Here is an interesting development that deserves discussion in this thread given Dan's involvement in making Peter Marshall one of the most potent union officials. The UFU is now lobbying to establish a "fire fighters regulatory board", not unlike the Victorian Institute of Teaching, to require operational fire fighters to be registered. Sounds like a good idea in principle.

However, the 'not-for-profit' company established to manage registrations is owned by UFU president, David Hamilton. Firefighters will be required to pay $180 annually, and this new company will have absolute veto powers on who can and can't be a registered fire fighter.

One can only hope this is challenged in the courts. After all, who is the employer, the UFU or FRV?

Will Dan say anything about this development? Unlikely

This is a solution without a problem - there are no private firefighters who need to be regulated. The government, who hire all the firefighters, already have quality control over firefighters.

Also, don't sleep on this being a stealth strategy to do away with volunteer firefighters: establish this quasi-regulatory agency, embed it in the paid system, then find a way (like through an EBA) to introduce "all firefighters need to be registered with the board" to basically make it impossible for volunteer firefighters to be engaged.

I am really in the dark as to why the UFU would want to marginalise volunteer fire fighters. They are the backbone of fire fighting in rural Victoria. Since the UFU shitfight started, the total number of volunteer fire fighters in Victoria has fallen, to the point that some farmers are buying their own ex CFA fire trucks to ensure fires on their properties can be fought. This, in itself is creating problems because the trucks need to be accredited by the government. Lucky we did not have any big outbreaks this summer.

I saw that statement from the government. Not sure whether I believe it. Regardless, it's now out in the open, and the government can and should say it will not happen, unless of course the agenda is to cede management of FRV in the UFU.

I don't think it should happen and saying they won't let it happen would be good but its unlikely that they will respond to a Murdoch hit piece like you want them to

CFA new Volunteers were at an all-time high pre-COVID, but COVID meant training stopped (I was enrolled and had begun training which then ceased).

So it's not "since the UFU fight started", because volunteers were up post-UFU, it was because of COVID that volunteers couldn't complete training and there's now a back-log.

But whatever suits your narrative.

As for the accreditation, it might help CFA Volunteers who want to take the step up towards FRV. Should be Govt funded, not privately run. Training for fire-fighting should always be publicly governed and run.
