hawks round 2 v the roos

ok hawkers,we had a great win to start the season and this week we are up against a northmelbourne team who impressed strongly against a dissapointing adelaide...we have two players in contention for selection this week...holland and osbourne...dixon may be rested due to some knee soreness and ries is under a clowd from concussion.. so this is my team to take on the roo boys...

B: osbourne graham beaumont

HB: smith jacobs croad

C: vand'berg crawford lekkas

HF: hodge holland barker

F: williams thompson brown

Foll : everitt , mitchell , ries ( if he plays ) otherwise, cox..

inter : cambell , mccabe , lonie , clarke...

to me it looks a good line-up...next week will be tougher for the selection board as ries will be fully fit again, dixon should be recovered and barlow, greene and bateman will all be ready...
for mine it would be barlow in for lonie and greene in for clarke..
see how cox goes otherwise bateman is in...

can anyone shed some light on how ries is going after his knock..?.

north will certainly prove to be tougher opponents than the dees and we will have to play well to get over them...

GO HAWKS...................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sheeesh, you're a tough critic Lasher.

Thought Lonie and McCabe were both excellent and I'd be surprised to see either start on the bench. No Osborne this week IMO.

Assuming Dixon misses, it'll be interesting to see if Barker and Holland both get a gig.

john d ,,, i agree that lonie and mccabe played well, i havent dropped them from the team and i would probably start mccabe on the ground and have osbourne on the interchange because he's returning from injury...but osbourne is a great player and deserves his spot back in the team...i think its awesome that our injury list is declining and selection will be tough...
holland and osbourne both played well for boxhill aparently ...
dixon is only a slight chance but if he's sore, why not rest him...

when we have a full list to chose from i would say our best 22 would be this:

osborne hay graham

smith jacobs croad

beaumont craw lekkas

hodge holland barker

williams thompson brown

everritt mitchell vandenberg

ries,bateman, lonie dixon...

now we have such a good list when everyone is fit some guys will miss from time to time...pending on the opposition and weather conditions...those not in the above side which could get a game anytime.....

cambell,barlow, mccabe,green,cox,clarke,picioane,sewell,scott...

makes you think the boxhill hawks should have another crack at the flag.....

Barlow is a lot lot lot better footballer than Lonie. He is definetly best 22.

He's going to have to break back into the side because of his lay-off.

On last year's form, he's in my starting 18.

I think Robbie Campbell will be in the 22 for most, if not all of the year - Thommo to stay forward (pinch-hit in the ruck at best), and Everitt to swap ruck duties with Robbie, as per Saturday.

Sorry, not that I want to but I have well founded doubts about injury prone Holland, not because of his proven ability as a CHF, but because the Hawks need to consolidate in all KPP's.

For some seasons now Dutchy's cameo appearances in the team for a game or two before going out for a spell of weeks gave me the horrors. Should this pattern emerge again over the next month, I say enough is enough. Our team has, IMO, its greatest depth for some years and amongst all that there should be someone who will stand-up consistently at CHF. Sticking to anyone who is an aging worn-out hack could impede our premiership chances.

CHF is so vital in the Hawk's game plan of direct down the corridor play so, therefore, it is important to have a player who will be a regular consistent performer in this position (and for that matter all other KPP's).

Okay, fine, give Dutchy another chance this coming Saturday in the benchmark game against North but as I said if it is to be the same old story with him - enough is enough.

All that said, I wish him luck and hope he can string 18 or more quality games together, as an in form and consistent Dutchy will be a great asset for a list which on paper looks the goods.

i actually think its soooooo good to have a multidude of players to chose from now...its been a while since the hawks list has been so long, healthy and promising......i think this year is definatly the year we have to start proving ourselves to the rest of the comp....we should settle for nothing less than a top 6 berth and have a good crack in the finals...it will be important to finish above the interstate teams even though our finals record interstate is not too bad...we have a couple of good bench mark games coming up...port adelaide in adelaide and the lions in brisbane...

Use Dutch as a pinch hitter from the bench. Put him on a flank or forward pocket with licence to go flat out for 10 to 15 minutes.

If he can take 3 or 4 marks inside 50 durirng that period it would be very unsettling for the opposition.

Work it in with our rotations to get good effect, ie with different players in the centre, alter the forward structure to suit their strengths and weaknesses.

Agree jj flash. I think the Dutchy of old will only been seen in short spells from now on. He just can't do all the things he used to. The one thing he does give us that virtually no other forward does is the ability to kick goals from outside 50. If he's used well I think he can contribute positively to our season. I feel for balance it's probably little use having Thommo, barks and Dutchy all on the forward line at the same time. Lack of mobility would be a real problem.

Yes saaam, agree, crazy to compromise our situation from last week belting the Demons - the small forwards did so well - too many slower talls on the ground could be a hindrance. Cant see Thommo having too longer spells on the bench though.

the emergance of williams and the switch from back to forward of brown ( i think due to the recruiting of croad, beaumont and jacobs )has been good,it takes some pressure of thompson,so does the marking ability of spider, especially when barker, holland and barlow are all injured.....we have some good running goal kickers but have struggled with good marking options due to injury.....still have'nt any news on dixon or ries...???? will they play etc...

We didn't get to see Spider and Thommo much last year. Thommo is quite possibly the best "impact" ruckman on his day in the AFL, big call I know but he is awesome in full flight. Spider is a more than adequate forward and a very nice kick for goal. If we can get a full year out of them both, I think we will be a dangerous side this year.
Gotta love Browny though, the guy is so gutsy and can play too.
Not yet sold on Willo myself, but the signs are good.

i stand corrected on this but if you are picked in the starting 18 then you kinda have to play; this is what Ries has being; in the fp; so it looks like Ries will be playing :D Dixon (dutchy and osborne other worthy mentions) picked on the bench so they could be a last min. decision.

to sum up: Ries should be a yes (if i understand the rules correctly)
Dixon 50/50
