Autopsy Hawks: 30 minutes not enough for 4 points...

And how did we get slaughtered in the middle. By one Goldstein. I get really annoyed here by posters who do not understand the value of a good tap ruckman. Oh they're too slow. Small players run off them. The side would be better with no rucks. Blah blah blah.

BB is a very good ruck but his real strength is his marking.

A quality tap ruck is worth his weight in gold.

I heard a rumour somewhere that some ruck got 56 hit outs yesterday. I wonder who that was.
If Ceglar is back soon, I wouldn't mind seeing him/McEvoy partnership with one of schoey/Tob. At least we would one contested marking option forward most times

Inconsistency is a hallmark of a young, re-building side like ours. Even in both of our losses this year we showed great fighting qualities to come back from big margins down. To me this augurs well for the future. We’re not there yet, but we are definitely on our way back to contention.

Shoe for TOB please. He improves our fwd structure immensely

Really happy for Mirra, but I just don’t see the long term value there. Hope he transitions out soon and becomes great depth for us

Please don’t bring Langford or WX back in.

Would like to see JOR get a run at it just to see if there is anything there. Surely he gets a chance if his body holds up

Goldstein - turned back the clock. What a first half from him. Just destroyed us completely. Wow

That non mark to big boy was the most infuriating decision I’ve seen this yr, and that in itself is a massive statement. Was in utter disbelief how that happens in a professional game

Rough down tonight but he’s a champ will bounce back
Silk will be a welcome sight to behold next week

Can throw a blanket on about 4-5 guys to make way, but Timmy needs to be first in line. Not writing him off entirely but he needs a spell for now. One good game in a smashing isn’t enough

These games happen when you have a younger side. We fought back which is at least something. North prob not as bad as everyone initially thought too
Not all doom and gloom ppl, just a down game/ a half of football that cost us badly

You do realize we have put out the oldest team each week so far this year?

Yeah I actually didn't think he was a bad as people are screaming about.

People thinking Brand would have done better haven't watched Brand play IMO.

Frawley was fine after the onslaught which was more about no pressure being applied up the ground than Frawley (and whoever else was minding Brown) being terrible. I'd have had Brand in instead of Mirra. Not a knock on Mirra, but just needed Brand's height more.

While Burton had little impact again, I thought he showed better signs when he was involved than any of his previous games this year. In his earlier games I struggle to think of anything useful he did and looked to lack composure when he had it. He didn't have it much yesterday, but thought he used it better when he did. Still, might be best if he's left at Box Hill for a couple of weeks to build his confidence back up a bit.

As a few observant posters noted North thumped our midfield in the first half where a rejuvenated Goldstein gave their onballers an armchair ride. Unfortunately that meant our defenders were under the pump from the start and understandably looked a bit rattled. Some pressure applied from our midfield would have helped but it was non existent.
The third quarter turn around was meritorious but any chance we had of applying scoreboard pressure dissipated when we continually played to North's defensive strengths by bombing the ball in high and long to the advantage of Tarrant and Daw. We have seen this in the past against teams like Geelong where Taylor et al regularly out marked our forwards who excell on the lead not in contested marking.
However we have made a better start than last year with a list that has really only added Impey and a few late pick draftees. The return of Silk and Ceglar may help to give us a bit more pressure in the midfield and forward half plus greater marking power if we choose to play two ruckmen.
It was not a great day at the office but not the end of the world.

Played like absolute cowards in the first half, was pathetic and disgusting.
I think I heard myself mumbling something into my beer during the first half that went along the lines of " will somebody just start a fight" then realised this isn't the 80's and felt kind of sad.

Sorry mate, I was in perfect position to watch this live and it wasn't a mark. The north player, slightly, had his hands on the pill first. Live, I felt it was North's mark or perhaps a ball-up. B

Fair call that

Sometimes think those average age lists can be quite deceptive though. Have a few 30+ in your team and it really can bump it up

Thanks for sharing what it was that you observed but for once watching at home proved more telling than actually being there. The north player never had more than one hand on the ball at any time and never controlled it, replays and slow-mo showed this to be a clear mistake by the umpire no matter how they spin it after today's review.

Unfortunately umpires don't have the option of a slow-motion review. Live, it never looked like McEvoy's mark. So to consider it reprehensible is a bit much.

You mean despite BB coming from the side to klunk it clearly with both hands and bring it to ground over a player who had only one hand on it......wasn’t a mark?

In no mood to be argumentative so I'm more than happy that with the benefit of replays I know and so do most of the viewing public that the ump got it wrong so I move on, along way on.
Going to be a long week on here if we have to cut and dice that decision, look at it like a speed cam infringement, your recollection of events and the umpires for that matter doesn't match the photo.

Sure. Is there a link to the mark? I can't find it anywhere and do admit I haven't seen the replay.

It certainly hasn't been raised as the worst decision of the year from anywhere I can find.

Cousins doesn't have to handball it though, was poor in every sense.
The funny thing was Duryea had the North player stone cold in the air and could have waltzed
around him straight into goal. Instead kicked it out of bounds.

I can't blame cousins for handballing; a young player and gets the call to handball from an experienced player (and ?coach favourite) you will give it off every time.

I really dislike North but they are a reasonable team and they have a crack. A couple years ago they were showing signs of being flag material, and it’s probably very disappointing for their fans that they missed a window where two pretty ordinary sides have won a premiership.

It was good to see Clarko acknowledge North in the presser including the big wrap for Cunnington. I also liked how realistic he was about how these games happen and how Brad Scott will be having the same issue along the way. Always feel with Clarko that we have the absolute best possible at the helm.

(Unlike the keyboard warriors cutting loose in here... it’s amazing how everyone looks crap when the other team is on fire, isn’t it?)

Oh and big points for the umpires today, that McEvoy non-mark was so funny it completely transcended the game state and cheered me up.

The other funny ones were decisions that nominally "benefited" us
- the below the knee contact to Hardwick who jumped over the north player who clearly got to ball first - got a 100% BS call from both north and hawks supporters where I was sitting
- the 50m penalty which recalled the ball as Issac was running away with it which gave north time to set up in the 1st Q (before we had gotten blown completely away)

100%.. I don't know what this other bloke is on about, at the ground and amongst even North supporters (who where laughing), it was BB's mark every friggin day of the week and yesterday. Pretty significant time to.

There was a bit of spark after Mirra got cleaned up into the fence (although by comparison to other clean ups it wasn't as bad, I think the north player at least made contact in the field of play)
