Heath Shaw vs Sam Gilbert

Heath Shaw is a fantastic defender. He is also a better player than Sam Gilbert.

For those who say Heath Shaw can't defend. One of my favourite football going moments was the year that Heath Shaw one the Anzac medal. After years of being tormented by James Hird, Shaw lined up on him and gave him such a bath that the Essendon supporters around me were begging for Hird to be movedaway from him, as Shaw was not only stopping him by winning every one and one, but also running off him and creating havoc. I actually think that he is at his best when he is given a star to beat.

So Shaw is a better player then Gilbert because he beat a great player once when they were 34, in their last season and past their best? Does that make him better the Hird too?

Have to agree with the collingwood blokes, Shaw is actually a very good defender when he is given bigger responsibility.

Ive had the oppotunity to watch him closely from my dreamteam coaches chair last couple years when he has been on very good small forwards and he can destroy. When you are as good rebounding though you dont normally get these responsibilities.

My opinion is he is a better defender them Gilbert and a slightly better rebounder.

Shaw defensive work is alright, probably not as good as Collingwood fans are suggesting.

Shaw's biggest problem is when a purely defensive forward is played on him, he struggles to get away from the tag.

I actually agree with this.
To this stage of their careers Shaw has Gilbert well and truly covered.

Pretty much this, Gilbert looks way better than he actually is because of the Saints gameplan, similar to Dawson.

If either of these players were playing in another team they would struggle.

This^^^. Shaw is one of the better rebounding defenders in the comp and has been for the past 4-5 years. Has very good delivery, is good in the air and actually can defend. Can get touched up but so do all defenders every once in a while. Gilbert has been good for 1 YEAR. Everyone needs to calm down on Gilbert. Yes he can play and was stiff not to be AA, but shaw has him covered.

****ing hell I thought I'd stumbled into Bizarroworld before the last half a dozen posts in this thread. Heath Shaw is comfortably better than Sam Gilbert, mind you he's also got several years more experience. Shaw's main issue is dealing with a forward tag, but given the Pies have a better spread of talent these days he's less likely to have to deal with one week in, week out.
