Coach Has Ken Hinkley Been Found Out?

People love to stick the boots in don't they?
This whole "If you don't win the premiership the season is a total failure" line of thinking is so dumb and means you miss out on so much of the fun that footy offers.

Port had a much better year than anyone expected. Midfield restructured after relying on the Boak/Wines combo for a few years. Unearthed some good talents. A good coach is measured in wins and losses, but also the number of players that get better under that coach - and Hinkley has a long list.

Sure, straight sets exit sucks. But Port are now at the 'missing pieces' stage of list development rather than getting the core structure right.

Agree 100% …

… but the club itself created that monster. It set the expectations with its public 2021 strategic vision of 3 Premierships in 5 years.

That’s what Port fans expect to see.

They have 10 years of missing pieces without rebuilding and will now be a massive problem. They have built a midfield and that’s it . Where is the future spine ? Defence needs a total rebuild quickly

Backline is terrible, Allir is a great interceptor but couldn't stand his shadow.
Their forward line looks good, Marshall and Lord could be a great combo

That's a reflection on Ken and his coaching that many of his young and very talented midfielders are picking up bad and undisciplined acts on field..

Chris Fagan, Fly McRae or Vossy certainly wouldn't put up with/tolerate the crap Rozee and esp Butters dished up last night.
Pretty much bang on. A fish rots at the head. People think it’s pure coincidence that virtually every player in the side looks a shell of what they are capable of in a final?

Has to be the unluckiest ‘star coach’ in history, doesn’t he?

Unless they do an about-face on Boak, after last night it’s looking like Ollie Wines will be the sole survivor from the 2013 list.

Poor Kenny™ with the misfortune of turning over a decade’s worth of draft picks and recruits who all crumble at the pointy end in oddly similar ways, while two-thirds of the rest of the league qualify for a Grand Final at minimum.

Port supporters need to realise that this is bigger than just them and their club. Supporters of the 17 other clubs have a vested interest in seeing the great Ken attain premiership glory, he's OUR coach and he's here to stay. Get behind him, he's got this.
Yeah they are really quite selfish aren't they

Not just that, Ken seems to condone/not discipline his young stars, like that unseemly petulant act from Butters towards the PAFC water girl.

That kind of crap needs to be cut out from your young guns ASAP

Probably why the players love him so much, they get away with whatever

Bingo. It also greatly aids his job security.

Contrast to other career coaches who achieved similar highwater marks who have been and gone — Eade, Wallace, Craig, Ayres, even Walls and Choco with their flags — all hard taskmasters who eventually rubbed too many people the wrong way and paid the price when on the downswing.

Hinkley doesn’t do that, as the recent club social media barrage of pics of him cuddling and close-talking his players, and the strident defences of him in the media, showed.

Rather than taking the opportunity to put the bullet in him when the justification arises, he has enough relationship capital to survive through to a position of safety.

Midfield very good but still raw
Forward line ok to good. Still need a good small quick I reckon
Backline needs total overhaul. Way too easy to score against.
Port never rebuild properly which is the main reason they never get there . I actually think the issues are more list development/ management than coaching

I don't think you can blame list development, they're developing great players

Is Hinkley now the longest serving coach at the one club without making a Grand Final? I‘m pretty sure Brad Scott had that honour at North Kens been at Port longer now.

Yep. Took that last year.

Went clear of Terry Wallace (WB/Rich) in second place for outright games coached without a GF last night, and will take the all-time mantle off Bill Stephen (Fitz/Ess) in Round 11 next season.
