How long does Hayden get?

Being run out a lot as well as constantly slicing the ball because he is no longer able to get the bat down fast enough is a sure sign age has him gone. He's lost his speed in all its forms.

Gorn after Sydney.

Forget about Sydney, sadly the time has come unless he can get a sparkling century in the second dig in Melbourne. He shouldn't have got out to that ball today, it was the sign of a player who's reflexes have let him down. He is playing like a 37 year old.

Call me harsh, but even if he scored a hundred in either the second innings or in Sydney, I still wouldn't take him to South Africa. Don't pick players on how they performed in their last test, pick them on how you expect them to go in their next test. And sadly for Hayden, a hundred would be an aberration, not the return of the norm.

**** if we lose this match i dont think he'll get another test at all.

It is clear on that wicket we needed more runs.

If we lose the selectors will say "**** it, Hayden, out". Theyll bring in a in form opener and give him 5 tests before the Ashes.

Mate. You forget one thing. Matthew Hayden is one of the "boys". He's a protected species and will never be dropped. If you're not one of the "boys" ie: Brad Hodge you get dropped in 2 seconds.

Australian selecting has always been random/inconsistent.

Let us hope he calls it quits in a post-Melbourne press conference, and goes out in style smashing an unbeaten ton to win (or at least draw) us the series in Sydney.

Been a great, but even the greats must wind it up one day.

Hayden's time has come.

Get ya tickets to Sydney to say seeya to the big fella. Been a great player for Australia but I think his hand will be forced in the New Year.

By one of the boys, do you mean one of the cricketing greats? Because I reckon it's fair enough that they get a better run than the rest.

He has had a better run. Do you think if Simon Katich had scored 46 runs for the summer coming into this match that he'd be playing here?

Hopefully he is not deluded enough to continue on until dropped, but his god bothering ways seem don't suggest a firm grip on reality.

Better if he announces his retirement before the Sydney test to at least give the illusion of going out on his terms. If he manages to make runs it will be a fitting send off.

Hayden has had more than 2-3 Tests of poor results, and unlike a newcomer who is finding their feet, it is the way he has been batting that is concerning. He clearly isn't up to the pace of the game anymore.

When he does depart, i hope that there is the same headhunting (after 2-3 tests of poor results) as there has been with Hayden. Will they continue to hunt for a replacement if the first one doesn't work out ?

You do realise age is not on his side, don't you? And the way he's going his average will fall below 50. Hawthorn didn't exactly entertain Michael Tuck for another year or two did they?

I think that Hayden should retire after the Sydney test because it would be disappointing if he was forced out either at the end of the summer or after the South African series.

I Love seeing players retire on the top of their game like Langer, Warne and Gilly last summer.

If Hayden still has the enjoyment and wants to give more to the game he should continue playing first class cricket and add experience to a domestic team or make money like langer, gilly and warne playing in India.

I think that Hayden has been one of Australia's greatest opening batsmen and i think that he has the capability to still make runs but you really have to wonder why he doesn't look at other avenues for playing cricket. He has nothing left to proove in the baggy green.

I would also love to see Hughes get a game. He is an exciting talent and is going to be a gun.

Ian Healy might disagree. Australia's best modern gloveman and pushed aside for Gilly. In hindsight, it was the right call, but the selectors showed no mercy to Healy.

It is all over. I am a huge fan of his but I hope the selectors tell him Sydney is his last Test and he actually retires himself.
