Scott Pendlebury is one of the greatest AFL players of the modern era, with exceptional skills, leadership, and consistency. However, whether he would make every club's best 22 depends on several factors:

Why He Would Be in Every Team’s Best 22:

✅ Elite Skills & Decision-Making – One of the best users of the ball under pressure.
✅ Leadership & Experience – Premiership captain, multiple-time All-Australian, and record-breaking games played.
✅ Versatility – Can play in the midfield or off half-back.
✅ Consistency – Still performing at a high level even in the latter stages of his career.

Possible Exceptions:

While he would improve nearly every team, some clubs with incredibly deep midfields (e.g., Collingwood, Melbourne, Brisbane) might need to balance team structure. However, given his ability to play in multiple roles, he’d almost certainly find a spot.

Verdict:

Yes, he’d almost certainly be in every club’s best 22, even if his role varied based on team needs.

Every team in the competition would find a spot in their best 23 for Pendlebury with his skill, experience and leadership.

Meanwhile, others are nominating Tyrell Dewar, and he just 'needs a few more runs on the board...'

1. No, they wouldn't, he's cooked.

2. The only person nominating Dewar is a Fremantle supporter, so he must be doing ok :thumbsu:

bro GPT models just feed your own biases, I can prompt it to tell me that Jesse Motlop would have a spot in every teams best 22

I asked it if a 37 year old Pendles would be best 22, and it gave me an entirely different output

It's just how GPT's work
Scott Pendlebury at 37 is still a highly skilled, composed, and experienced midfielder/half-back, but he’s no longer the dominant force he once was. That said, his footy IQ, leadership, and ability to control games mean he’d still be best 22 in most teams, though probably in a more defensive/playmaking role rather than as a primary midfielder.

Teams Where He’d Still Be Best 22 (Even at 37)

✅ Collingwood (obviously) – Still a crucial leader and distributor off half-back.
✅ West Coast – Would walk into their midfield and provide much-needed experience.
✅ North Melbourne – Midfield still developing, and he’d add leadership.
✅ Hawthorn – Similar to North; would be a perfect on-field mentor.
✅ Richmond – Would start half-back or midfield with their aging list.
✅ Adelaide – Midfield lacks elite experience outside Laird.
✅ Essendon – Would add composure and leadership to a shaky midfield.
✅ Fremantle – Could play half-back or inside mid alongside Serong and Brayshaw.
✅ St Kilda – Would fit Ross Lyon’s structure perfectly in a disciplined role.
✅ Western Bulldogs – Could replace Bontempelli in midfield rotation and play half-back.

Teams Where He Might Be Best 22 But Not a Lock

🟡 Melbourne – Would be depth behind Petracca, Oliver, and Viney but could play half-back.
🟡 Sydney – Wouldn’t replace their main mids but could play a JPK-type late-career role.
🟡 Port Adelaide – Midfield is stacked, but he could be a handy half-back option.
🟡 Brisbane – They’re stacked in midfield, but he’d be depth for a Zorko-like role.

Teams Where He Might Not Make Best 22 (But Would Still Play Games)

❌ GWS – Already have elite mids and playmakers off half-back (Whitfield, Ash).
❌ Geelong – A similar situation to Dangerfield; they’d probably go younger.
❌ Carlton – Hard to squeeze into a midfield with Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, and Hewett.

Verdict:
At 37 years old, Pendlebury is still best 22 in at least 12-14 teams, especially those needing leadership, composure, and defensive playmaking. He wouldn’t be a primary midfielder anymore but would still contribute significantly off half-back or in a rotation role.

'Pendlebury wouldn't get a game at Carlton'.

That is frigging hilarious.

Not sure if he would make our best 22 as he wouldn't play midfield and most other positions need leg speed. He would be competing with Mackenzie

I used the same GPT model as you did dude, I even gave you the prompt

It’s garbage

Pendlebury would play at Carlton off half back and his contribution would be much appreciated FWIW

Just definitely doesn’t play in every side, Hawks and Lions for a start

Hearing Lewis state blues only have 5-6 got me thinking about Freo and other teams.

For freo I’m pretty confident
Brayshaw
Serong
Young
Jackson
Treacy
Bolton
Amiss
Pearce
Clark
Ryan
(10)Would make any best 23
Would josh treacy walk into Carlton’s line up with curnow McKay and TDK resting forward?? Debatable

problem with this exercise is all of a sudden in everyone’s eyes the 18-23rd players on teams list are somehow irreplaceable. Teams might have 2 or 3 good players in that position but chances are the star is going to earn a spot somewhere.
Heeney
Chad
Gulden
Blakey
Jordon - because he's the best at what he does

It's crazy seeing people list half their side. Players like Papley, Rowbottom, and McCartin are guns, but i feel like there are some sides where they would at least be fighting for spots.

In what side is Papley “fighting” for a spot?

Libba, Zorko, Richards are others named as only probables that if they declared themselves free agents tomorrow would have 17 clubs fighting for their signature

I don't know if all those defenders make Hawthorns team, not that they aren't really good players its just right now we are stacked down there and it's more about the mix rather than individual talent right now.

For example can you play Barrass and Pearce along with the other tall options that run through it. It's very line ball who you go with out of these 2. Maybe you shuffle players around but would make us very tall and slower which goes against the game style we play.

I don't think Ryan fits in along side Sicily one or the other, his strengths don't really add anything to the mix that we don't already get from sis. But even if you tried who drops out, Scrimshaw? His kicking is very important to our counter attack Ryan doesn't replace that. Battle? Weddle? They all offer something different to the mix that Ryan doesn't.

Clark you would make room for but his spot is currently a mix of Amon/Impey/Scrimshaw. Would fit in the best of the 3 dockers mentioned.
Lol Luke Ryan walks into hawthorns b22…

Papley probably fights for a spot at Geelong. Not because he’s not a good player but just because it’s one part of the field where we are stacked with 1-2 goal a game players, 12-17 touch players.

Even our most maligned forward in Henry is almost a 2 goal a game player though he doesn’t get much of the ball.

Think most teams would find a spot for Zac Guthrie now too
This is where it can be difficult. He would get in most but would he get in all. As good as he has become not sure if he would get into Hawthorn's especially when you are already adding Stewart

Bailey Smith
Bailey Smith's played one good game in 3 years, my team has enough lazy unaccountable pricks in it thank you very much.

But what a game it was

He was the last one I selected ;)

Ken Hinkley is a walk up start at any club… except Port Adelaide.

Seriously though
Butters Rozee Horne-Francis definitely
Aliir maybe
Georgiades possibly
Bergman, Rioli unlikely

Agree with all besides Brayshaw
If he isn't tagging, he shouldn't even be in our best 22
Ball butcher, poor clearance player, whose highlights are mostly run down tackles
