As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

Talking of Danger... The Hump just resonate Danger to me...the way he talks and even looks to a degree. Probably my favourite interview.
Yeah I know… he had me at hello lol 😂. Seriously the kid came across as a ripper. Would love him at the club and he is a mad cat fan to boot.

In the Blitz tradition ..... I will put the curse of turbo on him ..

He will be lucky to play one game.

Lets hope he follows up and proves me multiple B&F's and over 200 games wrong... and still counting.
I am guilty of thinking that Blicavs would not make it when he got to the club.
It can be tempting to write off Rookies before they get a season or two experience.
I love Brad Close, but I would never have picked him to be the player that he is on the basis that he was only a Rookie draft pick.
It is interesting that players can be top 10 picks and be complete failures as AFL players, but a rookie kid, could be near pick 80-90 and go on to have a successful career.
Why is it so?

looks like we have an international arrival.
Confirmed just now that the young Irishman will be coming downunder.
Welcome to Geelong Oisin Mullin
This is good news, even if he ends up being an O'Connor standard he'll be a good get, Geelong the home away from home for the Irish.

Yeah.. I thought that way until i looked at who we grabbed over the past 2 years in Stephens, Knevitt, Willis, Kroeger, White, Bruhn and Bowes to all bolster our inside game... add Clohesy into that mix gives us 7 players under 24 with Parfitt it makes 8.
A player with versatility to play more than one position is a better option. A nice inside/outside player. Speed would be even better.

Cam MacKenzie
Mattaes Phillipou
Elijah Hewitt

With Ed Allan screaming Max Holmes to me. Why? As Denis Denuto said... It's the Vibe.

Ohhh in saying all that.
I think we are most vulnerable at key positions. Buss & Hayes look the most obvious ones.
But for me Josh Weddle is the standout here. Plays beyond his in-between stature.
Secondly i think there is a rare talent out there that could be the steal of the draft in 3-4 years time.
Harry Barnett is a unicorn of a ruckman that has barely tapped into what he has to offer. A rare diamond still uncut IMO.

Seriously if the Swans threw out 14 & 17 for 7. I'd take a Hewitt/Allan and Weddle/Barnett combo.
Anyway enough of that. Draft isn't far away now.
Whatever you are drinking can you share a bit around?

Is that assuming Clark is taken earlier?
No. Clark could still be available with Tsatas now looking likely to slide and be available.

I could be completely off the mark but this is just what I see unfolding (just putting 1 + 1 together... but who knows what curveballs are still in play).

Top 4 looks set so they don't get a mention.

#5 Dons - They seem hot on the Poo and the Poo apparently believes he knows where he is going, so it's likely gonna be the dons (easily could be wrong).

#6 GC - always thought they were gonna land Humprey (who I prob want most) but now they fly off late and make the big trip over to see Ginbey... could that be a shady play to try to get WCE to trade up for Ginbey? Maybe... either way I'm thinking Ginbey or Humprey here (easily could be wrong). Ginbey being a powerful taller big-bodied inside mid does seem a logical option to add to a midfield with Rowell, Miller, Anderson and the dynamic Hollands in the future.

#7 Hawks - stated big bodied mid on radar... the opposite of Tsatas... so likely McKenzie, Ginbey, Clark, Humprey.

So I'm thinking (and yeah I might be way off) that unless the Dons take Tsatas that he will be a big chance of being an option for us...Clark a good chance to be available... Humprey surprisingly a bit of a chance to be available (Lloyd Christmas from dumb and dumber style) and Ginbey slightly less chance than Humprey. Allen would be the smokey but should be available for a Well's special.

Not discounting that if Clark is the guy we still want and a kid St Kilda may want like Humprey/Tsatas is still available (I think Tsatas will be) that we can possibly trade down two spots and still get Clark... But we would need to be confident that WCE (with Ginbey likely goners) won't take Clark.

Or we don't fully love Clark or he is actually gone and still trade down two spots with St Kilda, Saints then take Tsatas or outside chance Humprey and we just take whoever we want most like Clark if avail, Allan, McKenzie, Hollands, Buss + pocket whatever extra we get off St Kilda.

So much to play out, It's a really interesting spot we might be in.

I won't be shocked if GC, Hawk, Geel trade down to a Saints or WCE... It'll make for good live drama.

I do feel Tsatas should be there if we want him and Clark also a good chance (at least one should be avail if not both for us).

All this is speculation... It would be so much easier to work it out if we knew exactly how we rate the key players in question.

High chance I'm way way way off.

Bring on the draft... brain is hurting.

Me too with Blitz and how wrong we all were. To be fair he was like a giraffe in a Geelong jumper early on wasn't he?

Close -what can we say? I rerererere...watched the GF the other day and he is so clean and creative. What a kid.

