one isnt.

Its balancing not being the punching bag for a prowling hunter..and being practical. 25 ..especually if we can get a future upgrade is still something we can do something with ... Maybe Charlie Edwards is there if not Hastie or Zakostelsky or Hall or Stevens etc... ... one of our best kids like Dempsey was not in system ...so who knows who we have our eyes on.

Sav has already lost money by not being traded last year (and playing for Geelong this year).
If his request is refused a second time, there is no way he stays at Geelong next year.
Where he will be traded or he will walk.

To counter the Hawks in the PSD, Port will avoid the pre-season and will try to select him in the main draft.
Where the danger to Port is North's plethora of teens picks; albeit North are still trying to trade up to Pick One.

With their annual handouts to North, the AFL is creating a super team that already has more players selected first round than any other club. And, may still end with this year's Pick One and Reid.

So, if Geelong ignores Port’s offer that most pundits consider fair, it takes the risk of contributing to the next super team.

Perhaps then you should have found a way to offer something reasonable last year. You can offer truck loads in cash to the player and then offer a pick in the 30's.

Waiting for sav to go and tings to happen 😂

We won’t take “anything” and nor we should. Pick 25 will form the major part of the deal with some additional sweetener. That’s reasonable compo for him. Gets us back into the middle part of the draft where hopefully we can pick up a good kid.

That or an upgrade for 2024... either Id say would be beneficial.

You can't have it both ways. The club has been lectured by many on here to play some kids through the midfield, and that's exactly what they're going to do.

Holmes & Bruhn are best 23 already, and all of Clark, Knevitt & Dempsey will be up around 15 games next year. Particularly Dempsey, who has a real opportunity over the summer to take Isaac Smith's vacant wing/half forward position.

Sanders, Wilson or Curtain (Very unlikely, but you never know) will run through there too if we pick them up.

If it helps us win a premiership next year then that is awesome, and we'll all be over the moon...but that group's development and goal will be about winning another flag in 2-6 years.

It seems like a long window, and it is, but we haven't done this in a long time. We haven't had a group of kids coming through who will grow and develop together, and have multiple opportunities at winning a premiership.

It's not longer "Gee, we better win it this year or I don't know where we're going to end up" - Which whether true or not, was the narrative spun for much of the last 10 years.

The other thing that's seems too be often overlooked in terms of personnel changes/additions for next season is those that come from within the club and already on our list:

  • Jhye Clark, 1 game this past season
  • Toby Conway, 1 game
  • Cam Guthrie, 6 games
  • Jack Henry, 11 games

Then add in another year of development and pre-season for Dempsey, Knevitt and maybe even a refreshed Parfitt

Suddenly we're looking at a number of players already on our list who didn't play a significant role in 2023, but have the chance to do so in 2024
That is so true, and seems to be neglected or ignored here, no matter how many times it's mentioned.

Cam Guthrie wasn't playing wing. He was on-baller mostly.

Guthrie plays inside and out - he's good in not just being able to get the ball out, and like it when he gets the ball on the outside of the contest also

Smith really wasn't playing wing either and he played mostly from the forward line over the past couple of seasons - he spent the second half of 2022 playing high half forward. The grand final was his first game back on the wing for a few months and that was due to the absence of Holmes. It was similar this year with others preferred as our primary wing options with Smith more cameos in that role

In a normal case yes but this year is different.
The afl has distorted the market by giving north endless compo picks so their p17 and 18 arent worth much to them and there is a lack of kpd around (look at them listing someone like pink) so i cant imagine in a draft with poor depth that he gets past them at 18.
Would sav stay to avoid that? (and go to port in 12 months when hes UFA). I probably would but only he knows what he would do.

No, he would not

Will be interesting to look back on this draft. It may surprise and be better than predicted.
I am in the same camp.
We are gonna see quite a few quality role players came along.
It maybe thin on superstars. But quality players are there to be found.

Every goddam year I read this
The only time someone said it and it was 100% true was when someone in 2000 said "yeah but next years draft is going to be better".

Also with Smith out and Guthrie and maybe a draftee midfielder in, this is really the season Holmes can make the wing his position and go up a tier.

Far too early to call, imho.

The recruiters track draft classes 2-3 years ahead and ive been talking to people in recruiting circles who were saying this (that this year's crop is a very shallow pool and next year's has a lot more quality and depth) 12 months ago. Some things can change with individual names but the overall quality of the pool can be predicted ahead of time.

Similar to Tim Kelly, you'll probably find the money he lost this year is more than made up for in the larger contract offered the second time around

It is about as boo hoo as it gets complaining that a player "lost" money because they had to honour a contract they signed

There's no way Port offered him the six-year $700k contract the media are running with last year after a couple of games down back. Holding him for 2023 was the best thing that could've happened to him.

Probably true. I would say ...considering the negativity about this year , possibly the assessment of the 2023 draft going back 12 months by our club ... next year might not have to do much to be anticipated to be better. And watching the 17future game on GF day ...I certainly feel like there is a good group of talent next year.
