Wont go away ?
He doesn’t hesitate to provide adverse commentary on those who disagree with him, even if implicitly through petulant dehumanising statements, but here he reckons he doesn’t provide commentary especially when it comes to himself. If Victoria had a viable alternative he would have been political toast by now..

Interesting take on VicPol:

While adequately resourcing IBAC will solve part of the problem IBAC also needs to have more teeth in being able to ensure accountability for police officers who clearly engage in misconduct.

That would be having both a viable labor alternative AND needing liberals to show themselves to be a threat to pressure alp into leadership change. It’s some way off, think most realistic time for change is election nov 2022.

Looks like the targets was the new bit.

His greatest strength is the Vic Lib’s weak state of representation. I can’t see him losing the upcoming election, but I think that be his last term in the role.

I still think he should resign before the election to give the party a full stop over covid. Disappointed its most unlikely now (as it's the one thing the libs can weaponize IF they do it smart, and I'm far from convinced he looks like a full term leader)

I suspect covid not being dead is a factor, but the state of the libs doesn't help either.

If there was any doubt that Melbourne’s CBD is rooted that was well and truly dispelled this week by Dan who publicly declared only 60% of workers will EVER return to the city. His words were “quite permanent”. Is it any surprise business owners have condemned Dan’s comments, with 1 in 5 CBD shops closed? Owners of Businesses that are just surviving will now be asking, “if the Premier has no confidence, then I’m out of here too”.

Melbourne restaurateur Chris Lucas is no fan of Dan (Lucas copped an $11,000 fine for breaching curfew on the first night of Lockdown 6), but what he says is spot on.

“(Dan’s) views only further add to the negativity that is damaging Melbourne’s brand and killing thousands of small businesses.

As a global city and the largest single economy in the state, it’s almost impossible to sustain a notion that a metropolis of our size can somehow operate at 50 per cent and compete with Sydney and Brisbane.”

so you want to outlaw hybrid working?

Who’s talking about outlawing anything? A bit of positivity from the Premier wouldn’t hurt. He has basically given up on the CBD, because a CBD with only 60% workers will result in further business closures.

Imagine if Damian Hardwick came out and said this week, “Richmond isn’t anywhere near as good as Melbourne, so I’m doubtful we’ll do much in 2022”

Dan doesn't control where people choose to work/shop/eat. To suggest otherwise is quite bizarre.

He does control his Public Service.

But why make a negative statement that will only add to the pain of the CBD? There are businesses in the CBD that are just surviving. Dan’s comments could be what makes the owners of those businesses say, “enough’s enough. I’m closing”.

He’d have been better off saying it will be tough but we’ll do what we can to reinvigorate the City

Positivity if it doesn’t work comes across as lies and deceit particularly if they have modelling/ surveys which confirm this 60% figure.

Maybe that's the best thing for some businesses, cut their losses now. Some of them will be flogging a dead horse moving forward, regardless of what Dan says.

I don’t think he can force public servants to not work from home if there has been no loss of efficiency (and let’s face it that’s often hard to measure)

I don’t know if the 60% came from modelling, but the comment by Dan suggests there is no hope for the CBD.

I think if the cbd businesses are banking on a quick return to normal that would be expensively incorrect.
I think there is no hope for a return to normal (pre pandemic)
There will be a new normal and a new equilibrium. Landlords might need to (gasp) drop commercial rates

Prior to March 2020 Melbourne’s CBD was one of the best. Lockdowns has killed it. You say maybe it’s for the best that marginal businesses close. So we end up with a ghost city with 2 in 5 shops boarded up. Is that what you want? Who would want to invest in this state when the CBD is dead?

CBD can then be reclaimed by the people, not big business landlords.