Those small taps/slaps to hooped jumpers out the corner of his eye, he did it that often in the GF, they weren't flukes. His football brain is genius level, the Einstein of football

Anyone else starting to get strong vibes that Allen will be our first pick?
Very Geelong pick, I.e. high risk:high reward/upside type. Not even invited to draft night (remind you of anyone?).
It is all just smoke and mirrors about us being linked to Clark and Tsatas etc. We are usually tight lipped.
We have a long history of doing this with our early first picks:

I) 2002: Andrew Mackie - didn’t play national u-18s, not invited to draft combine
II) 2005: Travis Varcoe - wiped out for most of the year with a foot injury, limited exposure
III) 2006: Joel Selwood - we all know this story
IV) 2007: Harry Taylor - plucked as a 21 year old from the WAFL
V) 2009: Mitch Brown - not selected in Sandringham Dragons team until a late growth spurt and good school footy
VI) 2014: Nakia Cockatoo - genuine bolter, late late invite to draft night
VII) 2019: Cooper Stephens - did not play in his draft year due to broken leg, highly touted from underage year
VIII) 2020: Max Holmes - genuine bolter, limited exposure yet excellent athletic traits

There are others I may have missed/don’t know their back story.

Exactly this...

Just what I'm hoping for as soon as I heard GC flew off last minute to meet Ginbey and his family at home.

You don't do that If you have made your mind up on taking Humprey.

GC might want and see Ginbey as a more pure mid than Humprey who is more a forward/mid.

If Phillipou and Ginbey lob at #4/#5 it'll mean that at least one of Tsatas & Humprey will be available to us.

Possibly both if talk of the Hawks wanting McKenzie is legit.

Hawks also apparently very keen on the Poo (as are dons) and if the Dons take Tsatas, GC take Ginbey it'll leave the Poo there for the Hawks and Humprey available for us to take or possibly make a juicy pick swap with a team that is dead keen on Humprey (I want Humprey though).

Anyway, I'm not keen on taking Clark over Tsatas/Humprey/Allan... but if the club still wants Clark we could almost trade back 2 or 3 spots and be a real shot at landing him still.

Ginbey and the Poo going before our pick may open up some decent options for us... Or we just take Clark like most people seem to want and be done with it.

It's looking good for us though I feel.

Bring on the draft... Just want it over and done with.

I do agree what happens at 4-6 will determine whether theres a really good slider at 7. This will determine whether clubs come for p7 with big offers and test our willingness to trade it (trade down and try and get someone good at 10-15) or whether we hold our nerve and take clark. The live top 10 will be interesting i can see live trading happening

Draft day flashbacks..

A great draft ... we also took Spriggs at 15, Ezra Bray at 17, and Daniel Foster at 23.
A more complicated story than the tape implies ...
If nothing else, tells us that we don't ever quite know what we are getting, with late picks or with early ones.

Takeaways from the AFL show

Jhye Clark said he firmly believes it’s down to 3 clubs. GC, Haw and us. They are the clubs with the most interest. Did a GC interview today again.

Cats went to WA this week to interview Ginbey. (Presumably popped into the other two’s joint as well)

WC highly unlikely to jump up a spot or two. Will let the draft come to them. StK though is potentially keen.

Closely’s manager confirmed he will be a Cat B next year if he makes it through however there is now a chance he gets bid on even before 40. Has had multiple interviews late this week. Said he wants it to be the Cats given “how much we have helped him” this year.

Tsatas says the 3 clubs he has dealt with the most is Ess, Haw and Geelong. Did an interview here this week.

Haw bloke gave absolutely nothing. Only bit of interest is that they have had offers to move down a few spots for an extra pick(s). You’d think that he to be the Saints. Says they don’t rule anything out.

Phillipou is Dangers long lost brother (media wise). He’s a bit OTT and cheeky but for a very young kid he’s already an incredible public speaker. No ums and ahhs. He’s actually very polished. It’s like he’s already played 200 games. He’s engaging, entertaining and has that similar banter with the hosts as Danger does. He already thinks he knows where he is going on Monday but wouldn’t say.

Thats all very interesting i agree with a lot of it.
I do agree hawthorn might be putting it out there that they will take mckenzie to see if st kilda will get spooked and trade for 6 with them). Maybe carlton will try to trade up and grab him or tsatas?

On clohesy id be surprised if he goes before 40 but this is the type of draft spec picks will go in the 2nd round so its possible so i hope he gets through to us.

Clearly gc are keen on all of clark ginbey and humphrey but i think they are undecided. They wont take tsatas given their retention issues and the fact that he doesnt want to leave vic so if hawthorn take someone else (ie mckenzie or humphrey or ginbey) we will have a very interesting call to make between tsatas and clark (if he gets past hawthorn). I still think if either tsatas or humphrey get to our pick that clubs will be making us offers to trade up..whether we slide back 3-4 spots and gamble that someone we want gets through i dont know.

I reckon philippou goes to essendon personally.

Is that assuming Clark is taken earlier?

They could both be available. If ess take phillipou suns ginbey and hawks mckenzie then clark tsatas and humphrey will all be there for us.
