Richmond ruckman-forward Brad Ottens will tell the Tigers today of his wish to leave Punt Road and continue his 129-game career elsewhere.

Ottens, 24, who is out of contract and the subject of frenzied bidding from rival clubs, has indicated he wishes to play with either Geelong or Sydney next year.

He will tell the Tigers of his desire to be traded today when he speaks with Richmond football director Greg Miller.

Ottens, who has been in Bali, will leave Melbourne for Thailand within 24 hours of telling Richmond of his wish to find another club.

Sources last night said that contrary to speculation, Ottens' motivation for seeking a new club was not so much the prospect of a reduced salary - cash-strapped Richmond has offered him a significant reduction to his present contract - but his desire to rejuvenate his football career

What a ripper, lets hoe we can pull it off :D

If it is true, which i doubt, what would geelong have and be willing to trade for ottens that would be of interest to richmond. They wouldnt want to give away much quality so you would have to get a three club trade, i doubt he will go to geelong

Ottens is the winner in this...

1. If he is traded he will get a salary of near $500k per year.

2. If he stays at Richmond he will get a reduced salary of $380k i think it was.

3. If he goes in the Preseason draft he will stay at Richmond on $500k a year.

I know what my choice would be.

The notion that the Tigers are in a strong bargain position is ludicrous, even from a preseason point of view. If Ottens and Ball were both available who would you pick?

You would have to take Luke Ball.

They will trade him, make no mistake. As for Sydney being a suitor that is willing to pay alot in trade terms, I thought a quality midfielder would have been more of a preference than an Ottens type seeing Goodes, Saddington, Hall, O'Loughlin etc provide a pretty good line up of key position players.

I think our bargain position is better than people think. Sure if the Tigers accept a trade from both clubs, Sydney could offer alot more money but Geelong has more of a chance at a flag and the article seemed to suggest success as a driving factor.

I believe we have more to give in a trade, they have more money to offer if needed. But at the same time were not going to pay over the hill to satisfy Richmond and Sydney won't pay Ottens more than $500k.

Ottens is just trying to pump up his wage.

Not worth the $500k a year he wants.

If Geelong recruited him, I'd make sure his wage had a big match day payment component.

Kane Tenace and late 1st round pick might get the deal over the line. Terry Wallace has an obsession with midfielders so would pull the trigger on this deal. For those Cats fans thinfing they're giving up to much, put Ottens in last Saturdays prelim team and you would have beaten the Lions with a good chance to win this week.

Not Tenace. will be a freak down the track. Moloney, Wojcjinski, Spriggs ( ) or Enright is not out of the question.

I for one hope my club doesn't offer too much...injury prone and over rated
IMO.....I'd have him playing ...but not for 500K - and definately not for a young kid or pick in return...I've heard Geelong are offering Spriggs for him?

As Ive inferred on another thread , I think there will be a tall component to the trade.Tigers have relied on Ottens,Stafford, Richo,Hall and not much else in the ruck. They would like to pick up young ruckman like Meesen or Woods but at 20 they may be gone. They are also thread bare in tall defenders and with ottens gone would be getting thin up forward as we know Richo hardley ever plays 22 games. I think they need talls just as much as they need midds.
Look at us and our young mids. They have come to heal much quicker than our talls and there are always heeps of mid's in the draft as well being cheeper in draft status, eg Dyson at Ess was in the 30's and played some good games this year yet a tall like Laycock has taken time to come to hand. If they draft sombody for a job on the backline it will take years before they are a solid unit
So, I would not be suprised that Chambers/Playfair/Lonergan was involved in a direct trade to Tigers as well as Spriggs is involved in a direct or non-direct the deal to other clubs for picks that are on traded

Anybody that thinks we will trade Bartel is nuts, they missed there chance.Offer us Ottens last year and Bartel would be bound for Punt Rd but he is now soild in the hoops and goind NOWHERE.

Wojo might be the type of player we could add to the mix that would add equity to the trade. It could hurt to lose him but he is also coverable with the likes of Tenace and Byrnes to come in.

Best Deal
Wojo,Chambers and Playfair for Ottens and there R2 pick

when does trade week start? dont know about giving up too many big blokes. Ottens would have to be 99% sound to let big H and Chambers go

Pick 16 a chance to get them Messen?
I dont think theyll be touching anything without a first round pick attached to it.

Why is it these club sites offer up one sided trades. To get Ottens will mean offering something of value to Richmond. Not duds like Spriggs, Big men win the big games so come on cat fans how about some 'realistic' trade proposals.

What your est. for the Modie boy .
P16 is close to it would think +/- 2 players.By 16 we would be able to get one of Messen, Woods or the boy whos brother plays at the Blues but if we get Ottens that wouldnt be required this year. However the Tigers would jump at one of them if they lose Ottens.
But you may be right, if the ruckmen are in demand we may have to trade to upgrade our #1.If we trade our R1 and Spriggs for Melb R1 and R3 picks ,it gives us a couple earlier which might be the clincher.

What just do you expect, Steven King? What about all Australain FB Matty Scarlett. Why not both and our first draft pick as well.
Really what names would you expect. Yes he is valubale, he was a #2 pick and he is the right fit for us but for you its all icing and no cake, all sauce and no streak. You have decied by reducing his contract that he is tradeable not essential. If your side was in or looked like being near the eight I doubt he would be going anywhere.

Just an extract from Greg Miller's open letter to Richmond members and supporters:

"He has the ability to become one of the game’s absolute top-liners – and that’s the price someone’s going to have to pay for his services.

Early draft choices are what we’d be looking at for an exchange. In a year where we’ve already got selections 1, 4 and 20, we’re keen to further bolster our stocks of young talent with more early picks.

Let’s also understand that if a suitable offer is not forthcoming to trade Brad, then we will reserve our right to re-sign him, or take him in the pre-season draft.

Obviously, if Brad is to be traded, then we must bring in a readymade big player, as well as draft choices, to fill the void. I can assure Richmond supporters that contingency plans are in place."

Seems like Richmond will indeed be after another readymade bigman and early picks in exchange for Ottens. I'm very doubtful our young big men will satisfy Richmond in any deal, so it seems if Ottens were to come down to Geelong, we'd have to arrange some sort of 3 way trade with another club (Perhaps Freo and Simmonds or Essendon and Bolton?).
