Good Friday Footy

So I come back to my original point.

How will playing football on good friday prevent believers from practicing their faith?

As far as I am aware the MCG is not a House of God
Its not as if the Roman are standing over the Christians with whips, telling them to get inside the MCG.

If you don't like the idea of footy on GF, then just pretend it doesn't exist.

Good Friday is the biggest load of crap ever. I would rather work. Nothing is opened, they don't put any half decent shows on TV (or any good Foxtel marathons).
I would rather watch Adelaide vs. Melbourne than bored off of my ****.

It's not even a fricken holiday in Italy. That's a pretty Christian country last time I checked.

If you're religious, and believe it goes against your beliefs, don't watch it/go to it/eat meat. It's that simple.

.... us people who do have beliefs should roll over and make way for all the atheists who dont have beliefs.... one day for 'BELIEVERS' to show respect to their faith isnt asking alot is it... after all, you get a day off to spend with family/relax and we get a day off to spend with our families and our religion..

You do not have to go to/watch the footy. Plenty of other denominations are unable to do yet the football is still played and they don't have many complaints.

The orthodox Jews can't watch anything on Sundays. Football is played on Sundays.
Not that long ago it was unheard of to play footy or have any business open on a Sunday due to Christian belief. That has changed.
Many muslims can't drink, pubs still operate and beer is sold at the footy.
Muslims have to fast before sun down during Ramadan month. Football is still played and food is still sold.
Many vegans/vegetarians have convictions in their beliefs just as strong but we don't go around trying to please them (pretty long bow to draw I know).

We are NOT a Christian country. We are (supposed to be) a secular society, even if most of the country is listed as Christian (interestingly enough on the sensis I'm listed as a christian!).

We are not one nation under god. America claims to be, and even they play football on CHRISTMAS!

i wonder if the footy players get a say in this??? im sure many of them of not most would be christian..

I would say this would have been the reason why games haven't been played on religious holidays in the past, half the players wouldn't turn up because of their beliefs.

The question isn't would fans turn up,because they will. But rather are there still enough footballers around who are religious enough to refuse to play on Good Friday?

I AM a Christian (but a moderate, not the flag waving, chest out, holier-than-thou type, and absolutely not a 'fundamentalist').
What you say is perfectly correct. I have no objection to Good Friday Football, especially played at night (the crucifection occurred (by the Gospels) at the ninth hour from sunrise (3.00 PM) so many Christians attend services at 3.00 PM - but no problems with Friday night.

Easter Sunday is the holiest day of the Christian year. I also have no problems with football being played on Easter Sunday

Anyway - back to the topic - to repeat, as a Christian, I have no problems at all with Good Friday footy.

Speak for yourself.

I'm a Christian, and consider Good Friday to be the holiest day on the Christian calendar.

And I would have problems with Good Friday footy.

But that is a personal thing, we live in a society that isn't governed by religion and accept that we have diversity.

If it were to go ahead, it wouldn't surprise me, I just couldn't say whether or not I'd attend.

Have it on a Thursday night, and we avoid this problem altogether. I really don't see why it's necessary to have it on Good Friday, when the Thursday night crowds are quite good.

But it would be your choice whether to attend or not.
As it stands at the moment non Christians are not given a choice

What problem, no one is attempting to stop you worshiping your God on good Friday, are they?

It would be OK if I could buy say a Fillet of Fish at a Macca's outlet, but I would be tempted to go a Meat Pie and that could send me to Hell!
