I have my ups and downs like many. Sometimes, when in a rut, I can comfortably drink 3-4 canadian clubs (double shots, mind you) of an evening - if I'm with friends I can polish off much more.

I don't have an incessant need or feel a dependency but do feel a sense of peer pressure. Not in the sense of it being real delivered pressure, but in the way others have said it's almost like an expectation amongst certain circles. There's also the same circles that kinda look at you weirdly when you say you're not drinking, or don't want to over-drink etc.

I would say though in the past few years, the weeks or months when drinking is low is less than perhaps it was before that. Perhaps there's also the as we get older and have more disposable income there's a higher ability to spend more on alcohol be it out or at home. Nicer bottles of wines, whiskeys, etc etc.

I'd happily be a one or two here and there kinda guy, though with my current tolerance level, that wouldn't really register for me in that relaxing type of way that you might hope.

I'm what would be called a binge drinker. I don't touch alcohol for a month or so, then I go to some occasion and have 1-7 drinks in one session. If the occasion is a catch-up at the pub, it's one drink and if it's a party, it's towards the 7 drink mark.

One or two drinks every 2-4 weeks for me. Used to drink more a couple of years ago but not anymore and won't go back. I've never had a problem with alcohol though apart from the odd hangover or two many years ago. Must be horrible for people who do.

Have drunk most nights for several years.

Mine's an odd one, I drink because I like the taste etc. I can easily go without though at the same time. The last 3 months I've gone back to just drinking on weekends.

It's not a 'I need a drink', I just enjoy having one.
Very similar. Enjoy the taste of a beer or red wine (very very rarely touch spirits, learnt my lesson there and don't enjoy the taste). I might have a drink most nights one week, but then barely touch alcohol the next. Occasionally have a big one, but definitely far less frequent as I get older and actually want to make the most of weekends.

I also make sure to get a decent sleep every night of the week, exercise almost daily and generally eat well. I am the healthiest I have been since high school, when I didn't drink at all.

I understand not everyone can only stop at a couple, have health impacts from alcohol and also appreciate people that don't actually enjoy the taste of alcohol; technically I'm probably classed as an alcoholic some weeks, yet remain as healthy as ever. If alcohol is having negative impacts on aspects of your life, make a change; if it isn't, I see no reason to change.

Yeah OK the catch is it IS kind of boring not drinking and you don't get that enjoyable temporary relaxation from it anymore. BUT you do feel physically and mentally far, far better and of course save loads of money.

Not counting but I don't think I've had a drink for around 4 months and whilst you do sometimes miss it I think the downside of it massively out weighs the short temporary upsides.
I recently had a mates Bucks weekend and on day 2 stayed completely sober, but enjoyed myself just as much as the night before when I drank. No way I could do that in my early 20s, but something that has come with maturity for me.

It fluctuates, I usually take 2-3 months off a year to focus on fitness and life goals, but being clean in body and mind gets a bit boring so I mix it up when everything is on track, then eventually I get sick of drinking and stop again.

Usually 5-10 std drinks but in my peak can hit 10-20 standard drinks a weekend, that's usually in winter when food and wine become so much more tempting and a late night whisky calls my. Name.

Over summer I hardly touch it, clean my act up, drop a few winter kgs and go back round again next winter.

The posts on this thread are truly insightful. I do think the ingrained culture of drinking is changing, not to say dont drink but enjoying alcoholic drinks as they should be. I do miss the taste of beer.

For the record when I have been out and about with drinkers I have never been pressured after saying I dont drink, no follow up questions, people are seemingly much more open that some dont drink.

What do people who don't drink do to socialise? I mean do you still meet friends at the pub but just drink a softy?

I am not sure where I would catch up with friends in the afternoon/evening if it wasn't at a pub.

i can't fathom why a grown adult moderates a football forum. we're all different.
One of the better snapbacks I've seen on this forum.

When I was not drinking I would just get water from the bar.

So you go for a walk with a group of mates? Thought only women did that.

But where do you meet socially, excluding going to someones house.
Yeh can do, I’ve gone for runs, kick the footy, have a coffee.

Meet at a location for a walk or a kick.

Feels to me like it says a lot that you can’t think of anywhere to meet up with some mates other than the pub.

A couple of times a year I'll have anything from ten to twenty drinkies. And one or twice a year I'll have a proper bender with every drug I can get my hands on and drink non-stop for 24 hours, or I'll travel somewhere or go to a festival and get absolutely poleaxed for three or four days in a row. I don't touch alcohol outside of that, I don't really see the point.

Classic "I drink to get ****ed" I guess, maybe four or five times a year total.

Honestly this makes far more sense to me than the “I’ll have a glass or two of wine every night” crew

Going for a kick of the footy, a hike etc is all normal imo. Just never heard of any group of guys going for a walk to socialise.

I go to the beach, to the snow to a million other places with friends but as an unplanned meetup, after work, a Friday night, where else do you go? The cabaret?
