Today was for me a watershed, it was the crushing realisation that we are no better now than during the dark days of teh Shaw tenure in 97-99. Our skill level, decision making, gameplan and general football ability is shatteringly poor. Essendon are cr@p and no better than us at the end of teh day but they comfortbaly beat us. We are in a hole and really I cant see us challenging the top teams again under MM. I was happy MM was back to his feral intimidating best at 3QT but really he should have been that way late last year. As long as we dont win the wooden spoon, I ll be happy to take the early picks on offer, cos at the moment there is nothing exciting about the pies. Its gonna be a while before we relive the glory days of 02-03

Surely you don't cling to two Grand Final losses as the 'Glory Days'?? You were a team that played well together and a lot of things fell into place for you, but Glory Days? I have a feeling unless Collingwood has a major clear out of players who lack big game accountability then you are in for long time in the wilderness. You can't keep going into big games and being consistently let down by the same players who got you there in the first place. Two Day GF's; a night GF and the last few Anzac Days are as big as they come and Collingwood fails every time. Cole, Obree, Shaw, Woewodin, Walker are always in your starting 18 but if you had a list with any sort of depth to it, they would be lucky to get a game.

Yes , I know Shaw had 30 touches today....but how many of them were really effective. Don't kid yourself. Woewodin panics under pressure....fails to hit targets and makes too many clangers. The others are B grade at best.

You have a very talented full forward who whilst not quite in the top echelon, is certainly a good player. He looks athletic. Why not change his role? Make him an onballer or even a rebounding half backer. It's not as if he kicks a lot of goals.

Trav Cloke looked like a veteran today. You might have something to build on there. You miss Fraser but you can't rely on Buckley coming back to what he was.

You're going through some pain anyrate, why not clear out the dead wood and rebuild from scratch.

A very very very very very very very long time mate. No good younsters goodbye collingwood

I dont think we will see you on the collingwood boards tomorrow

If we are as bad as we were in 1999 we could play in a grand final in 2008. We are a long way ahead of 1989 though. We have half a dozen or so to cull and that's basically 1 draft intake. We need to get out midfield fixed pretty desperately but slot Buckley in and a few future problems get wallpapered for now. Add Rocca to Monday and plenty begins to look different. 3:2 instead of 1:4 for a start. If Travis, Iaccabucci, Rustling and Eagan make it and we are looking ok. That's pretty hopeful but it’s a good blend to add to a list. It's pretty fickle this socialist, reverse merit rewarding, regulated player market thing they call a competition.

We are 2 good drafts from having a pretty good list. They are the 2002 and 2003 drafts we blew. Hopefully 2004 is the first and then 2005 is the next to get us back on track.

Don't kid yourself. Shaw had a grand total of 3 clangers. Same as one guy named James Hird.
Cole is a very talented youngster and will have a good career.

2 more goals then your leading goalkicker this year mate and only 3 under the leading goalkicker in the AFL.

Other than those two you make some ok points.

geez, maybe you should have used the word "contender" in the title. it would have attracted less trolls.

2 to 3 years, if your recruiting takes off in a big way. a class act like malthouse will turn a few top draft picks and what you have (minus some serious dead weight) into an OK team in a single off season. to get back to the top, however, you need some sustained good recruiting and trading.

stop upgrading your facilities and hire another bunch of recruiters. get a collingwood guy in every victorian, west australian and south australian country town on the lookout for the next guns.

spare no expense eddie, its the club's great modern failing. theres no salary cap on the football department.

Literacy doesn't seem to be high on the agenda in the South Australian education system...

I agree. If we have so many $$$$, lets spend that money to get the very very best people behind the scenes to give us a shot at getting the up and coming players that can then inturn give us a shot at a flag. Simplistic ideas yes but it may go a long way towards being a power club....on the field

Honestly about the same time as Essendon
Behind Hawthorns, Footscray,Richmond
Need to make the hard decisions its hard when you havent got good draft picks when you made the GFs
You will get some good ones this year and if the Cloke Boys do what there supposed to you might be 4 to 5 years away from having another crack.

With the current draft system it does not take long to rise up the ladder again. We won the wooden spoon in '99 and 2 years later we made two grand finals. Richmond were shocking last year and are looking quite good right now.
